What is “3-D” Art?
• 2-dimensional art – flat, has no actual depth or space

• 3-dimensional art – is something you can move around, it has actual depth and space

There are 3 kinds of sculpture…

2. Subtractive
3. Additive
What do they mean? …
Relief Sculpture
• Relief [Sculpture] is (from Italian relievare, “to raise”), in sculpture, any work in which the figures project from a supporting background, usually a plane surface
Subtractive Sculpture
• Subtractive Sculpture refers to sculpting method produced by removing or taking away from the original material; carving is a widely used method
Additive Sculpture
• Additive Sculpture: Sculptural form produced by combining or building up material from a core or armature.

• Inspired by Dada Art (Artist to know: Marcel Duchamp)
– Find 2 objects that you can turn intoa sculpture
– You will attach these two objects in some way to make a new sculpture!
TODAY: Brainstorm – list potential items and draw 10 sketches of these items combined in some way, include ideas of how you might attach them
* Object Ideas: old broken toys, school supplies, empty bottles, old shoes, etc.
Sculpture Competition
• Tomorrow bring a plastic grocery bag filled with disposable items (unbreakable, no glass) from home. Items like… – empty boxes (dry food boxes, tissue boxes, diaper boxes, anything)
– paper towel / bathroom tissue tubes
– straws, popsicle sticks, toothpicks
– empty food cans or plastic jars
– disposable cups, forks, spoons, etc.
– ANYTHING! CHECK YOUR RECYCLING BOXES!
• If you have tape, bring that too!
THE MORE YOU BRING THE BETTER! WE ARE HAVING A SCULPTURE CONTEST!!!

• I will split you into groups.
• Build a sculpture using your materials from home – construct the tallest structure you can before time is called.
• When time is called, the tallest sculpture will win!
SCULPTURES MUST STAND INDEPENDENTLY!!! Check this as you go!
