Automax Heavy DutyScotch Yoke Pneumatic Actuators

Automax has a complete range of scotch yoke, heavy dutyrotary actuators, with a unique bearing design to provide higherefficiencies and longer life.

• Double acting or spring return.

• Suitable for on/off or control applications.

• Pressure ranges from 2.7 to 7 bar pneumatic.

• Torque Outputs: Standard design from 740 to 19000 Nm at 5.5 bar.

• Failsafe clockwise or counter-clockwise (field reversible).

• Gear, jackscrew, hydraulic snubber and hydraulic operated override options.

• Positioner, switchbox, filter/regulator, solenoid(s), etc. can be fitted as options.

R2, RM3 & RM4 SeriesPiston Seals The pneumatic series actuators utilise 'O' ring sealsfor RM3/4 series and quad seals for R2 series. These seals haveproven their dependability over years of trouble-free service.

Piston Rods and Rod Bearings Large diameter piston rods are guided and supported by extra long bronze bearings. The rods are ground, high strength steel with a hard chrome plating polished to a mirror finish of 4 to 8 microns.

Scotch Yoke The slot in the scotch yoke mechanism is precisionmachined. The yoke pin is induction hardened and chrome platedand the yoke pin rollers are hardened steel.

Output Shaft Top accessory shaft has NAMUR slot, and optionalposition indicator. Male output drive.

Cylinder The cylinders are honed to a micro finish with a hardchrome plating.

Needle Bearings and Seals Automax is the only actuator with precision drawn cup needle bearings at the torque shaft journals. The bearings significantly increase torque output and cycle life, while providing near frictionless rotary movement.The seals protect the needle bearings from external dirt andcorrosion, while the bearings’ rigid design prolongs seal life.

Housing with Identical Mounting Pads This unique one piecehousing assures accurate alignment of both torque shaft andpiston rod. Valve and accessory mounting pads are located on topand bottom of the body, providing easy change of fail direction andoptional mounting of gear override.

Spring Module The spring module is an easily removable, welded cartridge.

Piston Seal and Wearband The R5 series actuator utilises quadseals in conjunction with a piston wearband. The quad sealsprovide a low friction, long lasting seal, proven dependable foryears of trouble free service. The wearband provides additionalalignment and support for the piston seal.

Engineering DataSpeed of OperationMany factors determine the speed of operation. The actuator speedmay be increased or reduced using control equipment and/ormodification of the actuator. For further details please consultTechnical Sales.

Air Fail Safe SystemsIn certain applications these systems are economic alternatives tospring return actuators. Each receiver is sized for the conditionsencountered. e.g. size of actuator and number of operating cyclesrequired.

CoatingsStandard coating for the actuator is epoxy primer with acrylic top coat.Specialist coatings are available on request.

All actuators are factory lubricated, but must still be protected from the elements and stored indoors with the ports plugged toprevent contamination from foreign matter. If stored and the actuatorhas not been stroked for a period of time the seals may take a 'set'.Cycling the actuator several times will re-energise the seals.

RM3/RM4 actuators are supplied with lifting lugs to assist withhandling. These are positioned on top of the spring cartridge andadaptor plate.

NB. This is not to be used to lift complete valve/actuator assembly.Intended for lifting of the actuator only.

Actuator service life is extended by using clean, dry air. Lubricated airmay be used for high cycle applications However, it is not normallyrecommended as this may reduce the life of the positioner (if fitted).

For maintenance, a kit is available. Parts indicated with asterisks (*) inthe parts listing form part of the seal repair kit. Complete maintenanceinstructions will be provided.

CAUTION: Never attempt to disassemble the spring cartridge module.If there is a faulty spring, the spring cartridge module must bereplaced as a complete unit.

Storage, Installation and Maintenance

Stroke Adjustment102º (6 degrees at either end).

For correct porting or positioningof the open and close positions ofthe valve or driven component,finite adjustment is achievedusing the actuator’s stop bolts.

TemperatureStandard: -30º to +80ºC

Beyond this range special seals and lubricants are normally required.

High Temperature: -20º to +150ºCLow Temperature: -50º to +85ºC

PressureEach actuator is designed with ample safety factors. However, theyshould not be pressurised beyond the maximum values given for eachmodel in the torque tables.
