The Value of one Member

Ten little members standing in a line. One disliked the leader, then there were nine.

Nine ambitious members offered to work late. One forgot the promise, then there were eight. Eight creative members had ideas good as heaven. One lost enthusiasm, then there were seven.

Seven loyal members got into a fix. They quarreled over a project, then there were six.

Six members remained with spirit and drive. One moved away, then there were five.

Five steadfast members wished there were more. One became indifferent, then there were four.

Four eager members needing help issued a plea. One began to see only the negative, then there were three.

Three lonely members began to feel so blue. One joined another club, then there were two.

Two overwhelmed members, our rhyme is nearly done. One decided it was no longer fun, then there was one.

One still determined member in search of a crew, met with a neighbor, then there were two.

Two earnest members each enrolled one more, doubling their number, then there were four.

Four dedicated members just wouldn't wait, so each enrolled another, then there were eight.

Eight excited members signed up sixteen more. In another six verses, there will be a thousand twenty-four!

PLANK PROGRAM– by Don Myers

Several members took me up on my request regarding an area of confusion about our PLANK PROGRAM. These inquiries all focused on the time limit to pay off a pledge in addition to some other questions I'll discuss: The cut off date for pay-ing off any pledge category is 10 NOVEMBER 2011. (We have THREE YEARS from 10 November 2008 to have $35,000 in hand to pay off the VFW for the English Avenue building that we are now in.) We have rehabilitated this property at a cost of about $30,000. There remains several items yet to be done but we are gaining on the process of putting our house in good repair.

The committee that is working the Plank program IS NOT GOING TO HOUND YOU about payments.

Another question has to do with category. Let's say you paid off the $500 level that's called BURMA TEAK. And now you've decided to pledge another $500 and its paid off. Will you be eligible to go up to the $1,000 level of INDO-CHINA TEAK Plank Owner? Yes, and you will get another certificate to prove that fact in addi-tion to another brass name plate honoring your new category. (We have a member living in Texas that is about ready to reach this goal just mentioned.)

NEW INCENTIVE: Beginning 1 June 2009, anyone starting a new pledge of $25 or more with receive our brand new Marine Barracks Indianapolis PATCH, suit-able for a jacket, cap or other apparel. The same deal goes out to those other pledge folks that are working on their category. Send in a $25 payment and we'll send one of our patches to you also. (Look in this newsletter what the patch looks like. Now get this, any one paying off a plank category in the next 90 days will get ONE FULL YEAR OF MEMBERSHIP along with the other benefits. Semper Fi Don Myers ( call me at 786-4649 if you have questions)

A "plank owner" (or plankowner) is an individual who was a member of the crew of a ship when that ship was placed in commission. Originally, this term applied only to crew members that were present at the ship's first commissioning. Today, however, plank owner is often applied to members of newly commissioned units, new military bases and recommissioning crews as well.

FROM Don Myers– True Story

Look carefully at the B-17 and note how shot up it is - one engine dead, tail, horizontal sta-bilizer and nose shot up.. It was ready to fall out of the sky.. (This is a painting done by an artist from the description of both pilots many years later.) Then realize that there is a Ger-man ME-109 fighter flying next to it. Now read the story below. I think you'll be surprised.....

Charlie Brown was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 379th Bomber Group at Kimbolton , England . His B-17 was called 'Ye Old Pub' and was in a terrible state, having been hit by flak and fighters. The compass was damaged and they were flying deeper over enemy terri-tory instead of heading home to Kimbolton.

After flying the B-17 over an enemy airfield, a German pilot named Franz Steigler was or-dered to take off and shoot down the B-17. When he got near the B-17, he could not believe his eyes. In his words, he 'had never seen a plane in such a bad state'. The tail and rear section was severely damaged, and the tail gunner wounded. The top gunner was all over the top of the fuselage. The nose was smashed and there were holes everywhere. Despite having ammunition, Franz flew to the side of the B-17 and looked at Charlie Brown, the pilot. Brown was scared and struggling to control his damaged and blood-stained plane. BF-109 pilot Franz Stigler B-17 pilot Charlie Brown..

12

Aware that they had no idea where they were going, Franz waved at Charlie to turn 180 degrees. Franz escorted and guided the stricken plane to, and slightly over, the North Sea towards England . He then saluted Charlie Brown and turned away, back to Europe . When Franz landed he told the CO that the plane had been shot down over the sea, and never told the truth to anybody. Charlie Brown and the remains of his crew told all at their briefing, but were ordered never to talk about it.

More than 40 years later, Charlie Brown wanted to find the Luftwaffe pilot who saved the crew. After years of research, Franz was found. He had never talked about the incident, not even at post-war reunions. They met in the USA at a 379th Bomber Group reunion, together with 25 people who are alive now - all because Franz never fired his guns that day. (L-R) German Ace Franz Stigler, artist Ernie Boyett, and B-17 pilot Charlie Brown.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! (Makes me happy that I wasn't a total blood-thirsty warrior) Semper Fi Don Myers

June 1, 2009 Greetings Marine Corps League Scuttlebutt Reader,

The Marine Corps League is cutting costs by going GREEN! As you know, the detachment has entered into a lease-to-own agreement for a building that is going to require a lump sum payment of $35,000 in 2 ½ years. In the meantime, the detachment must also pay for utilities, insurance, maintenance, and other enhancements to keep building up to code. In an attempt to reduce some of our monthly expenses, we are considering going electronic with the Scuttlebutt newsletter. The printed Scuttlebutt is the League’s one and only means of communicating with all members on a regular basis. Each month (with exceptions to June and December), approximately 350 issues of the Scuttlebutt are printed and mailed at a cost to the Detachment of approximately $1 per newsletter. Our Booster donations and ads are not covering the cost of printing & mailing the newsletter, which is running approximately $3,500 per year. You may think that your membership fee covers these costs, but the detachment only makes $7 on new members and $2 on renewals, and most of that money goes toward the programs and charities that the detachment supports.

Proposal

1. The detachment will print and mail the Scuttlebutt on a quarterly basis in order to save $3150+ over the next 3 years – that’s 10% of what is needed to purchase our building!! Quarterly Issues will be mailed in January, April, July, and October. 2. Members who prefer to have the Scuttlebutt mailed to them each month will pay $12 per year to cover printing and postage expenses. 3. Monthly Issues will be emailed to members and non-members all over world for free. If you want to receive the Scuttlebutt via email each month, please send us your email address (see attached form). Your email address will NOT be shared with any organization outside the Hiram I. Bearss Detachment of the Marine Corps League.

This is your opportunity to help us succeed AND to support an organization dedicated to

community service and enhancing the lives of veterans and veterans’ families that live in your neighborhood.
