deserted' A barrel rolls back and 6orth as the boat is rocked by each
successi7e 1a7e' 2e hear sirens approaching and the phalan0 o6 suad

PE.DER/A-& gets out along 1ith the others' All o6 the cops immediately
co7er their 6aces# gagging 7iolently at the smell' Pendergast sni66s
once and 6ro1ns' Apart 6rom this# he doesn5t react'
