This is a perfect opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has made this production of ‘Aladdin’ possible. Everyone works really hard for months before with the organisation required to run the show – as well as the cast there is a regular army of volunteers sorting out auditions, rehearsal, scenery, lighting, sound, music, refreshments, costumes, tickets – the list is endless as is the patience of the committee! But most of all, my thanks to all of you for continuing to support TAODS over our many years of existence. Now, sit back, forget the fantasy of 2014 Britain and concentrate on the reality of pantomime!

Mike Shail

For over 70 years, Totnes Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society (TAODS) have been bringing you plays, pantomimes, musicals and variety shows. Over the years we have preformed in a large variety of local venues before the Civic Hall became our home! The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), found-ed in 1899, is the main representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. It has a membership of 2500 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, stag-ing musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantos in a wide variety of performing venues raging from country’s leading professional theatres to village halls.

Well it’s that time of year again (oh yes it is!)

Welcome to this year’s offering of Aladdin and his wonderful lamp. I was delighted to be asked once again to direct and choreograph this year’s pantomime. This is the third time I have been involved in this pantomime with the society, having played the princess the first time and directed and choreographed the last.

Once again I have not been disappointed. There have been the usual highs and lows but as ever the society’s committee worked tirelessly and everyone has pulled together to get the show before you to its usual high standard.

Huge thanks to the young, talented cast for working so hard. The usual lack of male participants has meant casting in a somewhat unusual way and has even led to yours truly having to tread the boards again (sorry, I really did try everything!). Particular thanks to the committee and backstage crew without whose magic we wouldn’t have a show. Finally huge thanks to you the audience for coming. In a world of iPads, XBoxes, Wiis , Ds and all the other technological entertainment at our fingertips our art is struggling and it is only with your support that we will be able to continue putting on shows like this for your enjoyment. So if you enjoy yourself this evening please do not hesitate to tell your friends and family to come along and support us so we are able to continue to provide this wonderful form of live entertainment .

Now hold on tight as we whisk you away on a magical carpet ride to far Peking and don’t forget to boo the baddies, cheer the goodies and be on the lookout for a pesky Panda!
