Marketing and Engineering Office

Scorpio Engineering Private Limited established in 1983, is a technology based

engineering and manufacturing company in the area of Dry Bulk Solids Handling Systems. With dense

and dilute phase pneumatic conveying as its core expertise developed over 20 years of experience,

Scorpio is now a single source turnkey supplier of technology and systems to all bulk handling

industries worldwide.

For the cement and fly ash industries, Scorpio has developed technology, expertise and experience in

the following areas:

Ship Loaders and UnloadersA unique feature of Scorpio Ship

Unloaders is a low cost modular

manufacturing philosophy. The

Unloader can be offered in a modular

arrangement with the following

options:

l Pneumatic Suction and Screw Out-

load at jetty

l Pneumatic Suction and Pneumatic

Discharge to far storage

l Screw Evacuation and Pneumatic

Discharge to far storage

l Screw Evacuation and Screw Out-

load to jetty and pipe conveyor to

far storage

With this unique combination, the

Unloader offers complete flexibility at

the dockside enabling filling of Bulk

Tankers, filling of far silos and packing

of cement with the same main

machine. All parts and components

are engineered for heavy-duty

operation considering the demanding

requirement of continuous ship

unloading for quick ship turnarounds.

Where the far silos are at distances

more than 500 metres from the jetty,

pneumatic discharge will use more

power than conventional belt conveying. Scorpio offers a pipe conveyor to transport

the cement from jetty to far silos beyond 500 metres. The pipe conveyor is highly cost

effective since it is fully covered during the conveying of the cement to the silos and

costs less than conventional belt conveyors.

Scorpio Ship Loaders use enclosed belt conveying technology and telescopic loading

spouts to enable dust free filling of bulk cement into the holds of the export ship.

Bagged cement can also be loaded with these loaders with modular chute

attachments to the unit.

Self unloading ships and floating terminalsWhere the use of dock based unloaders is not possible and where cement

needs to be distributed over a number of coastal destinations, Scorpio

offers self-unloading ships and barges. The ships are retrofitted with

fluidized floors. Cement is sucked out from the holds to deck mounted

receiving silos from where it is discharged or pumped out to the dockside

for loading into Bulk Tankers or to far silos.

The self-unloaders can also double as floating terminals whereby the

cement from the holds is fed into a packing plant within the ship (one of

the holds is converted to a packing plant). These floating terminals discharge bagged cement as against bulk cement in the self-unloaders. The

bagged cement can be discharged from the side of the ship to dockside pallets or directly loaded into trucks parked on the jetty. These dumb

barges are gearless vessels with shallow draft and can be berthed in low draft areas.

Road, Sea and Waterway Distribution

With the major cost content

of cement being in its

distribution, optimum

methods of cement

distribution are required to

ensure that cement

manufacturers remain

profitable. Scorpio can offer a

combination of road, sea and

river movement of cement using bulk tankers, self-unloading ships and river barges. River loading and unloading terminals are designed,

engineered and fitted to suit each location. Especially in India with its long coastline and also with the national waterways now being developed by

the Government, there are major opportunities for low cost cement distribution using an optimum combination of road, waterway and coastal

cement transport routes.

Storage

Cement storage can be in silos, domes or flat storage depending upon the application. Scorpio can

offer steel and concrete silos, dome storage as well as flat storage. Storage capacities can be from 10000

to 100000 tonnes. Scorpio's Flat Storage

system at Galle Port in Sri Lanka handles

15000 tonnes of two varieties of cement.

Complete Cement Terminals

The technology and expertise developed by Scorpio can be integrated into a

complete cement terminal covering unloading of bulk cement ships, conveying to

cement silos or other storage and then packing into bags or trucks for distribution.

Scorpio can offer the complete design, engineering, manufacture, installation and

commissioning of small to medium sized cement terminals on a turnkey basis with a

single source responsibility. Such projects also cover feasibility studies, terminal

layouts, ship size recommendations, storage specifications and methods, packing

plants, etc. Scorpio has already supplied a number of such medium sized terminals on

turnkey basis.

High Capacity Screw Conveyors

As part of terminal engineering, high capacity Screw Conveyors are required to feed cement from silos

to packing plant, hoppers, etc. Scorpio has built heavy duty Screw Conveyors of 500 TPH capacity with

12m lengths without hanger bearings. Such technology and design expertise comprise key strengths

of Scorpio which is a technology supplier and not just a hardware or equipment vendor.

Open Truck Unloaders

Scorpio has developed the Open Truck Unloader specifically for

the fly ash handling industry where the low cost of fly ash

prevents its handling and transport using conventional cement

transport methods. The Bulk Tankers used for cement transport

prove extremely expensive for handling fly ash. Based on the

request of a number of cement companies which are now

mixing fly ash into cement at up to 30%, the Open Truck

Unloader offers a low cost solution to fly ash handling. The fly

ash is filled in a specially designed flexible 'superbag' with fits

into a regular road transport truck. This bag is capable of

holding 10 to 15 tonnes of fly ash. On arrival at the cement

plant from the power stations, the bag is opened at the top and

the Open Truck Unloader sucks out the fly ash and discharges it

directly to the fly ash silo in the cement plant.

Transhipment at port anchorage

Ship Unloaders can be mounted on pontoons for transhipping cement and fly ash from river

barges to Panamax vessels and vice-versa. Scorpio offers complete design through

installation and commissioning of such pontoon based systems for transhipment at

anchorage. This enables cement companies to despatch/receive large cement ships of

Panamax sizes to/from the markets. Berthing charges are minimised by transhipping

products from these large ships to smaller barges which can then sail to coastal and inland

market locations.
