I normally don’t use the Scribe for medical updates, but since I sent an email a few weeks ago

asking you to help Brad Schmidt and his family, I felt compelled to do so, especially since I have

good news to share. The day I sent the email, it was not clear if Brad would make it. But then, his

condition improved and eventually he was able to return home. After sixty days in the hospital,

thirty of them in an induced coma, Brad’s recovery is expectedly slow. Having therapy is one

thing, but finding the patience to rest a lot and to progress in a slow pace is another challenge.

Brad didn’t know of our appeal to the community for help since he was unconscious at the time. When he learned

about it later on he was overwhelmed with joy and relief. More than anything, he said to me, was the feeling that he

was not alone, that people he never met truly cared about him and were willing to help. You should be very proud to

know that members of Temple Beth Am donated more than $10,000, offered help in many other ways and did not

    stop praying.

While almost everyone recognizes the benefit of good medical care and communal support of an ill person, the effect

of prayers on healing is more controversial. Yet, in recent years, scientists have been confirming in hundreds of

studies the significant power that prayers have on healing. Separate studies conducted at Duke, Dartmouth, and Yale

universities show that people who pray:

It seems like there is little doubt that people who pray for themselves benefit from doing so. But what about our

practice of the Mi Shebeirach, a healing prayer in which we pray not for ourselves but for others? Does it have any

    effect?

As I learned from Brad and many others who have been ill for prolonged periods of time - it definitely helps. I am not

sure how exactly it works. That’s when faith comes into the picture. What I do know is that knowing people care,

having people constantly think about you and wishing that you will get better, strengthen your spirit. And when your

spirit is strong, your emotions are intact and your overall attitude is optimistic.

    B’Shalom,

    Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

Tend to get sick less often.

Hospitalized people who never attended church have an average stay of three times longer than people who attended regularly. Heart patients were 14 times more likely to die following surgery if they did not participate in a religion. Elderly people who never or rarely attended church had a stroke rate double that of people who attended regularly. In Israel, religious people had a 40% lower death rate from cardiovascular disease and cancer than non-religious people.

    FROM THE PRESIDENT Hal Baseman

    Dear Temple Beth Am Community:

Personal travel update: Nothing bizarre happened to me during my

travels (up to this point) this month. Federal and international transportation

authorities are looking into this unusual situation and hope to issue a report

soon. Hopefully, it will contain something ridiculous that I can write about

    in May.

Temple update: We are three quarters of the way through the fiscal year. So far it’s been a pretty uneventful year.

Well, aside from initiating a new strategic plan and Kulanu effort fundamentally changing the way the Temple does

“business”, creation of a new approach to our musical offering and Bar/Bat Mitzvah training, implementation of an

innovative Skype Religious School curriculum, planning for facility improvement and expansion, the first true

voluntary (dues) financial commitment program in the county, and the successful branding program for The One

    School preschool.

All of these efforts have been implemented to make our synagogue an actively inclusive Jewish community. We have

worked to attract new members, keep existing members, engage all members, increase our volunteer base, create an

optimum physical environment for meeting challenges in the future, and select programs that best serve the

    congregation.

The Board Executive Committee has been meeting to help design an organization more suitable to this new paradigm.

This is not to say that our existing organization was not good. In fact, it is good. However, we recognize that some

changes can make it better matched to what we see as our level of operation in the future. To that end, an overall plan

has been developed to focus staff responsibilities and volunteer efforts on programming, engagement, and membership

    needs of the congregation.

The result is a reorganization, which includes the elimination of the position of Executive Director. As a consequence,

Carol Safran’s employment with the synagogue ended last month. I want to take this opportunity to thank Carol Safran

for her service to Temple Beth Am. For three and half years, Carol has been our Executive Director, helping to plan

and coordinate the behind the scenes work at the Temple. Carol has been nothing but professional and gracious in

response to this decision, maintaining a good relationship moving forward. I am certain you will join me in wishing

Carol only the best in all of her future endeavors. Thank you again, Carol.

Board update: At the March 24th BoD meeting, the 2014-2015 Temple budget was presented and approved. The

2014 Nominating Committee report for Directors and Officers was discussed and approved. Both will be sent out later

this month for Congregational review. The Director’s slate for 2014-2016 will then be voted on by the congregation at

the June 1st Annual meeting. Other matters discussed at the meeting included discussion on landscaping, well

installation, financial performance, and staff and volunteer organizational matters.

One last note: Director Howard Freedland has announced his intention to step down from the BoD this month.

Howard has been a very active member for seven and a half years, making him the most senior Director. I want to

thank Howard, who has been a good friend to me, the Temple Beth Am Board, and our congregation during his time on

the BoD. The good news is that he assures me that he will continue his tireless work for the Temple. To fill

Howard’s position, the BoD approved the appointment of Ellen Vargas at its March meeting. Welcome to the BoD,

    Ellen.

That’s it for now. As always, if you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] or

    (561) 676-3940.

    B’Shalom,

    Hal

    SECOND NIGHT PASSOVER SEDER

  • Temple Beth Am 6 April 2014

MEN’S CLUB Jerry Holinstat & Harvey Silverman, Co-Presidents

Well we certainly had a strange experience at last

week’s Men’s Club Meeting. It was scheduled to take

place as usual at the Square Grouper. Fortunately we

watched the weather reports (which called for light

rain showers) and made an afternoon decision to move

our meeting to Carmine’s Restaurant on Military

Trail. So we thought we had found a location of

shelter and safety to hold our meeting.

So guess again. Our light rain shower turned out to

produce seven (7) inches of a torrential downpour.

The rain seeped into the restaurant’s enclosed patio.

Our feet were soaked and resulted in one of our

members being unable to reach his home. Fortunately

David Elias welcomed him into his home for the

night. I suppose that Rabbi Alon (who was present)

and Noah now have floods in common. We laughed a

lot and made the best of the circumstances. What an

    experience!

Our congratulations to Heather Weisbrod, Temple Beth Am’s Youth Director, on her successful task of coordinating the

wonderful Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 9th. As well, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Men’s Club

Members for their hard work in purchasing, cooking, Bar-B-Qing and serving all of the food at the Purim Carnival. One day

I mentioned to John Marzina that it would be fun to have NYC Hot Dog carts. John couldn’t find any so he made his own.

John, the compliments that we received were outstanding!

Thank you to: John Marzina, David & Mary Elias, Len Zysman, Rich Remick and Charlie Levy.

The next Men’s Club Meeting will be on Wednesday, April 2nd at 6:30pm at the Square Grouper, weather permitting.

    Warmest regards,

    Jerry & Harvey

    SISTERHOOD SCOOP Lois Remick

First, a Happy and Healthy Passover to Temple Beth Am members and their families.

Second……..you “gotta” get to the Judaica Store! We are selling out fast, but there are still some great treasures

available…jewelry, tallit, books, Passover items and Chanukah items.

The best part is that we are giving 50% off original prices; some merchandise is 40% off and then there are the

    SPECIALLY PRICED ITEMS!!!

The Judaica Shop is officially closed as of June 30! Please remember to come into the shop before you leave for

the summer, or your summer vacation. We do not take credit cards, but we do “honor cash”!

We are open Sunday (when school is in session) from 11:00am-1:00pm; Tuesday (when school is in session)

from 4:30pm-6:30pm; and Friday...1/2 hour before Services. If you would like to shop, but cannot come at the

above hours, please call Karen Feller to make an appointment at 748-4240.

    ……Other important information:

Sisterhood members are invited to all meetings and we would especially like to have you join us at our planning

meetings this spring and summer. Meetings are on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00pm at TBA. (During

the summer, please check with Lois Remick at 627-7736, as to whether we are meeting at the Temple or at the

home of a member……..remember all are invited.)

Because we would appreciate knowing what type of activities our members and TBA members would like to

have Sisterhood sponsor, do not keep your ideas a “secret”! Share with your new Sisterhood Board Officers for

    the fiscal year 2014-2015:

    Facilitator/Membership: Maril Levy

    Treasurer: Debbie Schmidt

    Secretary: Sue Freedland

    Flower Fund: Judy Goldstein

    Scribe/Board Rep: Lois Remick

Yizkor Services are done 4 times a year: the last day of Passover, Shavuot, Yom Kippur and

Shemini Atzeret. This special Service is our way of remembering and praying for our departed

loved ones. The Yizkor prayers are only permitted to be recited in the presence of others, in a

community of other Jews. If you have loved ones who have passed away and you wish to say

Yizkor for them, then please join us on April 21st for this Service.

The last meeting for this season will take place on May 5th, 10:30am at Temple Beth Am. We will be

discussing The Jerusalem Maiden by Thalia Carner. The Jerusalem Maiden is a coming of age novel

exploring the role that religion, faith, and family have on one girl's hopes and dreams for her own

future. Esther struggles not only with what her family and culture expects but her own personal beliefs

in God and how they could bring so much heartache as well as joy. The author's rich details subtly place

the reader on the scene. The book is beautiful and will provide many opportunities for personal

reflection. Lunch at a restaurant will be after the meeting. We hope you will join us.

LETTER OF APPRECIATION TO OUR VOLUNTEERS

    FROM MORSELIFE

    Dear Mr. Baseman,

With sincere appreciation, thank you for once again bringing your Temple Beth Am volunteers to Morse Geriatric Center

on Christmas Day. The volunteers performed a wonderful mitzvah as they plated and served meals, escorted residents to

activities, and brought both friendship and love to our residents, clients and staff.

Erma Bombeck once said: “Volunteers…reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love

for one another.” Her description truly describes your Temple Beth Am Christmas Day volunteers and we are so grateful.

Thank you again for the warmth that your volunteers so generously provided on Christmas Day.

    CEMETERY PLOTS MEMORIAL PLAQUES

Did you know that as a benefit of Temple

membership, you can purchase cemetery plots for

yourself and your family at a significantly

discounted price? Temple Beth Am has reserved a

limited number of cemetery plots in the Garden of

Abraham section at the Star of David Cemetery and

Funeral Chapel of the Palm Beaches (formerly

    known as Menorah Gardens).

The price of a plot purchased from Temple Beth

Am is $1,500. If you went directly to the Star of

David, the price to purchase a plot is $2,995.

Please note that this price is for a plot only. You

will need to see a funeral director for information

    for additional services and charges.

Remember, the number of plots is limited so if

you wish to take advantage of this benefit and

purchase a plot, please contact Margot in the

Temple office at 561-747-1109 and she will gladly

    help you.

How can you honor your deceased

    loved one?

By placing your loved one’s name on the Memorial

    Board in the Sanctuary.

When you do this, a light on their plaque will be lit

on their Yahrzeit (anniversary of their death) and

their name will be read from the Bimah.

Their light will also be lit on Yom Kippur and their

name will always be included in the Yizkor Book

    during the High Holy Days.

Even when you are gone, your loved one will not be

    forgotten. Plaques are $500.

Call the Temple at 747-1109 to place your order.
