As we work into the 20th year since the launch of the Vater brand drumstick line, it gives me reason to reminisce about the early days of making drumsticks for my family business along side with my Dad, my brother Ron and our production manager Billy Clark.
I think back to the times we worked endless hours to innovate and develop the perfect manufacturing process, the decision to launch our own brand of drumsticks after years of manufacturing for other companies, moving our factory location, and all of the trials and tribulations that came along the way.
Today, we continue to improve the manufacturing process, while we maintain the great level of quality, care and detail as my grandfather Jack Adams did when he hand-turned drumsticks back in the 1950’s.
However, what has changed is the fact that there are now so many different facets to our daily business activities. Our family has grown from just a few employees to dozens, including several who have been with us for
over 25 years. Our production has gone from manufacturing 150 pairs a day to now over 13,000 pairs. We’ve gone from servicing local drum shop customers to being distributed in over 70 countries. Throughout this intense growth, one thing has remained the same…it’s always been about making the very best sticks.
We have always strived to meet the demands of the drumming community, and many of Vater’s products have been a result of consumer input and demand. That being said, our efforts now exceed just making drumsticks as we offer dozens of accessory products along with our 250 plus stick, mallet, brush and specialty stick models to help every drummer create music in all varieties of percussion.
As I think about the incredibly talented artists around the world that have become a part of the Vater Family and work closely with Vater’s Artist Relations Director Chad Brandolini, it gives me great pleasure see so many of
the world’s top drummers believe in Vater’s quality. I feel so very fortunate to call many of our Artists my close friends and want to thank each and every one of them for their continued love and support through the years.
I have always enjoyed talking to drummers and listening to their stories, comments and ideas of all things percussive. It’s very rewarding to witness the extreme sense of camaraderie we all share together as drummers. This relationship is special and unique and truly is a great part of being involved and having friendships with so many great people in the drumming community.

Each Vater stick starts from a raw dowel Vater accepts only the highest quality Hickory and Maple dowels with a particular moisture content reading from wood suppliers.
Vater’s sticks are cut on back-knife lathes, set up and overseen by Ron Vater. Each stick model is turned from it’s own steel knife designed to the specifications and measurements of that model.

Each stick is then put through a delicate sanding process. With machines custom designed by Vater, each stick is evenly sanded with impeccable consistency.
The wood tips are shaped using an extremely accurate automated process. Each stick is inserted into a cylinder in which a size/shape specific knife shapes the tip. The stick is then released leaving a perfectly shaped tip every time.

Nylon tips are applied using a custom designed automated machine built exclusively for Vater. Each stick spins while glue is applied evenly around the wood to nylon tip contact surface area. The tip is then forced on the stick with a great amount of air compression, leaving it permanently “locked” on the stick.
Sticks are then put in a revolving tumbler that evenly applies the sealer and finish coats. This process leaves every stick with that famous Vater finish.

The sticks from each individual bin are then color matched in bar-coded sleeves, leaving a perfectly pitch and weight matched pair.
“Bricks” of 12 pair are then shrink wrapped in plastic. This dramatically decreases the potential loss of moisture content in the sticks, keeping them straight. The sticks are now ready to be put in stock and ship.

Now worthy of the Vater name, the sticks are then labeled on a pad-printing machine. Silicone pads apply pressure to a self-inking metal plate, etched with the Vater logo and model name, leaving the image on the pads. The pads then come down and apply the image to the stick.
Each stick is then put through Vater’s computer pitch and weight matching system. The pitch and weight of each stick is recorded and the stick is placed into a designated bin. Each stick within a specific bin will have the same pitch and weight as the others in the same bin.

Each stick is then rolled down a set of steel pipes by a quality control expert. Sticks that are warped or have a mineral streak/visual blemish are then taken out and become 2nd quality sticks. The sticks that make it through are considered 1st quality... for now.
Alan Vater then personally re-rolls each and every stick that made it through the first rolling process on a pure black surface. Alan removes every stick that he comes across that isn’t 100% straight.

UNMATCHED QUALITY GUARANTEE
There are four main components that make up a drumstick. They areresponsible for the overall feel, balance and response of the drumstick.
- Vater has several Hickory wood suppliers that are exclusive to Vater. They produce dowels based on very specific terms to produce the finest quality Hickory for drumsticks.
- Hickory only grows in the United States and is the best wood in the world to produce striking tools. (Hammers, Ax Handles, and yes..drumsticks). Hickory absorbs a great amount of shock.
- The best process to producing very white Hickory is to use low temperatures when Kiln drying so not to "pink" the wood. The Kilns start drying at 85 degrees and are slowly increased but never exceed 105 degrees.
- The Kiln drying cycle time that produces the best results is 2 1/2 weeks.
- Vater's Hickory is stress released which is done by slowly raising the temperature at the end of the drying cycle for 8 hours. This relieves the stress in the wood and produces straight sticks that stay straight.
- Vater uses the 2 best Hickory species for it's drumsticks which are Shell Bark and Shag Bark Hickory
- Vater uses a dowel moisture content specific to "striking" tools (10%-12%). Some of Vater's major competitors use a moisture content known for furniture manufacturing (6%-8%). Wood is cellulose fiber and water......The more water moisture you extract, the weaker the wood. The more water moisture present (as in Vater sticks), the stronger the wood.
- Vater produces 85% of it drumsticks from Hickory and 15% from Sugar Maple.
- Only the outer 3"-5" of the Hickory tree is used to make drumsticks. This is the live part of the tree which is call the Sap Wood.
- It takes 16-22 years for a Hickory tree to grow before it is harvested for drumstick production.
- Each time a Hickory tree is cut, another one is planted. New trees are also produced from the Hickory Nuts that naturally fall from the trees.
- USA grown Sugar Maple along with Hickory is one of the strongest hardwoods in the world .
- Sugar Maple is now used by many Baseball stars for their bats instead of Ash because of it's strength.
ACORNProduce a full, fat sound. Very responsive.
BARRELTips produce a full punchy sound. Great for louder volume situations.
OVALTips produce a broad, mid range sound due to tip length.
TEARDROPProduce rich, dark tones with focused lows.
BALLTips produce a clean, bright and articulate sound.
TAPERTaper of the shoulder affects the feel and performance of a stick. A long taper provides more flex and a greater response, while a short taper is stiffer and offers additional strength.
LENGTHAffects the balance and fulcrum point of all drumsticks. Longer sticks offer greater reach and leverage, while shorter sticks are easier to control and tend to feel “quicker”.
THICKNESSAffects the durability and overall weight of the stick, as well as the “feel” of the stick in the hand. Thicker sticks are more durable and heavy, while thinner models offer a lighter, more sensitive feel.
SHOULDERShoulder profile affects the weight distribution of the stick, and has an effect on the sense of rebound.
MAPLEA much lighter and less dense wood than hickory. Maple can provide the feel of a big stick without the extra weight of a hickory stick. Maple sticks are primarily used for light, fast playing in low volume situations.
HICKORYThe most popular wood used for making drumsticks. Hickory is denser, heavier and more rigid than Maple. Hickory can also absorb a great amount of shock, which reduces hand and wrist fatigue. “Dark”, or “brown” hickory, is found closer to the tree’s center and is slightly denser and heavier than “white” hickory.
NYLONTips produce a brighter sound than wood tip models. More durable than wood tips.

MANUFACTURINGWhile you’re in search of a drumstick that will best suit your playing style. Straightness, density, tip shape, taper, length, wood type, diameter and balance are all key factors in how a drumstick is going to “feel” in your hands. Drummers may use a variety of models to express a particular sound or mood in their playing that they can’t get from using just one stick model.
STICK SELECTIONTip shapes are the main factor that affects the overallsound the stick will make on drums and cymbals.
Wood type is the key element to a drumstick’s response and durability. Vater crafts their drumsticks from only the finest American Hickory and Sugar Maple available.
Vater Percussion and the environmentVater has chosen a waste disposal contractor that is
committed to recycling. Recyclable goods are separated and sent for recycling at their sorting facility.
All wood shavings left behind from manufacturing are used by animal farms local to the Vater factory. Once used at the farms,
they are then re-used for compost.

American Hickory dowels have to meet very strict quality characteristics to be made into a Vater drumstick. Vater only uses dowels that have a specifi c moisture content, straightness and grain structure to in-turn, produce a higher quality drumstick.

Named after the legendary street in Manhattan and replicated after one of the early hand-turned Jack’s Drum Shop Models this design is straight out of the great Jazz and Big Band era. The long and flat oval tip produces warm and broad ride cymbal tones with full-bodied drum sounds. The quick taper gives it a great feel and response.
