BanquetThe Annual Scholarship Awards Banquetwas held on April 29th in the Crystal DiningRoom of the Dallas Scottish Rite with alarge group of excited Senior’s of 2005.They were accompanied by their parents,friends and favorite teachers.

The Speaker for the evening was Lonnie A.“Bo” Pilgrim, 33o, accompanied by his Lady,Patty. The recipients enjoyed his speechvery much. This was made clear by thenumber that wanted to talk with him andasked for his autograph.

After his speech, Scholarships werepresented to 25 Seniors from all parts ofthe territory covered by the Valley of

Dallas. Each recipient was given anopportunity to present an essay of whythey were proud to be an American. Twowere accepted and presented with anadditional $1,000 Lonnie A. and Patty

Pilgrim Scholarship Award. They wereJaime Maskill, Wichita Falls and Haley LynnWatkins, Garland. They are shown abovewith Mr. and Mrs. Pilgrim.

By the time you will have received your newsletter,Extravaganza Le Cirque will be history. Many of ourmembers have responded beyond the call of duty in order toproduce this premier event. We must be ever viligant andresponsive to seize the opportunity to introduce ourselves tothe communities in which we live. We must be willing to paythe price for embracing challenging events that allow us tomaintain our properties and our principles.

The One-Day Reunion will be held August 13, 2005. Weneed to bring in petitions and encourage our Blue Lodgebrothers to take another step toward the light. i stronglyencourage you to be present to see the improvements addedto the Cathedral as a result of the Le Cirque show. The One-Day Reunion should be used as a springboard for the FallReunion. Our new Black Caps are watching us to gauge ourenthusiasm, our devotion and our participation in the greatprinciples of Freemasonry.

Independence Day: America’s BirthdayAlthough July 4th is celebrated as America’s official split from Britain’s rule and the beginning of the American Revolution, theactual series of events show that the process took far longer than a single day. The original resolution was introduced by RichardHenry Lee of Virginia on June 7, 1776, and called for the Continental Congress to declare the United States free from British rule.Three days later a committee headed by Thomas Jefferson was appointed to prepare an appropriate writing for the occasion.

This document that we know as the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress on July 4th although the resolution thatlead to the writing of the Declaration was actually approved two days earlier.

All of this had occurred with some of the delegates to theCongress not even present; New York, for example, did not evenvote on the resolution until July 9th.

Even more interesting is the fact that not a single signature wasappended to the Declaration on July 4th. While most of thefifty-six names were in place by early August, one signer, ThomasMcKean, did not actually sign the Declaration until 1781.

Nevertheless, July 4th was the day singled out to mark theevent of the United States establishing itself as a nation.

Only four American holidays are still celebrated on their propercalendar days: Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s andIndependence Day. Of all the secular holidays, the Fourth ofJuly is the only one whose celebration date resists change. Evenin more provincial times, suggestions to alter the day of thefestival to the preceding Saturday or the following Mondaywhen July 4th fell on Sunday were protested.

The feeling about the sanctity of America’s Independence daywas best expressed in a quotation from the Virginia Gazette onJuly 18th, 1777: “Thus may the 4th of July, that glorious andever memorable day, be celebrated through America, by thesons of freedom, from age to age till time shall be no more.Amen and Amen.”

“Whenever any form of governmentbecomes destructive of these ends(life, liberty and the pursuit ofhappiness), it is the right of thepeople to alter or abolish it, and toinstitute new government.”
