St. John’s United Methodist Church April 2015

Easter is a wonderful season to invite someone to church, and I encourage each of you to do your best to share Jesus with someone this season. For many folks, Easter and Christmas are the only days they go to church, so it's very important to invite people to Easter services which will be held on Sunday morning April 5 at both 9:00 and 11:00 at St. John's and 9:00 at the St. John's Chapel.

May I ask you to try something this spring? Make an effort to invite folks you know, but don't reach out to very often, if they'd like to attend Easter service. Ask your co-workers, neighbors, friends, anyone you meet and I promise you'll find some folks who are just looking for a place to worship on Easter Sunday.

This Easter once again we will be reminded how Jesus died and rose again! He died for us - to bring us into fellowship with God. He rose from the dead

and now lives forever within the hearts of all Christians.

To explain how we know? Not easy! Because it is an experience; the Bible says, "O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalm 34:8"

When we encourage others to invite Jesus into their hearts they begin life anew. What a glorious new beginning; it is like springtime.

So put your trust in Jesus and take refuge in Him! Tell others about Jesus. "He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way. He lives! He lives! Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives. He lives within my heart." Grace and Peace, Pastor Rich

A Note from Pastor Rich Rev. Rich Evans

In the hymn "Fairest Lord Jesus" the second verse says "Fair are the meadows, fairer still

the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring: Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer who makes the woeful heart to sing".

With the winter weather behind us, I find myself yearning for the garb of spring this year more than ever. Now that the days are longer and it is becoming warmer outside, I long to see the daffodils, crocus and forsythia in bloom. I love the signs of new and renewed life.

As we soon complete the Lenten season where we immersed ourselves in much spiritual reflection, we as a faith community now prepare to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Many thanks go out to everyone who supported our Chicken and Dumpling dinner: to all who came to eat, to the wives who graciously provided desserts, to the men who gave of their time and effort, to Bob Freeborn for his countless hours of care, to Suzanne Black for helping with the

tickets and placemats, to Brad Baynum from Pizza King for helping with the food order. Thank you to one and all for making our dinner a success. A special thank you to Ginger Trader for donating the chicken to us as she has for the past several years.

We now move ahead to prepare for the Pig-in-a-Poke project to support the Heifer program in Appalachia.

In a unanimous vote at our last meeting, we have taken on the responsibility of kitchen supervision when used by outside caterers.

Pastor Barb’s Perspective Rev. Barbara Wilson

During one of our February/March snow storms I stood looking at an immobilized Dogwood tree just outside my door. Every limb had been attacked by winter’s cold, unchallenged breath. The tree’s branches were encased in ice defying movement.

If one can feel sorrow for a tree, I felt it. To be so vulnerable, subject to the whim of a strong wind that could tear those limbs and branches and dash them to the ground; to have to become so exposed and stripped of all modesty is cause for sorrow.

It occurred to me that this was a picture of our Lord’s experience on the cross.

Listen to Isaiah’s message:

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering...He was pierced for our transgressions... crushed for our inequities...[Isaiah 53: 2-3,5]

Jesus was immobilized on Friday’s cross, “exposed and stripped of all modesty”, as was my tree. It appeared that life ended there; but something happened: He lived again!

As I gazed at my pitiful Dogwood tree, I saw that something was also happening: tiny buds dotted its branches; to be sure they were held

captive by ice; however, each one was also protected by a covering that made new life possible!

Life was happening even when I couldn’t see it happening! God was making a way when it appeared that there was no way-just as He did that Friday on Calvary’s hillside.

We must never give way to circumstances that would wrongly teach us to believe otherwise. Lent and Easter remind us of this truth: so love it, live it, and teach it in any way you can to all who are needing to have life in abundance!

That’s my perspective; what’s yours?

In His name,

Pastor Barbara

ATTENTION ALL SENIOR COUPLES

This year St. John’s would like to offer a sacred, yet fun, opportunity to reaffirm one’s marriage vows in a Wedding Ceremony of Reaffirmation to be held on June 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. John’s main campus, 300 North Pine Street, Seaford, Delaware. Co-officiated by Rev. Barbara Wilson and Rev. Rich Evans this unique vow renewal promises to be a time of beauty and joy.

As with many wedding ceremonies a reception is often held directly following the wedding service. This too will be the case on June 13 where light refreshments, picture opportunities and shared fellowship will take place directly following the ceremony.

The church is seeking senior participants 50 years of age or over to be part of this sacramental time of renewal and reaffirmation.

We realize you may have questions. Here are a few answers in anticipation of a few questions you may have. Guys, no rings need to be purchased. Gals you don’t need to fit into your original wedding dress. In fact, how you dress is up to you. More importantly, how your husband dresses is also up to you. Invitations to your special guests will also be encouraged to bear witness to your renewal moment.

Happy April! We are having so much fun at St. John’s Preschool and the end of the school year is coming too quickly! I can remember so vividly the very first days of school. It seems like yesterday. This month will be filled with watching butterflies and ladybugs go through their life cycles, watching flowers bloom, and enjoying fun spring field trips, as we enjoy all spring has to offer. I know we will be blessed with a truly glorious season.

Registration for the 2015-2016 preschool year is going very well! We still have spots left in most of our programs, but they are limited. If you know of any child between the ages of two and five that would like to be a part of the St. John’s Preschool family, please tell

them to call the preschool office (629-2289) and learn all about our wonderful preschool program!

This month we will have a Scholastic Book Fair, which will run from April 20 to April 24. Please stop by and shop if you love books! We will also have a Fisher’s Popcorn Fundraiser, which will begin on April 13. If you want a taste of summer, consider ordering some popcorn! It will be delivered the first week of May!

There is a Paint Night scheduled on Monday, April 13th, to benefit Brayden Houston. The event will be held at the Seaford Moose and will begin at 6:30. For more information…stop by the preschool office. Please continue to pray for Brayden!

Our end of the year festival is coming up! It is scheduled for Thursday, May 22nd! We have many exciting activities planned to celebrate the end of the school year. Anyone wishing to join us and watch the children celebrate a great school year is welcome. We always can use a helping hand! The festival takes place between the hours of 10:00 am and 12:00 noon.

We would like to thank St. John’s United Methodist Church for allowing us to be such an important ministry as we set out to help mold the lives of God’s children. Please continue to pray for our students, preschool families, and staff.

We would like to extend our best wishes for a wonderful April and very super spring!

Please continue to keep our service men and women in your prayers.

We send out notes of encouragement to our deployed military and occasionally hear back from them. I received a thank you note from 151 Lt Taylor Paul. He is serving in the US Marine Corp in the Middle East. He noted that he is working in a

behind the scenes capacity and appreciates our notes and prayers. Taylor stated in his note that: "God is good and He provides support to me out here through our Chaplain and church group as well as notes from Believers like you. Thank you!" Taylor will be ending his

CHALLENGE. Beginning January 5, 2015, the community was challenged to donate one non-perishable food item each week for the Food Closet through April 12—15 weeks. The Seaford High School has already made one delivery! Thanks so much to all who are making this commitment to help others in need. Keep up the good work!

COLD…COLD…COLD! Imagine how you would feel if you had to decide if you were going to pay your oil bill or buy food for your family! Heavy decisions, but there are many in our community making such decisions. But, the Seaford Community Food Closet is helping many with these decisions. In January, the closet volunteers served 74

families (173 people; 52 were children). The closet was open 15 days during January. This means that approximately 5 families were served each day the closet was open. Needless to say, the volunteers were very busy. In January, $2,133.85 was spent on food.

Light It Up Blue Ceremony Wednesday April 1, 2015, 6:30 p.m. at Gateway Park, Seaford, DE

The month of April is Autism Awareness month. We support Autism Speaks by "Lighting It Up Blue." This campaign is designed to color the world blue in an effort to increase awareness of the challenges faced by people with autism. Awareness is the key to funding research for a cure and helping develop treatments that provide opportunities for people with autism to thrive in this world. Even more importantly, awareness leads to acceptance of people with

autism, and their differences, by others. Given that one in 68 children are now being diagnosed with autism, just imagine how many community members have children, family members, or close friends that are affected!

Our Delaware "Light It Up Blue" committee is successful in lighting up schools, University of Delaware, Legislative Hall, Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, City of Seaford, The Greater Seaford Chamber of Commerce, Seaford School District, Gallery 107, St. John's United Methodist Church, Soroptimist Your Sister's Closet, Nanticoke

Trustees The Trustees met on Monday, March 16 after having missed the February meeting due to inclement weather, so there were many important topics on the agenda.

Trustee expenses for St. John’s church, parsonage

and thrift shop – as well as St. John’s Chapel and parsonage at Cannon – are favorable to budget after eight months of the fiscal year.

Some of the issues raised at the January meeting by Allan Messick and Gordon Hearn of St. John’s Chapel at Cannon have been resolved: The front door lock was changed to a turn knob on the inside due to safety concerns of having to use a key to unlock the door from inside. Glass inserts for the interior doors have been ordered and received. DelDOT was consulted about standing water at the front of the building. An offer was made by a contractor to lay crusher run in the area, and the Trustees will follow up on that offer. Work is still pending on cleaning rain gutters, touching up peeling paint on the sanctuary ceiling, and lights on the sign. Delmarva Power has not responded to fix the

security light.

Communication continues to be improved between the Vision Team at Cannon and the Liaison Representatives for the Trustees. Pastor Rich will ask Pastor Messick to post a schedule of the Vision Team meetings.

The current tenant of the Cannon parsonage has been transferred and will vacate the premises by April 30. A new tenant will take occupancy as of May 1.

The accepted bid for the restroom renovation has come in $20,000 over anticipated cost. Several fundraising ideas will be presented to the Finance Committee on April 13. After presentation to the Finance Committee, plans and details for the restroom renovations will be presented to the congregation at a special church conference held in May.

The Trustees 2015-2016 budget for St. John’s Church comes in at just $1,500 over the current budget. Dave Tull recommended allocating an additional $10,000 in the replacement/equipment failure fund of the money market account for anticipated major expenditures, such as replacement of the lawn tractor, storage shed, lever handles for all interior doors

and the addition of stair lifts. The Finance Committee will be presented with a proposed budget increase of $15,000 for Cannon to cover a new furnace and repairs to the handicap ramp for the church and new windows for the parsonage.

The Light of Christ has been installed, and a plaque will be hung in the Narthex dedicating the light to Rev. John O. Price for 39 years of ministry in the Baltimore-Washington Conference. The date of the dedication service will be announced.

The Methodist Men continue to monitor the use of the kitchen by outside groups. The rental policy will be rewritten in the near future, and the food service permit has been renewed.

Finally, Carlyle Windley announced that April is Autism Awareness month and invited everyone to attend the April 1 ceremony in Gateway Park at 6:30 p.m.

The Board of Trustees meets on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Coke Lounge. The members are: David Tull, Chairperson, Harold Damaska, Rosemary Everton, Jay Milligan, Doug Simpson, Rick Stewart, Mary Welch, Joanne Whalon, Tom Wimbrow and Carlyle Windley.

In 2014, I requested that the Administrative Council allow me to apply for grant funding to be used specifically for the congregational redevelopment of the former Cannon United Methodist Church. The Cannon properties had sat empty for over two years under St. John’s oversight. After an extensive demographic study and of almost a year of prayer and discussion with former members of Cannon, various Conference officials in addition to the insights and assistance of the Chapel Vision Team, Trustees, SPPRC, Finance and Administrative Council, I was charged to lead a Mission Plan and Grant Request which was submitted to the Congregational Development Corporation in the hopes of securing resources for a re-development launch. In November of 2014, a completed Mission Plan and Grant Request was submitted along with the recommendation and blessing from the Dover District Superintendent, Dr. Vicki Gordy Stith. In December, Donny Dickerson, St. John’s Finance Chair, Pastor Allen Messick and I served as the delegation to represent St. John’s in our request to a panel of twenty- five persons made of the members of the Bishop’s Cabinet, Senior Clergy and laity. The Congregational Development Corporation affirmed our presentation and grant request of the new mission model which creates one church in two locations.

In January of 2015, I was notified that St. John’s had been selected to receive a grant award from the Congregational Development Corporation of the Peninsula Delaware Conference of the United Methodist Church. The award was granted to fund our re-develop missional efforts of the former Cannon United Methodist Church. The grant awarded was offered with the specific use to help launch St. John’s Chapel in its early years. As missional extension of our Seaford campus, St. John’s Chapel was funded to outreach to persons not currently being served by St. John’s in Seaford through a different preaching and worship setting different from the main campus in Seaford.

The amount of the total awarded grant was $75,000.00 to be allocated over the first three years of the Chapel’s outreach efforts. The Grant breakdown is as follows…

$ 35,000.00 in 2015.

$ 25,000.00 in 2016.

$ 15,000.00 in 2017.

Moreover, each grant award will carry certain benchmarks that I as Senior Pastor will be tasked in monitoring along with the Chapel Campus Minister, Pastor Allen Messick.

I have provided a detailed breakdown as to how our church must invest the grant. Each year the grant is to be fully invested and failure to do so may seriously jeopardize further annual awards.

2015 $ 35,000.00 Congregational Development Grant Usage

$15,000.00 Marketing Advertising This grant portion has been awarded to work with a media marketing firm called FaithHighway. Since 1991, over 10,000 churches have effectively used FaithHighway’s church multi- media experts to create awareness of local churches like St. John’s and St. John’s Chapel. It reported that 85% of the churches who utilize FaithHighway church commercials showed measurable growth within the first six months of use. Our marketing mix will include Network Television Commercials targeted to the greater Seaford and broader demographic, along with targeted mailers to mail carrier routes in and around Seaford /Bridgeville area.

$ 10,000.00 Compensation

This grant portion has been awarded to help offset the campus minister’s annual compensation

$ 5,000.00 Local Missional Outreach

This portion of the grant funding will be used to draw and attract others the Chapel for a taste of its worship and culture. An example of a Taste and See event for the Chapel could be anything from having a kite flying day where each child is given a kite to fly and parishioners greet them and an information card provided to discover if they have a local

Congregational Development Grant (continued)

church and allow the Chapel to connect face to face with both Christian and Pre-Christian neighbors.

Moreover, St. John’s Chapel will uses these funds to help people get to know one another as an extension of the St. John’s faith community is developed. It may be for special worship events at the Chapel designed to draw others into its doors. Or it might just use a portion of this funding to buy ice-cream for people at the Dairy Queen and hand out a brochure of St. John’s Chapel at Cannon. One example of a Taste and See event was a local church hiring a top named local Christian Band and giving out free tickets. At the end of the concert, four people accepted Jesus in their hearts. It was very expensive but thanks to a CDC grant the local church was blessed that we were selected to invest this money into kingdom building as four young people came to accept Christ through that event. Similarly, St. John’s Chapel is in a position to express the extravagant generosity of the United Methodist Church to

our own community.

$ 5,000.00 Clergy Discretionary

St. John’s currently has a small fund which people from time to time help fund a vast number of areas. Mostly used for parishioners and persons which we have direct ministry engagement with St. John’s, the clergy discretionary fund assists with generally small areas of benevolence. Such examples are counseling assistance generally and initial session, and emergency assistance when referred from Love, Inc. The discretionary fund has bought clothing, and provided emergency housing when shelters were full or unavailable. It has assisted in medical, dental assistance and when parishioners encounter hardship. It has helped victims of fire, assisted in funeral costs, and transportation needs. The amounts are rarely enough cover but do provide meaningful ministry assistance in difficult times.

2016 $ 25,000.00 Congregational Development Grant Usage

$ 10,000.00 this grant portion

has been awarded to help offset St. John’s Chapel’s campus minister annual compensation.

$ 10,000.00 Continued Marketing and Awareness of St. John’s Chapel.

$ 5,000.00 Local and Missional Outreach Needs.

2017 $ 15,000.00 Congregational Development Grant Usage

$ 10,000.00 this grant portion has been awarded to help offset St. John’s Chapel’s campus minister annual compensation.

$ 5,000.00 Local and Missional Outreach Needs.

All grants received are just that, grants. They are not loans; they create no fiscal exposure or debt to St. John’s UMC. St. John’s has been selected for the Congregational Development Grant in part due to our creative missional approach in utilizing unused property resources to reach others for Christ.

In the unlikely event the missional or congregational re-development is deemed completed or closes, the St. John’s Trustees will initiate the sale of the former Cannon UMC and the proceeds of any sale will restore the Congregational Development Corporation from where the grants came so that another re-development project might benefit. Any and all future sale of the former Cannon properties would proceeds in accordance with The United

Methodist Book of Discipline.

When or if ever the time comes that the St. John’s Chapel mission closes and St. John’s Church markets the properties under the direction of the UMC Book of Discipline, proceeds from the sale would be used for capital usage after any grants were reimbursed to the Congregational Development Corporation, (CDC) so that other missional development or re-development projects might too benefit. In other words should missional efforts cease at the former Cannon church properties, any proceeds received from a real-estate sale would be gifted back to the Congregational Development Corporation not to exceeding the sum total of any received grant amounts? The spirit of such arrangement is covenantal in nature in our connectional life together as United Methodists. Once again let me reiterate the $75,000.00 grant was awarded given for specific use; it is not a loan. It is not a signature note, engages no indebtedness, but provides effective biblical stewardship for what was an empty church that once again has public worship and ministry. If you have questions or wish to learn more about St. John’s Chapel at Cannon. Feel free to contact me. Pastor Allen Mesick and I would be quite happy to meet with you to celebrate what God is doing through our mission church, St John’s Chapel at Cannon.
