The decorations on our stone staircase have become a holiday tradition over the past six years, praised for their simplicity and elegance by the Yale Alumni

Magazine and The Yale Herald. As you can see in the images below the staircase itself is in need of repair.

Spalling repairs to the front of the staircase and elsewhere did not successfully match the Hall’s sand-stone. These need to be replaced or tinted to eliminate the patchwork appearance.

An example of spalling, which occurs when water gets into the stone through small cracks and then delaminates the stone during freeze/thaw cycles.

Spalling on the bluestone steps constituted a trip hazard and so was repaired by chipping and honing this past summer.

The red adobe grout is deliber-ately softer than the sandstone masonry so that it, and not the sandstone, will crack as the masonry moves and expands with temperature changes. Moss and small plants growing in the grout indicate that repointing is overdue on the front staircase.

Old repairs on the interior edges of the staircase wall and elsewhere did not match the original masonry and were not keyed in properly. These must be redone.

When these Annabelle hydrangeas are in bloom, our staircase is the most photo-graphed spot on campus. We ask for your help to insure that the Hall’s masonry is sound and rewards closer inspection.
