Scottish Rite Members on Active Military Duty and Retired with Disability

If you are a Scottish Rite member who is on active military duty, the Supreme Council has an assessment exemption program, and the Valley of Chicago has a dues exemption program. You only need to inform the Valley of Chicago of your active duty status by calling (800) 774-3467 and your membership dues for that year will be waived.

Please also keep our military personnel and their families in your thoughts and prayers as they fight to preserve our way of life and freedoms.

We thank them for their service to our Great Nation.

Nominations Procedure Scottish Rite Cathedral Board

LET IT BE KNOWN that the annual meeting of the Scottish Rite Cathedral Association will take place on Thursday, May 25, 2017, following the annual meetings of the Van Rensselaer Lodge of Perfection, Chicago Council Princes of Jerusalem, Gourgas Chapter of Rose Croix of Heredom and the Oriental Consistory of Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret, which will begin at 7:00 pm.

The anticipated agenda for the meeting will include reports of the President, Investment Committee, House Committee, Executive Committee, Nominating Committee, and the election of three Directors at Large for the Scottish Rite Cathedral Association Board.

The seats on the Board of Directors up for election are those held currently by Daryl W. Selock, Noel J. Kalis and Jerry D. Sparks.

Daryl W. Selock and Jerry D. Sparks are each eligible for re-election to a second three-year term.

Noel J. Kalis is ineligible for re-election due to term limits imposed by the Association’s Bylaws.

The process of nomination for Director at Large for the Scottish Rite Cathedral Association Board is governed by the Association Bylaws, particularly section 3.10. Nominations for Director may not be made from the floor at the Annual Meeting. All candidates must be registered in advance with the Executive Secretary if seeking an office so that the membership may be notified of each candidacy prior to the Annual Meeting.

In accordance with the Bylaws, the President has appointed a Nominating Committee. This year, the members of the Nominating Committee are:

Nominations for Director at Large may be sent to the Executive Secretary, c/o Scottish Rite, 383 E. Lake Street, Bloomingdale, Illinois 60108.

Any member may submit the name of a person eligible to be a Director to the Executive Secretary or any Nominating Committee member before Thursday, April 6, 2017. The Nominating Committee will recommend candidates for the three Director positions and shall file the same with the Executive Secretary on or before April 20, 2017.

Any member may nominate in writing any other member for the position of Director at Large by registering such nomination with the Executive Secretary on or before April 6, 2017. No nominations may be made after April 6, 2017. All recommendations made by the Nominating Committee, as well as any other nomination registered with the Executive Secretary, will be prominently posted and published for the benefit of the Membership.

Seven degrees, forty-two candidates and 1,266 meals later, the 2016 Fall Reunion came to a close. Held in honor of the National Scottish Rite day, members from across the Valley of Chicago descend-ed on the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Bloomingdale for this historic event.

The Valley of Chicago conferred the 4th, 5th, 13th, 16th, 18th, 30th, and the 32nd degrees. This included the rare 5th degree “Perfect Master” presented by the Lodge of Per-fection. We are also very proud of the 2016 Fall Class that conferred the 16th Degree over lunch. Some of the Fall Class also did a superb presentation of the 30th degree. As usual, Chicago presented its signature showcase 32nd Degree “Sub-lime Prince of the Royal Secret” directed by David R. Koss.

In addition to the degrees, food, fun and fellowship were in abundance over the Reunion. Most importantly, the Valley of Chicago was able to welcome forty-two new class members from across the area. A special thank you goes out to all the vol-unteers who participated in making this reunion possible. Well over 100 members volunteered their time and energy put-ting on this wonderful Reunion. Remem-ber to mark your calendar for April 7-8, 2017, when the Valley of Chicago will host its annual Spring Reunion.

National Scottish Rite Day was a joint venture between the Northern and Southern Masonic Jurisdictions designated to be celebrated in Valleys across the nation on November 12, 2016. The Valley of Chicago combined this special day with the annual Fall Reunion. The first half of the Reunion was held Saturday, November 5th and included live degrees. National Scottish Rite Day was held a week later and featured a large gala dinner, a special patriotic presentation and a guest speaker. The entire event was centered around a salute to our American Veterans.

The evening began by introducing the Valley’s Veterans and honoring them with a special award on stage in front of a packed theater. Then members of the Bloomingdale VFW Post #7539 presented our Nation’s Colors and member Chuck Masny sang “The Star Spangled Banner.” The audience rose and gave these men a standing ovation in appreciation for their service. Finally, Kris Paronto, former Army ranger and military contrac-tor, took to the stage and spoke for over an hour recounting the incidents portrayed in the Hollywood biographical war film, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. He led the audience through his journey with his grip-ping account. All told, this celebration marked a memorable Reunion and included a class of forty-two new members.

VILLAGE OF SKOKIE PROCLAIMS “HOWARD GRAFF DAY”An extraordinary honor was bestowed upon our Brother Howard Graff.Mayor of Skokie, George Van Dusen, proclaimed October 19, 2016 to be “Howard Graff Day.”

Brother Howard L. Graff is the Grand Chancellor of the Grand Lodge of Illinois, as well as a 33o Scottish Rite Mason, member of the Valley of Chicago for fifty-two years and a member of Oriental Lodge #33, A.F. and A.M.

There is not enough time or space in this article to list all of Brother Howard’s Masonic accomplishments in his fifty-three years in Masonry, but one of the most dear to him happened this September when the European Adriatic Association of DeMolay International created the “Howard Graff” Chapter. This will be the first time, after the ethnic and religious wars of the 1990s that young men from 16 to 21 years of age and four different religions (Catholic, Christian-

Orthodox, Muslim and Jews) will be able to sit and work together in a Masonic organization.

Brother Howard joined the Skokie Valley Chapter of DeMolay almost sixty years ago. His steadfast work in International DeMolay throughout the years is now recognized and honored for assisting and bringing the youth of four countries in the Balkans together and potentially aiding 50 million people in that region of the world.

After the proclamation, Mayor George Van Dusen said, “On behalf of the Village of Skokie, residents, family and friends of Howard Graff, we express our gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Howard Graff for his contributions. We wish you good health and happiness. Thank you for helping to make the Village of Skokie one of the best communities in the United States of America.”

Brother Edwin Feldman was born on November 29, 1924 in Hungary.

He was educated in the public schools of Chicago attending Manley High School, later attending DePaul University and the Chicago Medical School. He served in the United States Army in the MASH unit retiring as Captain in 1954. Returning to civilian life he affiliated with Illinois Masonic Hospital. He pioneered the establishment of the Regional Trauma Center.

His medical services in the 1970s and 80s also extended to the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears and Blackhawks. Upon retirement from the active medical staff, he joined the board of trustees where Dr. Feldman became active on the hospital’s Charitable Council. In this capacity, he worked with the Lodges to establish the Masonic Family Health Foundation. The merger with Advocate Hospital in

2001 led to the creation of the Masonic Family Health Foundation to continue the services of Illinois Masonic to Illinois Master Masons.He married Sophia Athena Dussias on September 22, 1950. They have two children, Paul Keith (deceased) and Michael Leslie. After Sophia’s passing he married Marietta (Kuchuris).

Edwin was raised to the degree of Master Mason in DecalogueLodge No. 160 at Skokie, Illinois in 1963.

Brother Feldman joined the Valley of Chicago in the Spring Class of1978. He was honored with the 33rd Degree in 1993.

Ill. Brother Feldman, 33o completed his earthly travels and was taken into the loving arms of the Grand Architect of the Universe on October 6, 2016.

In Memoriam...Edwin Feldman, 33o

Sheridan Ostrander, was born on January 7 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, to Eugene B. and Josephina (nee Muzik) Ostrander. Educated in the Chicago public schools, he graduated in 1949 from the University of Denver with a bachelor of science in business administration. He served his country faithfully in theUnited States Air Force from 1942 - 1946.

On March 27, 1954, Sheridan married Mildred F. Maesson, of Chicago, a loving union which endured until his passing. Bro. Ostrander is survived his daughters, Elizabeth and Janice and son James.

In business, he was Director of the Masonic Relations Department at the now Advocate, Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Sheridan was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Park Hill Lodge No. 148, A.F. & A.M., of Denver Colorado. When moving to the Chicago area he transferred his membership to Glenview Lodge No. 1058 where he served as Worshipful Master in 1967.

Bro. Ostrander joined the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago at the 1955 Fall Reunion. He served as Thrice Potent Master of Van Rensselaer Lodge of Perfection during the years 1977-78. He was coroneted a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Thirty-Third Degree, on September 24, 1980. He also served asthe Valley’s Executive Secretary in 1975 and 1976.

The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library has recently launched the Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives Digital Collections website (http://digitalvgw.omeka.net), which was created in order to provide Scottish Rite members access to some of the riches of the Library & Archives collection.

The site currently includes around 500 documents from the Library & Archives collection and continues to grow. Among the items that have been digitized so far are a large variety of Masonic certificates, a number of founding documents of the Scottish Rite, and a variety of other materials reflective of the depth and breadth of the Library & Archives collection.

One document that may be of interest to those who enjoy seeing where American political history and Scottish Rite history overlap, is the document pictured here. In this letter, President James Madison (1751-1836) requests Connecticut Senator David Daggett’s presence at a special session of the Senate held on March 4, 1817. At this session, Vice President elect Daniel D. Tompkins (1774-1825) was sworn into office, just prior to newly elected President James Monroe’s official inauguration ceremony. Tompkins was governor of New York from 1807 until 1817 and then served as Vice President under Monroe from 1817 to 1825. Tompkins’ name may also be familiar to you because of his Scottish Rite connection. He served as the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction’s first Sovereign Grand Commander from 1813 until 1825.

The Madison letter is among items digitized from the Library & Archives’ G. Edward Elwell, Jr., Autograph Collection which consists of documents collected by G. Edward Elwell, Jr., 33° (1886-1969) a member of Caldwell Consistory (Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania) and a professional printer. The items in the Elwell Collection, which was generously donated to the Museum & Library by the Caldwell Consistory, span nearly 500 years of history (1489-1960), and each contains the signature of a well-known figure from American or European history.

Digitized documents from the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library are now online!

The Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives Digital Collections website is built on the Omeka platform, an open source web-publishing platform for the online display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions. The Digital Collections website gives users access to high resolution images of each document. Robust cataloging for each document insures that users searching for materials will find them.

We hope that you’ll explore the Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives Digital Collections website and take a look at the many wonderful documents that the Library & Archives preserves and makes accessible through the generosity of the Supreme Council, 33°, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, NMJ, USA, and its members. Scholarship Opportunities Scholarships Open to the Public

Health Career Fields: The recipient must intend to enter the field of health care. Health care includes (but is not limited to) nursing, physical or occupational therapy, radiology, anesthesiology, etc. Masonic relationship is not required.

Sherwood and Evelyn Kresin: This scholarship has an exception for the undergraduate only restriction. The recipient may be in an undergraduate or a graduate course of study. There is no restriction regarding the recipient’s course of study. Masonic relationship is not required.

Colville Wilson – Graduate degree in nursing or health services for children in the State of Illinois.

Scholarships Requiring the Applicant to have a Masonic RelativeGrand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Illinois: Must be a relative of an Illinois Master Mason. The applicant must have a father or grandfather who is (or was at the time of his death) a member in good standing as an Illinois Master Mason. The applicant does not have to be a resident of Illinois.

Robert B. Perkins: There is no restriction regarding the recipient’s course of study. Masonic relationship is required. The applicant must have a father, grandfather, brother, or uncle who is (or was, if deceased) a member in good standing of an Illinois Scottish Rite Valley.

Louis L. Williams: The applicant must attend Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. There is no restriction regarding the recipient’s course of study. Masonic relationship is required. The applicant must have a father, grandfather, brother, or uncle who is (or was, if deceased) a member in good standing of an Illinois Scottish Rite Valley.

Abbott Scholarship: Named for Leon M. Abbott, Sovereign Grand Commander (1921-1932). The recipient must be an undergraduate student attending an accredited college or university for the upcoming academic year, with a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 grade scale and be a child of a Scottish Rite Mason in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.

Scottish Rite Scholarship

One combined application is used for all but the Wilson scholarship. The scholarship application is available at www.scottishritechicago.org. Download application, complete and mail to address on application. Submission of scholarships begin December 1, 2016, and will end April 1, 2017.
