Comments By CathyTHANKSGIVING: FOOD,

FAMILY, FOOTBALLBy Cathy Shattles Lipsett

Editor/Publisher Thanksgiving is one of those memory

holidays. Whether good ones or bad ones, it’s one of those days you remember and reflect upon. When I was growing up, for example, my mother didn’t really care for turkey. Thanksgiving had the dressing and mashed potatoes and other good things, but no turkey. We always had a baked hen. Hen’s can be tricky birds and one year that old hen just wouldn’t get done. Hence, one tough old hen created a Thanksgiving memory.

In addition to giving thanks for our blessings, food, family, and football seem to be the theme of this special American holiday. I’m not a football fan, but I do like preparing the meal and having my family and friends around me. Addition-ally, for many in our community, feeding the hungry is also a part of their Thanksgiv-ing tradition.

This year, more than ever, many people have a new personal theme to this day; that of hunger. The groups in our com-munity who help those in need are seeing an increase in the number of folks coming to them for help. Many have never asked for help before, but loss of jobs, homes and income have brought them to the door-step of the non-profit organizations. There is a new dilemma this year, however. The needs have increased but the num-bers of people who are able to give have decreased.

In too many homes throughout our county Thanksgiving will be just another day of too little food and too much hunger. With the donations of generous folks throughout Cobb, however, there will be food baskets filling empty pantries. In mentioning some of the groups offering help, I’m sure I will offend others who are not mentioned; just know that it is not intentional if a group is omitted. There is an abundance of generous people in our county and so many groups willing to lend their expertise and time to coordinating the donation efforts.

One well known group that has been filling Thanksgiving baskets here for 25 years is the Center for Family Resources (formerly known as Cobb Family Resources.) If you would like to make a contribution to them or find out how to receive help, call them at 770-428-2601 or www.TheCFR.org.

Another group of individuals who are often forgotten are those with mental health disabilities. The Cobb Community Services Board is furnishing baskets for several hun-

dred individuals and families for Thanks-giving. To make a contribution for yourself or a group, call Mary Robeck at 770-819-9229, ext. 226. She will even come and collect your canned goods or grocery store gift cards for meats. She is also looking for folks to provide special activities and/or Christmas gifts for individuals or families or groups served by Cobb/Douglas Com-munity Services Board.

C.A.M.P. in Austell is seeking dona-tions rather than actual food. A contribu-tion of $10 will go a long ways toward feeding a family at the holiday or through-out the year. Their clothes closet provides approximately 12,000 gently-used clothing and household items, as well as essential items such as diapers, feminine hygiene products and school supplies. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 802, Austell 30168 or online at www.svcamp.org. They are located at 6289 Veterans Memorial Highway Building 12, Austell or call them at 770-819-0662.

Last year our son and his wife, Peter and Ann-Bailey, came from Virginia to Marietta on Wednesday so they can run in the Thanksgiving Day Gobble Jog. This is a fund-raising event for MUST Ministries. They are well-known in our community for the help they provide, including food at Thanksgiving and throughout the year. For information about MUST Ministries in Smyrna call them at 770-436-9514 or check their web site at MUSTMinistries.org or for the Gobble Jog: www.gobblejog.org , or call the Gobble Jog hotline: 678-218-4521.

On Nov. 24 we will gather together, thankful to God for our family, our home, food to eat and fellowship with those we love. For us and for many families through-out our county and country, it has been a year of belt-tightening and budgeting, but on Thanksgiving Day we will be grateful for all of our many blessings.

Austell will hold its annual Christmas Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 at the gazebo in Collar Park.

The event is sponsored annually by Mayor Joe Jerkins and the Austell City Council to welcome the holiday season.

In addition to the tree lighting, all of the holiday lights in the city will be turned on.

Santa will arrive during the evening to visit with the children. Choral groups from area schools will sing and refreshments will be available.

HOLIDAY GIVING PROGRAMS SERVE CHILDRENChristian Aid Mission Partnership’s

(C.A.M.P.) annual holiday food program is well underway as they prepare to feed 1,200 families this year. With each $10 donation to the “Thanks Giving” Program, a family in need will receive a holiday feast, turkey and all. This program is made possible through C.A.M.P.’s partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank. As one of Cobb County’s non-profits, C.A.M.P. cel-ebrates the opportunity to bring hope and joy to those they serve through this very special program. To learn more about the “Thanks Giving” program, please contact Jay Cantrell, Food Pantry Manager, at 770-819-0662, x12. To make a donation, please mail to: C.A.M.P., P.O. Box 802, Austell, GA 30168.

C.A.M.P.’s Annual Christmas Toy Program prepares to serve nearly 1,000 children this year. While many parents are struggling to make ends meet during these difficult economic times, C.A.M.P. will work to make a difference in their lives during the Christmas season. The agency relies on the generosity of its many faithful

supporters to offer this program each year. So, once again they are asking for support from the community. You can help by sponsoring an “Angel Tree” at your busi-ness, church or civic group, volunteering your time in C.A.M.P.’s Christmas Room, or making an individual monetary dona-tion or toy donation. Brand new toys are needed for boys and girls ages birth to 11 years old. C.A.M.P. requests that toys are unwrapped and delivered to C.A.M.P. by Dec. 8. For more information about this giving program please contact Belinda Thomas, Special Projects Coordinator, at 770-819-0662, ext. 27.

For those unfamiliar with C.A.M.P.’s services, the agency operates a large food pantry, clothing closet, financial assistance program, and several special programs for children. Last year, C.A.M.P. served over 12,000 people and distributed over 1 Mil-lion pounds of food to the community. Please visit C.A.M.P.’s website at www.svcamp.org to learn more about their pro-grams, services, and volunteer and giving opportunities.

NOTES &NOTICES

GIRL SCOUTS GIVE AWAY BOOKS

Girl Scout Troop 2842 from Mable-ton organized a book give away at the Food Depot Oct. 16 to promote literacy in the community. Instead of having a cookie booth, they set up a “book booth” and gave over 250 free children’s books along with bookmarks to residents. The girls realized their rooms at home were overflowing with books that they have outgrown or have completed reading and decided to give them away. It was amazing to see the volume of books that each girl contributed. Madisen, Simone, Jasmyn, Lindsey, Camille and Lynese collected the books, made signs and op-erated the table in front of the neighbor-hood grocery store. The goal was to give books to families to promote reading, recycle books by passing them on to new readers and to increase the visibility of Girl Scouts working in their community. Mrs. Gispert is the leader of this troop.
