Sound Waves Foundation
The Sound Waves Foundation program consists of two phases: Exploring Sounds and Discovering Graphemes. These phases are designed to be taught across a whole school year, with Exploring Sounds implemented in Term 1 and Discovering Graphemes in Terms 2–4.
Phase 1: Exploring SoundsThis is an oral, aural and kinaesthetic phase where students learn to hear and shape the 43 sounds (or phonemes) of Australian English. This stage develops phonological awareness and in particular phonemic awareness skills, which are essential for students to begin successfully reading and writing in the next phase of the program.In the Exploring Sounds phase, students:• learn the 43 sounds of Australian English• learn the icons that represent the sounds• learn to segment words into sounds and blend sounds
to form words• complete phonemic awareness activities for every
sound (via the Sound Waves Foundation Student Book).
Phase 2: Discovering GraphemesThis phase introduces the most common graphemes used to represent each sound in writing, while revising and extending phonemic awareness skills.In the Discovering Graphemes phase, students:• consolidate their knowledge of the 43 sounds and icons• learn the most common graphemes that represent
each sound• are introduced to List Words and Special Words (see p. 3)• segment and blend VC, CV and CVC words• complete activities for every sound-letter
correspondence (via the Sound Waves Foundation Student Book).
• practise handwriting• create and punctuate sentences• complete a variety of additional activities including
Decodable Readers, spelling and reading games, and art activities.

As students progress through the Discovering Graphemes phase, they are introduced to List Words and Special Words. List Words are words that students will be able to read and spell, based on the sound-letter relationships they have been taught. Special Words are high-frequency words with unusual spellings (e.g. the) or words containing sound-letter correspondences not yet taught in the phase.
