How to selectthe right kind ofhome theater screen
To start your own home theatreTo select a screen for your home theatre, the size, materials, and method of installation are some basic considerations. These factors are, in turn, determined by the location and screen position. Therefore the first step is to determine the space for setting up the home theatre.
1. Location and position of the screenIf you do not have a room specially for your home theatre, we recommend you consider a location which is possible for both the daily life and home theatre use.
Also, how you are using the space will affect the visual image so you should consider the location of the installation before choosing the screen.
Use of Wall
Using the longer side of the room provides a longer
distance of projection and therefore a larger visual
image, whereas a shorter side will produce a sharper
and clearer image. This is one major consideration
in determining the final product of the projected
image.
Image will be affected by how the space is utilised
Using the longer side of the roomYou will enjoy a bigger and more dynamic visual image
Using the shorter side of the roomyou will have a sharper and brighter image
How external light affects the visual image
When establishing a home theatre shutting out external light from
the back of the projector can help to produce a sharper and
brighter image.
If external light enters the room from the back of projector, the
screen reflects the external light and makes the image more difficult
to see. Therefore any external light from the back of projector
should be avoided.
There are several methods to install the screen. Even in cases where adequate wall surface is not available, some screen models are specially
designed so that it can be rolled out only when needed. In this way, daily life and the home theatre can co-exist in the same space.

3. Size of the screen
* Do not forget to consider the size and the position of speakers as well.
As the speakers are usually placed on both sides of the screen, speakers
size and position must be considered when determining which screen size
is to be used.
How to determine the screen size
The area of the room is the key factor determining the approximate screen size. Generally speaking, the width
of the screen shall be approximately 2/3 to 1/2 of the distance between viewer's position and the screen.80 inches

Screen Image Size
The projected image (WxH) is referred as the "Image Size". The screen size is mainly
classified into HDTV Type (16:9), Video Type (4:3) and the Cinemascope Type (2.35:1)
HDTV (16:9) Video (4:3)
* Screen Image Size does not include the Mask part.
* Screen Size may be tailored made up to the unit of 1-inch
Screen Mask Size
The Screen Image is surrounded by a darkly painted frame to absorb the light. This is called the Screen Mask. The size of Screen Mask varies in different models and
screen sizes. Part "U" in the above figure is referred to as "Upper Border". For example, in Ceiling Type screens, the Upper Border will be used to adjust the height of the
image size. The dimension of Screen Mask can be tailored to suit special purposes as well.
* The Screen Mask can be tailored made to the unit of 1-mm (some sketchable materials may be subjected to a different measurement)
* Tailor-made may not be possible for certain types of screen materials and models.

How to select the optimal type of screen materials
Different screen materials may have different effects on final images. At the same time, the position of projectors and the surrounding environments may need different types of screen materials to produce the best effects. Therefore, the projector position, viewer's position, and desired visual image etc. must be considered when choosing the screen materials.
4. Basic knowledge on the characteristics of screen materials
Diffusive Type (Pure-mat, White) Reflexive Type (Glass Beaded) Reflective Type (Pearl)
Even if the projector is suspended from the ceiling, or stands on floor/lower surface, a Diffusive Type produces bright and sharp images.
Reflexive Type returns light back to the same direction and therefore is suitable when projector stands on floor/lower surface.
Reflective Type reflects light in an opposite direction and therefore is well-suited when projectors are suspended from ceiling.
Diffusive Type gives the widest range of reflected light and therefore is suitable when there is large number of audience.
Reflexive Type gives a condensed range of reflected light, but enables a sharp and brighter image in a specified direction.
Reflective Type strikes a good balance between the reflection strength and range of reflected light.
Diffusive Type reflects the external light in a wide angle and is therefore more effective in reducing undesirable effects.
Reflexive Type reflects external light in the same angle and therefore is recommended when an external light enters the room from the opposite side to the viewer's position.
Reflective Type reflects external light in an opposite direction and therefore is recommended when an external light enters the room from the same side as the viewer's position.
The natural layering gives a soft and mild image. In particular, the Pure-Mat series excel in giving natural, bright and sharp images.
Sharp and focused image. A TV-like feeling and dynamic visual image.
A subdued contrast of light giving excellent flat images. Perfect spectrum of dark images.
Ideal in a dark room with a projector that has a strong power output to give the best performance.
When a projector stands on the floor or low surface there is no need to have a with strong power output.
Projector which is suspended from ceiling, and recommended to be used on surface with high degree of flatness.
Reflexibility
The Diffuse Type, Return Type and
Reflect Type each reflect a projected
light in different angles. Hence the
projector position is an important
factor in choosing the screen
materials.
Range of reflected light
Different screen materials have
different reflection characteristics
which affects the range of reflected
light (image visible range)
(some materials may not give the best
performances in certain projector
position and viewer's position)
Obstructing Light
If external light cannot be totally shut
out, the right kind of screen material
will help to give a better
performance of projected image.
Image Features
Screen materials produce different
image effects, users are advised to
experience this at the vendor's
showroom.
Viewing Environment
The characteristics of each screen
material will suit different theatre
environments.

Pure Mat [PAT.P] (Diffusive Type)
Pure Mat II plus (WF-202)
Pure-Mat is specially designed to effectively reflect the light in a dispersed and wide angle with spot-free equal brightness. Fibers are knitted in a random manner to give a smooth dispersion of light and this successfully minimises the interfering stripes visible under some fixed-output projectors. The dispersed light produces a wide reflected angle with a natural distribution of light.
The surface is an embossed process to reflect the incoming light to the widest possible angle in all directions and does not depend on the position of the projector. However, it requires a higher level of light-proof and a stronger output projector. It is especially good at producing harmonious, natural and soft images.

Because it features a randomly woven warp, this mat suppresses moire patterns and contributes to smoother diffusion. This high diffusive screen can reproduce the natural color tones of an image.
Following the superior features of Pure Mat II plus, "Pure Mat II EX" reflects the projector light to the max, and achieves the gain of 0.97 (at 3°) which is close to the ideal as a mat (diffusion type) screen. Use of finer fiber and tighter irregular knitting method, it's most suitable for the Full HD or 4K projection, with the excellent black depth and highest brilliance.
Pure-mat is a registered name by OS Screen.
A black coating gives an even better shield-out effect of strong light and provides excellent sharpness and contrast.

Screen Gain is a measurement of
reflexibility of screen material and is
an important indicator of the screen's
characteristics.
Theoretically, the brightness of a
standard white board (i.e.pure white
board coated with magnesium oxide)
is set as 1, and Screen Gain is the
degree of brightness compared to this
figure under the same environment.
Measurement of Screen GainTo project light at 90 degrees directly to the centre of the tested screen and measure image brightness at 5 degree interval from the right 60 degrees to left 60 degrees of the arc.

How to select the best screen
A perfect match of screen with the home theatre can be achieved by first determining both the installation and storage method.
The lifting and lowering of the screen can be
easily operated by a remote control. It
maintains the highest level of flatness among all
the rolled-up type screens.
The lifting and lowering of the screen can be
easily and smoothly operated with the
OS-developed Ball-stop and Soft-wind device
[PAT.]. Screen will return quietly and slowly, so
there is no worry of any damage caused by
over-powered impact.
The mainbody is placed on the floor, and the
screen can be pulled upwards easily. It is a
highly convenient portable type screen.
This type of screen is being fixed on the wall
and therefore always maintains an ideal flat
surface. It is recommended for professional
users

How to select the best 3D screen
When we see an object with one eye, shutting the other eye, the object can be
seen at different angle. 3D is an imaging technology which applies this
principle.
There are two types for 3D projection. OS developed the original screens best
matching to each method, to cope with the users' needs.
Two kinds of 3D methods
Passive method (polarization filter method)
Active method (liquid crystal shutter method)
15
Passive method (polarization filter method)
Active method (liquid crystal shutter method)
This is the method to use two projectors. Left eye and right eye images come from the different projectors and these images are received via the glasses with the polorization filter for each eye respectively.
It is a method that the projector projects the right eye image and the left eye image alternately at the high speed, and the synchronizing 3D glasses receive the left eye and the right eye images separately.
A passive method uses the polarized filter for a right and left lens of the 3D glasses. There are other methods, by the adjustment of the filter, but the basic principle is the same as follows:
There are also other types in the active method, but the basic principal is the same: the right and left eye images are alternately projected.
Two projectors are used to project the image for the right eye and for the left eye at the same time.
The images on the screen are doubled. With the polarized filter 3D glasses, the double image is perceived as left eye and right eye images, seen as the stereoscopic image.
There are cases, even if the 3D glasses are worn, the projected image looks doubled, as the left eye and right eye images are projected at the same time. This is the phenomenon called "crosstalk". The OS SD201 succeeded to reduce the crosstalk to the minimum 0.4%, beyond the perception of the human eyes (0% is the ideal value).
A projector shoots out 120 frames per second, and left and right images are alternately projected as one frame. The liquid crystal 3D glasses, synchronizing with the image signal, shut down the left eye when the right eye image is projected and vice versa.
With the high shutter speed, the image looks stereoscopic for the human eyes perception. As 3D images can be produced by one projector, most Home Theatre projectors use this method.
In selecting the screen for this method, any screen will do. However as the brightness decreases with the use of 3D glasses, the brighter, wider viewing angle and less hot spot screens are favored, which makes OS BU201 or BU202 the most ideal for this application.
Moreover, BU201 or BU202 are developed to obtain the best image for the living theatre in 2D as well.
