Get off your knees and apply your love of gar-dening and color using harmony, contrast and the rules of design.
Let’s express intimate places in the garden.

You will experiment with color combinations that work well together and some that are sur-prising in order to increase your confidence in making color choices.
The basics of soft pastel will be covered as well as worm’s eye perspective and rich texture making. Website: www.lizkenyon.com

The focus of the class will be to combine the “reality” of the landscape as seen by the camera with the sentiment and passion of your own “vision.” • Learn to simplify and distill the confusing shapes to their most important components. • Use “color as value.” • Use unexpected color combinations in unpredictable ways to convey how you see AND feel about the world we live in. • Technique – including negative painting methods - will be studied also, as a necessary component to the “big picture” of landscape painting. There will be demos, exercises, critique and lots of painting time. My old teacher, Dan McCaw, used to say that all you need for a good painting is the right shapes with the right color and the right value. Simple but powerful idea. This class will focus on those fundamentals. You will learn to see shapes, sim-plify values and develop a stronger color sense. Specific exercises will be combined with open painting of still life and costumed models that will be valuable for painters of all levels. The instructor will do some general demonstration but most of the time you will be painting with individual attention from the instructor, tailored to your needs. Pastels and oils are welcome. Working from the model, students will explore the art of painting the portrait from life. This class is primarily about painting the head in a convinc-ing, representational manner. Initially, emphasis will be placed on shape and tonal relationships. Students will have the chance to paint a number of simple two to three tone head studies, and then we will move into color relationships. The poses will gradually lengthen over the course of the weeks, as we begin to seek orchestration of shape, value, color, and edge. The related topics of composition and pictorial design will also be addressed. Students can expect instructor dem-onstrations, and plenty of individual attention. This class will be helpful for those just beginning to approach the portrait, as well as experienced painters wanting to hone their existing skills. Website: www.robertlemler.com

How often have you wanted to try your hand at art but always felt that you needed to have some background to get started? Good news. No expe-rience is needed to participate in this workshop, only a desire to work in clay in a figurative format. If you have experience with clay, that’s great too. This workshop is designed to be a no stress experi-ence. With both the portrait and the figure, we will concentrate on the fundamentals, including the proportions, the features, simple constructions and the expressive composition of the sculpture. Our goal with the portrait sculpture is to learn to attain a likeness of our subject in clay. The focus of the figurative sculpture is working with a live model and building an armature. We will then work with proportions of the human body and the expressive qualities of gestures. Students may work on any or all of these offerings, using the model as our reference.

The monsoon season is a uniquely exciting time of year for the Valley of the Sun. As artists, we can employ color to express the explosive wind, contrasting atmospheric hues, dynamic clouds and rustling palms. These dramatic textures and rich colors are perfect for soft pastels!
We will follow a simple process using form, value contrast, and color harmony to achieve the drama of these thunderous skies. We will depict cloud formations that include blown-out colors coupled with peaceful grays and rhythmic palms that expand across the color wheel.
This workshop will be open to all levels. Advanced students will be challenged and begin-ning students will feel comfortable with the demonstrations and personal attention. Website: www.lizkenyon.com

This workshop will be taught in the spectacular surroundings of the Grand Tetons, outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The class will include daily instructor demonstrations each morning at 9am. After the demo, students will paint until 12:30pm. At that time we will break for an extended lunch and be back for an afternoon session from 3:30pm-6:00pm. This extended break is designed to allow students to head into town and gallery hop, or take a mid day nap before returning for the good afternoon light and shadows. Each day we will visit beautiful vistas in the Grand Tetons with spots that include lakes, streams and trees. A maxi-mum of 15 students will be able to take the class, so sign up early and reserve a spot. John has been painting in the Tetons for many years and is rep-resented by Astoria Fine Art Gallery on Jackson’s Town Square. His works can also be viewed at his Website: www.johnhughesstudio.com
