zona: What subject do you teach? What do you love about teaching Science? Ms. KraMer: This year I am teaching Freshman Biology, Sophomore Chemistry and Robotics. I love the idea of teaching a subject where we are constantly learning more about the world and the universe. I like the idea that we cannot always see what we are studying and have to rely on things like temperature change, color change, etc to indicate something happened in an experiment. zona: What made you want to become a teacher? Ms. KraMer: I originally graduated with a degree in Journalism from UW-Madison. However, I found I did not really enjoy that field. I was great at being creative, but not on someone else’s timeline. A friend asked me to help coach a high school team and I found that I really enjoyed working with that age group, they energized me. So I went back to school to study science and become a teacher. zona: What is your favorite thing about teaching? Ms. KraMer: My favorite part of teaching is watching a student’s face when the reach that “aha moment”. This can come from learning something they didn’t know or mastering a difficult concept but either way that “Hey! I get it!” look is priceless. zona: What inspires you? Ms. KraMer: I find that the thing that inspires me most in my teaching is planning with teachers who are NOT in the science field. I often find creative and fun things they are doing that can be used in science. I think the whole process is one big puzzle that we’re trying to put together and I simply love puzzles. zona: What do you love about Tesseract? Ms. KraMer: When I chose Tesseract, I was looking for a school that combined the rigor that you find at a school like Brophy (I taught there about 8 or 9 years ago) and the project–based curriculum that I taught at Wildwood School in LA. I realized from these two schools that the best students are the ones who are asked to deeply consider and discuss the topics but also are held responsible for striving for excellence. zona: You have influenced the philosophies behind the Upper School. What are these and why are they important? Ms. KraMer: When I arrived in Phoenix, I had come from a school that was a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools. One of the things that I brought with me was a strong role for advisory and the “Habits of Heart and Mind” as a framework for learning. The “Habits” are things we would like our students to do, not because they are asked, but because they are habits. These include things like being persistent, listening and cooperating with others, and contribution to the common good. I feel that that helps create a safe, collaborative envirionment. I also wanted to be at a school where the teachers and the students really do work together. At Tesseract, the Sophomore and Freshman advisors work with the students to build a haunted house for the middle school. We have experimented as a group, giving up technology and seeing how it impacts our time, and we recently took a full day off from school to go out into the community and learn a new task or subject together. One group studied architecture, another orienteering, and my group studied world

religions. zona: You are going on a trip in the Spring. Tell us about it. What science will the students learn there? Ms. KraMer: This year I will be taking the freshman class to Hawaii. In the past, this trip was taken with sophomores and we studied Ocean Chemistry, so this is a change for us. Trips are an essential part of our curriculum. When we travel, we rarely go to places to just “see”. Instead, we want our students doing actual work. This year the students will be studying Biology. They will have an opportunity to write labs and collect data while on the trip. Part of the trip will involve visiting those places that allow them to complete their experiment. The other part of the trip involves working with universities to learn more about the unique biological aspects of flora and fauna in Hawaii. Of course, we will be hiking, snorkeling and absolutely enjoying Hawaii at the same time. zona: If you could meet any famous person and hang out with them for a day, who would you meet and what would you want to do with them? Ms. KraMer: If I could, I would love to meet either Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams. Both of these men are (were–Douglas Adams) Science Fiction authors with a great sense of society and humor. Each of their books include oblique commentary on our society and, as a result, causes me to look at the world differently. I’d love to find out how their minds work and how they turn their ideas into books. As I said, I get most of my inspiration from learning how other people, and other disciplines, see the world.

zona: What made you start Prime Time Athletics? Chad: Prime Time Athletics started in the Fall season of 2009. My wife and I knew that we wanted to start our own business and we knew we wanted to involve our whole family, while and at the same time, working with

kids and sports. It’s a perfect fit for our family and we just love what we do. Starting in the fall of 2009 with just 95 kids in our league, we have now grown to over 700 kids and 12 locations valley-wide, while

moving forward to many surrounding states. It’s been an adventure but one we couldn’t be more proud of. zona: What sets Prime Time Athletics apart from other leagues? Chad: Prime Time Athletics offers a fun,

family oriented but competitive flag football league. There are several games going on simultaneously while offering yummy concessions and entertaining music. There are boys and girls ages 5-14 years old playing all day long. zona: What

do you love about Prime Time Athletics? Chad: My wife Heather and I love that we work side by side with our own 5 kids while creating an environment that teaches the game of flag football in an enjoyable but competitive atmosphere. The relationships that we have created with the community and local businesses has been unbelievable!! We LOVE what we do! zona: What are your hopes for the future of Prime Time Athletics? Chad: Heather and I hope that one day very soon Prime Time Athletics becomes a household name near you so all kids can participate in the sport that they love ... FLAG FOOTBALL!!!

zona: What is your team name? What position do you play? Max: My team is the Cowboys. I play Wide Receiver. Grady: Cowboys. I play Running Back. Connor: My team is the Steelers. I play Wide Receiver. zona: When did you start playing football? How long have you been with Prime Time? Max: I have been playing football since I was 6 years old. I have been with Prime Time for 3 years. Grady: I have been playing since I was 6 years old and 3 years with Prime Time. Connor: I have been playing since I was 4 and with Prime Time since I was 6. zona: What do you love about football? Max: It is fun. Scoring is fun. Grady: It’s fun scoring touchdowns. Connor: It’s just fun. I like scoring touchdowns. zona: What makes Prime Time Athletics awesome? Max: It’s awesome because my parents own it. I have a lot of friends that play with Prime Time. Grady: The teams at Prime Time are really good and I like that we get to play games every Saturday. Connor: It’s awesome because there are tournaments at the end and the competitions you get to play in. zona: Who is your coach? What do you like about them? Max: Coach Lou. I like him because he is nice. Grady: Coach Lou. He’s nice but he is tough with us too. zona: What is your team like? Max: We are fast. Grady: My friends are on my team ... they are nice. zona: How long have you been playing hockey? What position? What is your team name? What number are you? deCKer: Well having a mom that’s been around competitive figure skating her whole life definitely meant that I’d be introduced to ice skating at a young age. I actually was figure skating for several months before I gained an interest for hockey, and by the time I was on my first real hockey team I was around eight years old. Currently I play as a center for the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes and I wear number fourteen. zona: Where all have you traveled to for hockey? What has been your favorite place so far that you have been to for hockey? deCKer: I’ve traveled to a bunch of places for hockey, but a majority of our tournaments and showcases are in the eastern states. Playing in Canada is pretty special because the hockey atmosphere and love for the game there is amazing. zona: What do you love about hockey? deCKer: What I love about hockey is that it’s such a physical and fast paced game. It’s also just a really fun, competitive sport that’s both fun to watch and participate in. zona: Who is your favorite NHL team? Fave player? Why? deCKer: My favorite NHL team is the Phoenix Coyotes. Daniel Briere has been my favorite player ever since he played for the Coyotes in the 2002-2003 season. I love that he’s a small, skilled player that uses his size and work ethic to his advantage to make great plays and for the most part I try to base the way I play after him. zona: What is your best skill? What are you best known for on the ice? deCKer: I’d like to think my best skill is my skating. I’ve always had coaches that believe speed and skating technique are

some of the most important qualities you need in hockey, so I put a lot of my time into that area. What I’m known for on the ice is probably using my speed to

create space to make plays and being able to perform in high pressure situations. zona: Are you guys allowed to check? Do you like to check? deCKer: Yes, we

are allowed to check. I’m no heavy hitter myself but when it’s necessary I’ll play the body and it’s a fun part of the sport. zona: Do you know where you are

going to college? (If no- where do you want to go?) Are you going to play hockey in college? deCKer: I don’t know where I will be going to college yet. I’m also not

too picky in where I will go for school, but playing college hockey is something that I definitely plan on doing. zona: Is your team tight on and off the ice? What is your

team like? deCKer: Yes, we are really tight on and off the ice. All of the guys have great attitudes and focus towards the teams success and encouraging others

to push themselves to better. Outside of hockey everyone’s pretty close and we all hangout and have a good time. zona: Tell us about some

of the wins/trophies you guys have won. deCKer: Our season just started so I’ll just say some accomplishments from my past teams. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of a state championship

winning team for the past three years. Making it to the national championship in 2010 was a great achievement for our team,

and it was really cool to be a part of that.

Hello, my name is Carolina Haros, and I came into this world a little earlier than my parent’s expected. Many people do not know that my twin brother and I were born 14 weeks premature. We were born at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital at Good Samaritan. My brother weighed 1 lb. 13 oz. and was 13 inches long. I weighed 1 lb. 12 oz. and was 12 inches long. We were so small that people could hold us in the palm of their hands. My grandmother made us clothes because even doll clothes were too big for us. We stayed in the hospital close to 3 months before we were well enough to go home. Seventeen years later, we are healthy and active teenagers. We both attend Horizon Honors High School in Ahwatukee.

Carolina: What type of things are going to be at your fundraiser for people to purchase? Grant: There will be CoreBalance packages to purchase for our group classes. We offer group classes in yoga, RealRyder spin, as well as Barre and Core Fusion. In addition, there will be raffles for various items that have been donated. There will also be CoreBalance branded clothing, towels, yoga mats and water bottles. Carolina: Where are all of the proceeds going? Grant: 50% of the proceeds from the sales of the CoreBalance group packages will be donated to the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation, NICU Unit. In addition, 100% of the proceeds of the raffle sales will be donated to the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation, NICU Unit. Carolina: You are doing a great thing for the NICU, what made you want to do this? Grant: Our son Bradyn was born prematurely at 28 weeks and weighed only 2 pounds, 7 ounces. However, he was a strong little guy. When was born, he was breathing on his own and only needed something called a CPAP to help keep his lungs inflated. He also had to have an IV and a feeding tube. We knew that he would have to spend the first few months of his life in the NICU. What we did not know is how it would impact the rest of our lives. As a first time parent, having a baby is scary enough. Having a baby that early and not knowing how many challenges he would face was terrifying. However, the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at the NICU made us feel comfortable knowing he was receiving the best care possible. In addition, the little things, like the decorations on his isolette, the pictures they took, the scrapbook items, and the ongoing love and support made us feel like we were part of a family and made the whole experience so much easier. As just one example, my wife had a birthday while Bradyn was in the NICU. When we came for our evening time

with him, there was a birthday card in his crib that was from Bradyn! It is a card that we will cherish forever. These little things that meant so much to us are some of the things that can be funded by the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation. So, we want to raise funds so that other NICU families can feel the same support. Carolina: How is your baby doing now? Grant: He is doing great! He is healthy and happy and

strong. He is growing so fast - he weighs over 11 pounds now. He is also starting to smile a lot, which fills our hearts in a way we never thought possible. Carolina: I was prematurely born as well, what is the most important thing that you will take away from this whole experience? Grant: Having a premature baby is such an emotional experience. We were never quite sure what each day would hold for us or what challenges he would need to overcome. So, we gained a perspective that many people do not have. We gained

ZONA: What is asthma? AMERICAN LUNG ASSO-CIATION: Asthma is known to be a complex condi-tion with a spectrum of causes and contributing fac-tors, with airway inflammation as its central attribute. Asthma is a chronic airway disease, characterized by recurrent symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. The severity of asthma varies from person to person. ZONA: What causes asthma? ALA: The truth is, there is not a conclusive answer to what causes asthma. It often runs in families, but this does not explain how one sibling can experience asthma,

while another does not. There have been some environmental aspects related to people with asth-ma as well. This is especially true in adult onset asthma…which is often environmental. Overweight children have two times the risk of developing asthma, so obesity may be a factor. ZONA: What ef-fects can asthma have on health? ZONA: How many Americans are directly affected by asthma? ALA: An estimated 17.7 million Americans suffer from asthma; more than 5.6 million are children under age 18. Asthma ranks eighth in prevalence among chronic conditions in our nation and is a leading cause of serious illness among children. Asthma brings more than 1.9 million Americans to emergency rooms each year. Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism attributed to chronic conditions. (Lung Disease Data, The American Lung Association, 2003) ZONA: What do you do for kids with asthma in schools? ALA: We have a few in school programs that support children with asthma. Asthma 101 Presentations can be offered to those who are responsible for the children with asthma in the school setting (parent groups, teachers, school nurses, health aides, coaches, etc). Another program is Open Airways (OAS) for schools is an asthma management program for children grades 3-5. It consists of six 40 minute group lessons for children with asthma held dur-ing the school day or after school. OAS uses group discussion, stories, games and role play to help students take part in the program. The program works by teaching children that it is okay to have asthma and that they can take control of their asthma. Some of the topics covered in OAS include basic information about asthma, recognizing and managing asthma symptoms, using medication, avoiding asthma triggers, getting enough exercise, and doing well at school.

ZONA: What are symptoms of asthma? ALA: Symptoms can vary for individuals with asthma. Children and adults can exhibit one or all of the following: coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and others depending on the person. ZONA: What treatments are there for asthma? ALA: The primary treatment for asthma is a step approach using different classifications of medications and asthma education (to teach about asthma warning signs and avoidance of trig-gers.) Wheezing... shortness of breath... chest tightness... coughing, all symptoms of asthma... have you ever witnessed a child go through an asthma attack? I did recently in the courtyard of the Tempe Market Place, right infront of the movie theater, and I felt so helpless. The little boy finally settled down and was okay, unfortunately though, it’s commonplace here in Phoenix. So, I wanted to learn more about this chronic (long-term) lung disease, and I figured, why not go straight to the experts, so I spoke to a representative at the American Lung Association to further educate myself on this all too familiar disease:

At the end of our NICU journey, we were a stronger family that had learned so much and made so many new friends (our NICU family) so we really wouldn’t change a thing. Carolina: Anything that else that you would like our readers to know about the fundraiser or Core Balance? Grant: We want people to know a little about CoreBalance Studio. We are a local family that has a passion for fitness and a balanced life. So, we wanted to create a fitness studio where everyone feels welcome and everyone can be inspired and motivated. We also want people to know that, as local business owners, we are very committed to giving back to our community. The fundraiser will be held on October 19th from 5-8 pm at CoreBalance Studio, located at 3240 E. Camelback (in the Moda Fina building). It will be a fun and casual event. Many of our amazing instructors will be there to provide class demonstrations and to answer any questions. We are very proud of the studio and look forward to having our friends and neighbors stop in and help us raise money for such a great cause.

zona: How long have you been playing the piano? What was the hardest thing so far about learning how to play? roberto: I’ve been playing for 3 years. MarCelo: 3 years. Learning to play while using both hands. zona: What do you love about playing the piano? roberto: It’s very fun to play piano,I learn many songs that I can play to my adorable family. MarCelo: I like to play piano when I can learn new songs. zona: How many hours a week do you practice? Who is your piano teacher? roberto: I practice almost every day, but I have piano class once a week with an most amazing teacher Mrs. Lory Frost. MarCelo: I practiced twice a week, but today I learned to play recorder with the same piano teacher Mrs. Lori Frost. zona: What is your favorite piece to play? roberto: The Girl from Ipanema, Bossa Nova, from a braziliam composer named Vinicius de Morais. It was one of the first songs I learned to play with my brother. MarCelo: Green Leaves on the piano and It’s Ode to Joy on the recorder. zona: What do you love about attending Freedom Academy? roberto: Where do I start? I have awesome friends, great teachers and a kind–hearted principal. What else could I want? MarCelo: I like all my friends and all the teachers. zona: Who is your teacher at Freedom? What are your top 3 favorite things about your teacher? roberto: Mr. Fleggle. He’s hilarious. It is a lot of fun to learn with him, something you never forget, like one day he was teaching about the Boston Tea Party , so each of us would bring an object that starts with “T” and destroy it. MarCelo: I actually have more than one teacher. They are all kind, but the funniest one is my Social Studies teacher Mr. Fleegle. He smashed a cup to teach our class how the URSS got separated. zona: What is your favorite movie? Fave television show? Fave place to go on vacation? roberto: My favorite movie is Jurassic Park 1, 2, 3, and I hope they make a fourth one. Since I was little I’ve been facinated with dinosaurs. MarCelo: My favorite vacation was when the whole family went to Cancun, we swam with dolphins and I could pet one of my favorite animals, the manatee.

zona: How long have you been playing the piano? What is your favorite song to play? Do you like to sing when playing the piano? sidney: I’ve been playing for a year and a half, my favorite song to play is Turning Tables by Adele. I don’t sing while playing the piano because it makes things too complicated. zona: What is the hardest thing that you have had to learn? sidney: The hardest thing I’ve had to learn is probably how to read sheet music notes for the piano. zona: You are involved with the school newspaper, tell us about that? What is your favorite thing to do for the newspaper? sidney: In the newspaper I’ve got to say we’ve got some really detailed and talented writers and there are only the four of us. I do the photography and type up the columns. My favorite thing is doing the photography. zona: What are some of your hobbies besides piano that you enjoy? sidney: My other hobby is photography. I like taking pictures of animals, people, and objects. zona: You’re fluent in Portuguese, how cool! How did that come about? Was it hard to learn another language? What is your fave Portuguese word and what does it mean? sidney: My father and grandma speak Portuguese and I understood it before I could speak it. Once I could understand I started to speak the language. My favorite word is cachorro, which means dog. zona: What are some of your favorite subjects in school? What grade are you in? sidney: My favorite subject is Science and French and I’m in 6th grade. zona: If you could meet a famous person, dead or alive, who would it be? And what would you guys do? sidney: If I could meet a famous person it would be Adele and I would play music with her and go have fun and possibly teach her a song on the piano.

zona: How long have you been playing basketball? What position do you play? Is this your favorite position to play? Conor: I first started playing basketball when I was 5 or 6 and I was starting first grade. (I was on a “school team” with my friends) I typically play Shooting Guard or Small Forward on my club teams and those are my two favorite positions because I like playing on the wing of the three-point line. zona: What grade are you in? How long have you been at ICSAZ? Conor: I am currently in the eighth grade and this is my first year at International Charter School of Arizona. I love attending ICSAZ because all of the teachers are nice and really care about the students as people not just as a student. The staff also allows students to be able to work at their own pace so that they feel comfortable and prepared. zona: You are playing football now; what position do you play in football? Conor: On our school’s football team I play wide receiver and safety those two are my favorite positions because I love being able to read the offense and try to get an interception and I also enjoy running a route that gets me to get open for a touchdown. zona: What is your jersey number? Any special meaning to you? Conor:My jersey’s number is 15 and there isn’t really a special meaning behind my decision other than the fact that I like Tim Tebow and he wears 15 on the Jets. zona: Which sport do you prefer? And why? Conor: I prefer basketball to football just because I’ve been playing the game longer and because it’s more up-tempo. I also like that all of my friends play basketball so if we ever get bored we can go outside and play in the driveway. zona: What are some of your favorite subjects in school? Any favorite teachers? Conor: My favorite subjects in school would have to be Math and Science because they always have a definite answer to a question while Language Arts and Art don’t have one good answer they have many. And, my favorite teacher would have to be Mrs. Hohl (My math teacher) because she’s really funny and she teaches an amazing subject. zona: If you could shoot hoops with anyone who would it be? Conor: If I could shoot hoops with one person I’d probably pick LeBron James or Michael Jordan because those two are my favorite players of all-time. zona: Who is your favorite NBA team? Who is your favorite Football team? Who do you think is going to the Superbowl this year? Conor: My favorite NBA team would have to be the Miami Heat and my favorite NFL team would need to be the New England Patriots. Also, I thought the Patriots were going to win the Super Bowl this year but, lately they haven’t been performing as well as I expected. zona: If you were a superhero what would your magic power be? Conor: If I could have any super power it would probably be invisibility because if anything embarrassing happens (Which it does … a lot) then I could just disappear and leave the room. Plus, it’d also be cool to be able to leave class early and the teacher would have no idea and, even if they did catch me I could make faces at them while I was in detention.

zona: Why do you love music the best out of every other subject? avery: It is fun to play instruments in music. zona: Who is your music teacher? Tell me your top 3 favorite things about this teacher. avery: Mr. Aaron is our music teacher. He makes music fun, teaches us to write music, and we sing. zona: What is your favorite thing that you have done this year in music? avery: My favorite thing so far is to learn to play the piano. zona: What is your favorite instrument to play? Why? avery: The piano is my favorite instrument. I want to play the piano at the talent show. zona: What are your top 3 favorite things about Scottsdale Country Day School? avery: SCDS is quiet and the classes are small. The teachers spend time with me. I have lots of friends too. zona: Why do you love P.E. the best out of every other subject? JaCKson: I like P.E. because I like being active and its fun that I get to learn how certain body parts of your body work. zona: Who is your P.E. teacher? Tell me your top 3 favorite things about this teacher? JaCKson: Coach Andy is so much fun to be around and he educates us on how to play and do different sports properly. I also like him because he is nice and loves to be around kids. zona: What is your favorite thing that you have done this year in P.E.? JaCKson: My favorite thing to play in P.E. is cricket because its fun to learn something that I have never played before. zona: What sport are you the best at? Why? JaCKson: The sport I am best at is baseball because I put in a lot of hard work and lots of practice to hopefully one day follow in my dads footsteps. My family has always been a huge fan of baseball and that is how I became interested in playing. zona: What are your top 3 favorite things about Scottsdale Country Day School? JaCKson: My three favorite things about SCDS is that there are a lot of fun kids that go there. I love the teachers, they’re awesome. They make learning fun and I never feel intimidated asking for help when I don’t understand

something. zona: Why do you love iPads the best out of every other subject? henry: It is fun to learn with games. zona: Who is your iPad teacher? Tell me your top 3 favorite things about this teacher. henry: Every teacher uses the iPad. After learning Mandarin, Spanish, and Math, I get to play the games on the iPad. It is fun to do math on the iPad. zona: What is your favorite thing that you have done this year with the iPads? henry: I know all the states and where they are on the map. When everyone wins, we cheer. It doesn’t matter who wins, we have fun. zona: What is your favorite app on the iPad? Why? henry: ”Stack the State” because we learn things about the United States of America. zona: What are your top 3 favorite things about Scottsdale Country Day School? henry: I love “reading buddies” with the big kids and being with all my friends. My teachers do fun things like science. zona: Why do you love Mandarin the best out of every other subject? layla: It is fun to learn another language and I like to write the words. zona: Who is your Mandarin teacher? Tell me your top 3 favorite things about this teacher. layla: Ms. Yu-Ting is patient and helpful in getting me to learn the correct words and symbols. She tells great stories about China. zona: What is your favorite thing that you have done this year with Mandarin? layla: Learning numbers and driving my family crazy with singing the number song. zona: What is your favorite word or saying in Mandarin? Why is it your favorite? layla: Hello! It’s fun and friendly to say. zona: What are your top 3 favorite things about Scottsdale Country Day School? layla: I like it because it is a smaller school and my teachers give me all the help I need; I’m never afraid here. Everyone is kind to each other, its easy to be friends, and our specials make it that much more fun! I’m learning to be confident in my schoolwork and myself and it makes me happy! And my family too!
