Scottish Swimming
Supporting Positive Coaching Scotland
The Positive Coach Scotland (PCS) programme is centred on creating a positive environment in
youth sport - one which focuses on encouraging effort and learning, improving performance and
fostering competition. This initiative, delivered by sportscotland in partnership with Winning
Scotland Foundation and local and national partners has received high acclaim from many
international coaches. The ethos of PCS has been well documented by Olympic Gold Medalists
swimmer Summer Sanders, who also serves on the advisory board of the parent program of PCS in
the USA, the Positive Coaching Alliance.
This program, first developed in the USA, is now widely viewed as one of the most successful ways
of inspiring young athletes to become winners!!
This cultural change programme is designed to create a positive environment for young people in
sport, by teaching them to:
- appreciate the value of effort and learning;
- improve personal performance;
- foster a competitive, but fair, sporting mentality;
- deal positively with mistakes.
