ARCHIVESAnother Scarab Resurrected!

Harry Julian Carew's work surfaced recently when VicePresident Irene Will was given five magnificent linoblocks that may date back to the 1930's by a friend ofhers who knew she was a Scarab and printmaker. Howdid this transition take place? Several years agoCarew's wife, who was then in her 90's, gave them toIrene's friend who in turn gave them to Irene.

Who was Carew? Obviously a printmaker, also a Scarabwho joined in June 1935, left in April 1936, joinedagain in June 1958 and finally left in September 1959.On his applications he listed his hobby asphotography, his occupation as an interior decorator, and rendering of ornament, designing, and interiorperspective sketches as the nature of his work. Hestudied at the Wicker School of Art under John P.Wicker.

What's the scoop? Irene made color prints of thelinocuts and brought them to the Board of Directorsmeeting on March 21. They were beautiful prints oflandscapes and figures. She thought that more printscould be made to be used as a fundraiser. What agreat idea! A Scarab who still contributes financialsupport from the world beyond. Thanks Carew! ThanksIrene for acquiring, printing, and sharing his work!

On Soiree Musicales; The principle of our Soirees, unlike our concerts, are forprofessional musicians to meet and perform in an informal setting. The musicians read some pieces they have practiced individuallybut never rehearsed before, they present the pieces they wouldlike to play. Most of the time they read some unusual pieces orsome pieces rarely performed in public. One may come acrossthe music of a noted composer and are taken in by it. It may havethe score for a quartet (music with all the parts together,) but norecording. An effort is made to get the recording so that they canlisten to the piece prior to the meeting. The musicians are excitedover new discoveries and welcome new talents to perform.Music lovers enjoy sitting by the fireplace in the historic ScarabClubs Great Room amidst the famous beams and the visual artworks of its members on the walls. They support this endeavor bybringing a dish or some bread and wine and a fee of $7.
