      it has been 1ashed up on the shore' At 6irst glance# it appears to be

      deserted' A barrel rolls back and 6orth as the boat is rocked by each

      successi7e 1a7e' 2e hear sirens approaching and the phalan0 o6 suad

      cars pulls up' Joining them no1 are &2@ AB*LA.CE-'

      PE.DER/A-& gets out along 1ith the others' All o6 the cops immediately

      co7er their 6aces# gagging 7iolently at the smell' Pendergast sni66s

      once and 6ro1ns' Apart 6rom this# he doesn5t react'

      Pendergast nods' &he cops all 6all back in re7ulsion' &hey 1atch 6rom

      a sa6e distance as Pendergast approaches the ghost ship' His shiny

      laced 1ing)tips sink in the sand' He leans do1n# pulls them o66 one at

      a time' He balls both socks# puts them care6ully into his shoes and

      proceeds bare6oot to1ards the boat'

      *sing a piece o6 dri6t1ood as a plank# Pendergast leans it against the

      -anta Lucia' 2ith surprising agility# he leaps up the plank to the
