Online and Blended Learning

Blended learning is learning that combines face-to-face classroom methods with computer-mediated activities.

There is no real consensus on a definition of blended learning.

The terms "blended," "hybrid," and"mixed-mode" are often used interchangeably in current research literature

The Flipped Classroom

The flipped classroom is a model of teaching in which a student's homework consists of the traditional lecture viewed outside of class as a vodcast or screencast.

Class time is spent on inquiry-based learning which would include what traditionally is viewed as a student's homework.

Why?

• A means to increase interaction and personalized contact time between students and teachers

• An environment where students take responsibility for their own learning

• A classroom where students who are absent due to illness or extra-curricular activities such as athletics or field-trips, don't get left behind

• A lesson where content is permanently archived for review or remediation

• A class where all students are engaged in their learning

• A place where all students can get a personalized education

There are a couple of free, web-based applications that can be used to create a screencast.

Screencast-o-Matic allows the use of a webcam. It also allows extended recording time up to 15 minutes.
