Become immersed in somefascinating science as youinvestigate gases, forces and magnets.Build your own hot air balloon, designand launch your own rocket, test yourstrength, speed and agility and takethe K’NEX challenge.

Visit From Grain to Glass, theexhibition of the Scotch WhiskyAssociation. This exhibition, which ispart of the Scotch Whisky AssociationCentenary, brings together the tools of the trade, the artwork, and maps of Scotland’s distilleries to show howScotch Whisky became a nationalicon. You’ll also have the chance tosee a cooper at work and findout/learn how whisky barrels aremade.

Take a tour of the building,see the Debating Chamber andfind out how the Scottish Parliamentworks.

RocketsDesign and launch a rocket to hita target. Investigate Newton’s 3rdlaw – ‘every action has an equaland opposite reaction’. (For everyforce in one direction there is anequal force in the opposite direction.)

Cool scienceEven though you can’t see it theair around us is filled with lots ofdifferent gases. Come and exploresome of the properties of carbondioxide and nitrogen in thisuniquely chilling opportunity.

Hot air balloonsWork together in this family group activity.Make and launch your very own hot air balloonas you learn all about the properties of gas.

ForcesSee Isaac Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion madeeasy. If you love discovery, laughing and“having a go” then you’ll enjoy this interactivephysics experience.

Plane crazyWhose plane can fly the furthest? This activity isfor people of all ages. There are many differentplanes to choose from. How far will yours go?

Magnificent magnetsAimed at younger children, this activity will developan understanding of magnets and how they work.Make your own magnet and take it home.

What’s on

Guided tours - FREETours are free of charge and usually include a visit to the Debating Chamber. They include informationabout the work, history and procedures of the Scottish Parliament and also about the design and architecture of the building. Booking required.

From Grain to Glass - FREEExplore the history of the Scotch Whisky industry andfind out the true heritage of Scotland’s national drink in a new exhibition at the Scottish Parliament. This exciting exhibition will show Scotch Whisky’s strongcultural heritage, its position as an iconic Scottish product and demonstrate how vital it is to the country’seconomy and society. The exhibition will also chartlandmark events in the last 100 years.

Cooperage demonstrations - FREESaturday 1 December, Demonstrations will take place at 11:30 and 14:00John Carberry is a Cooper with 23 years’ experiencein the industry. John will be giving a public demonstration to show how casks are made and repaired showing how a traditional craft is still as relevant today as it was over 100 years ago. You willbe guided through the complexity of cask building andre-building as barrels are constructed to ensure thatthey are robust enough to be filled.

St Andrew’s Day Debate - FREEMonday 3 December, 16:30-18:00,Debating ChamberWorking together, the Scottish Parliament, the ScottishGovernment and the English Speaking Union have organised the annual St Andrew’s Day Debating Championship. University and secondary school pupilsfrom across Scotland will join together and form teamsthat will debate their way through several heats beforetaking their place in the championship final in the Debating Chamber. Booking required.
