    Fall 2007 Issue 10

    The SCORE Turns 25!

Cutting you in on the latest from Spectrum Glass CompanyCutting you in on

Its hard to believe, but this issue marks the 100th

printing of our newsletter, The SCORE. The SCOREhas been continually published, without interruption,

every three months for the past twenty-five years. Whew

a quarter of a century! Its been an integral part of

    Spectrums marketing endeavors

    and has developed quite a

    following along the way.

    The SCORE was originally

conceived back in 1982 as a

    communication between our

factory and the art glass retailers.

These early issues werent muchmore than typed letters. (Yes, we

mean typed.) The spring of 1984

    saw some graphic and content

    improvements, including a logo/

masthead and by June of that

year, the beloved Patterns of the

    Month made their

    first appearance.

    Jim Matthews

    officially assumed

    the role of editor

at this point andThe SCORE began devel-

    oping its characteristic

    tone and personality.

    As Retailers

    increasingly began to share

    the patterns and other content

    with their customers, The SCORE

steadily grew in popularity and in

    2003, officially became a consumer

    publication distributed through our Stained

    Glass Retailers.

We interviewed Jim to get some of the highlights

from the years he diligently wrote and produced

    the publication single-handedly.

Jim noted, Until about 5 years ago,

we depended on our readers for

    pattern donations and often used

    humor to disguise our begging.

Sometimes it got us in trouble

like the time we featured a plant

    employee behind bars for reproducing

a Pattern of the Month more than threetimes without submitting a new

pattern to the program. It was

    meant to

    be a funny

    way to pick

    up some

    patterns, but

    we received so

    many panicked

    phone calls, we

    had to print a

    retraction in ournext issue. Oops.

    Now, at the ripe

    old age of 25,

    we think it

    seems like time

    to shake things

up a bit but not too much.

head, changing the formattingBegging for patterns in the old d

    Coloring with Clear Textures

Astained glass pattern is very much like a childs

coloring book; both contain lines that define shapes

and spaces to be colored. But instead of turning to

a box of crayons or felt-tip markers, a glass artist chooses

from a carefully selected palette of beautiful stained glass to

make a design spring to life.

Spectrum is in the business of color. We offer a wide range

of gorgeous glass that can be used to create just about any-

    thing under the sun and

    beyond. But its important

    to remember that color isnt

all we have to offer. Have

    you ever thought about us-

ing just clear textures in a

    piece? It can be stunningly

    effective. Take a look at

    the two pieces shown here,

    both by Little/Raidl Design

Studios in Cazadero, CA.The different textures define

    spaces and even create a

    sense of realism when

    appropriate grain or

    textures are used to convey

    tree bark, water, or feathers.

    The designs appear colored

    but in an understated and

    elegant way.

    Not every project is meant

to go colorless, but many are

improved by the method. When working with clear

    textures and the absence

    of color keep in mind

    that its the texture that

    becomes the predominant

    element in your palette. Pay

    attention to the grain,

    pattern or translucency

    of the glass to con-

    vey as much detail

    and information

    as possible about

    your subject.

    The clean lines

    in this issues

    Apple Bouquet

    pattern (page 7)

    made it a perfect

    choice to show what

    coloring with clear

textures can do for even a

simple design. Give it a try and see

what you think about the subtleties of colorless glass work.

    Project Guide

Spectrum Glasspresents: The System 96 Glass Craft Program

    Materials We Used

    Glass Colors: Your choice

    Pebbles:Sky Blue, White

    Fiber Paper

    Wire: 18-gauge copper

    Note:

*Portable Assembly Surface= an unglazed ceramic tile usedto support a project that has noBlank.

    Step-by-Step

    1. Build your frame on a Portable Assembly Surface* or

kiln shelf covered with Thinfire paper.

    2.

Cut a vase shape (approximately 9-inches long).

    3. Trace the shape of the top inch or so of the vases neck onto

a small piece of Clear glass. Cut out shape and place under-

neath the vase aligning with its neck.

    4. Hanging Loop: Cut a -inch piece of 18-gauge copper wire

and twist it into a loop as shown in the diagram. Place be-

tween the vase and the clear piece from Step 3. (Make sure

loop hangs over edge of glass!)

    5. Decorate the vase as desired.

    6. Flower: Cut a rough octagonal shape approximately 2

inches in diameter from Clear glass. Using pinpoints of glue,

build a Pebble flower on this base as shown in diagram.

    7. Flower Channel: Cut a 1/8x 4 strip of fiber paper. Center strip

lengthwise on a 2 x strip of Clear as shown in diagram. Dot

fiber strip with glue and carefully position the flower on top.

IMPORTANT: Be sure the fiber strip extends byond the glass

on both sides. This creates a channel through the flower that

    will be used for hanging.

    8. Contour fuse.

    9. Finish: Cut an 8-inch length of 18-gauge copper wire. Curlwire whimsically, add beads if desired. Attach one end of

this wire to the embedded loop, twisting it securely. This

forms the center wire. Cut a 20-inch wire and thread it

halfway though the embedded loop and twist in place to

create the two outer wires. Curl these and add glass beads,

as desired. Make a small loop at the top of the center wire.

Thread an 18-inch length of fishing line through the channel

in the flower and tie it securely to the center wire loop. Make

a small loop on the other end of the fishing line to hang.
