Seen & Heard Shortly after this feature was
introduced, a Tarbet resident was eager
that the plight of a ferryman’s car
should be announced to all the readers. Little
did he know that a few months later, he
would find himself in the very same situation!
From the archives Issue 3 August 2006
PC David Inglis announced his forthcoming retirement.
RBS intimated the possibility of installing a cash
machine in the new filling station building when it is
complete.
Assynt Centre was under threat of closure.
Christmas Carol Service Everyone in the community is invited to take part in the
carol service in Scourie Church of Scotland on Sunday
21st Dec at 6pm.
Tea, coffee, juice and mince pies will be served in the
church hall afterwards.
Those who wish may contribute
to the Christmas appeal to
support the work of the
Christian Blind Mission which
seeks to treat and prevent
conditions that cause blindness in
children and adults.
Scourie girl gets award
Alison Milne, daughter of Christine MacDonald,
Minchview, has won a national accolade for her top
quality work for the Pituitary Foundation Endocrine
Nurse Helpline. Alison has won ‘Helpline Employee of
the Year’, one of only 5 annual awards made by the
Helplines Partnership. She was nominated by her
colleagues at the foundation who she has worked for
for seven years as their only Endocrine Specialist
Nurse & Advisor. The helpline, which Alison runs from
home, is a
valuable service
for patients,
carers and
relatives of
those who have
been diagnosed
with a pituitary
condition. Along
with manning
the helpline,
Alison
frequently
fundraises for
the Pituitary
Foundation.
Scourie News
Edition 102 December 2014
Christmas Greetings
Anyone wishing to place a greeting in the special
edition of the Scourie News should have their forms
completed and returned to the shop by Sat 6th Dec at
the latest. An extra form has been attached to this
edition as well as more being available in the shop for
those who have misplaced them!
Scourie Primary School will be running its usual local
Christmas card delivery service. The box will be in the
shop from Mon 8th Dec until Thurs 18th Dec with
deliveries happening at regular intervals. The cost
remains at 10p per card and monies
should be put into the box
along with your cards.
At the recent table top sale and craft fair held in
Achfary hall, the grand total of £655 was raised for
the Highland Hospice. This included the sale of charity
cards and calendars by Christine MacDonald whilst
Karen Gregory organized the other stall holders and
the tea and cake sales. They would both like to thank
everyone for their support as stall holders and as
customers, making it a very successful day.
Pub quiz
It was with great delight to many regulars that
Carol-anne Moynes hosted the first of this winter’s pub
quiz nights recently. With 8 teams entering, the
competition was tough. The toilet roll booby prize was
awarded to one of the all-male youngster teams with
the unprintable name, whilst the winning team was aptly
named ‘It’s no easy!’ and were presented the cash pot
and a bottle of whisky.
Due to very busy diaries, there will be no pub quiz in
December, but it is hoped that a date can be arranged
for January. Plenty time to revise your general
knowledge!
Village Hall
At the second attempt of holding an AGM, it was
possible to form a committee to oversee the running of
the village hall. However new members are always
welcome and encouraged to come forward. As the
nursery has moved out of the hall, the income from
rent has reduced but this has freed up the diary. Ideas
and suggestions for potential events would be
welcomed by the committee.
The new committee is due to meet in mid-December.
Keep an eye on the local notice boards for any
forthcoming events.
The mice have invaded the hall and we are trying to
control them. Mouse traps are set in areas of the
kitchen, stage and library loft. All have warning signs
by them. Please can hall users ensure that the building
is left in a clean condition and that all foodstuffs are
removed?
All crockery and cutlery has been
dishwashed, thanks to Gill and Jean,
and placed in wall cupboards. All hall
users please make sure that
crockery is replaced in the cupboards without
overfilling them.
BAM Nutall
As a thank you to the local community following their
contract at the Maldie hydro scheme at Kylestrome,
the Glasgow based contractors, BAM Nutall, kindly
agreed to print the Scourie News each month. Despite
their contract having finished some time ago, this
arrangement has continued until now and has been a
great saving to the community council. The staff in
Glasgow, especially Annmaria Colletta, have been very
helpful and obliging. With this arrangement drawing to
a conclusion, the community council would like to
sincerely thank BAM Nutall and their staff for all their
assistance. We will continue to email a copy of the
Scourie News to their offices as many of the staff like
to keep in touch with what is happening in our corner.
Scourie Website
The community council has asked that local businesses
be aware that they can advertise on the Scourie
website for an annual fee of £10. Anyone wishing to
advertise should contact Pete Tuck. All monies raised
will go to the development company for the ongoing
developments in the communities.
The Scourie website (www.scourie.co.uk) is a resource
that is viewable worldwide. After Christmas, people will
be planning holidays for next year, and the website is
the showcase they will use to discover about Scourie.
What to do, where to stay, where to eat. To do this,
the site needs to be up to date, and correct. Please let
me know of any village, or other local events, so that I
can keep things updated.
Pete Tuck.
Christmas Events
The pupils and staff of Scourie Primary School would
like to invite everyone to come to their annual
Christmas show which will take place in the village hall
on the evening of Tuesday 16th December. This year,
the children will be telling the story of Christmas and
some of the worldwide traditions. Refreshments will be
served, with mince pies and biscuits kindly supplied by
Madeline Stephens of Scourie Guest House.
The community Christmas party will take place in the
village hall on Thursday 18th Dec. The fun and games
begin at 1.30pm and will be followed by the party tea. A
special visitor is hoped to arrive at approx. 3.30pm. All
members of the community are welcome to attend and
join in with the children’s delight as they build up to
Christmas.
Scourie Primary School
The children of P1-4 would like to thank everyone who
has responded to their recent questionnaire to former
pupils about their school days. They have found all the
results very interesting. Anyone who still has a form to
return can hand it in at any time or any former pupils
who have been missed should ask the school for a copy
of the questions.
We are also still look for old photos of the school and
would be interested to see any you can lend to us. They
can be photos of the pupils or the buildings or school
events. We will copy photos and return the originals to
you as quickly as possible.

November weather It has been a “topsy-turvy” autumn. August and October were both the 2nd wettest since 1992. August was 8 mm short of the record, and over twice the 20 year average, while October was 20 mm short and 1.5 times the average. September and November have been the opposite, and relatively dry. September was the 3rd driest September, but November currently stands as the driest since Alistair started recording the weather in 1992. Still 2 days to go though!!
We’ve had 54 mm (188) so far this month, the most falling on the 7th with 12 mm. There have been 14 days where nothing was recorded. Temperatures have been about the same as last year, with average min and max being 5.9 (5.4) and 9.4 (9.5) deg C. Extreme minimums were a high of 10 deg on 12th, and 3 deg on 9th and 20th. High and low maximums were 15 deg on 1st, and 7 deg on 20th.
The solar panels have produced 36 (34.9) kW, an average of 1.3 kW with a high of 2.97 on 11th. (Last year’s records in brackets.)
