    SDC/SPDC Introduction

    1 About SDC/SPDC

SDC meansStudent Design Competitionand SPDCStudent Professional Development Conference. The ASME (Amer-ican Society of Mechanical Engineers) always organises these two events jointly, since they share the same context.A SDC/SPDC is organised each year in a country/region of the district, and lasts two to three days, depending onthe opened contests and the number of attendees. The attendees are ASME student members, coming from severalcountries of the district to compete in one or more contests, depending on the rules, out of the four proposed by theevent (see2) :

Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition : the contestants present one by one, during fifteen (15) minutesand in front of a jury, their work related to the engineering sphere (e.g. study of a mechanical system, ofnew renewable-energie systems, etc.). Then, the jury questions the candidate about his presentation during fiveminutes. Once all candidates have presented their project, the jury members decide in session about the ranking.

Old Guard Technical Poster Competition : the participants submit a poster they have created, that reflectstheir ability to communicate about an engineering topic.

Old Guard Technical Webpage Competition : like in the previous contest, the participants submit a webpagethey have created, that reflects their ability to communicate about an engineering topic.

Student Design Competition : the ASME Student Design Competition provides a platform for ASME StudentMembers to present their solutions to a range of design problems, from everyday household tasks to ground-breaking space exploration. Each team is required to design, construct and operate a prototype that meets the

requirements of an annually determined problem statement.

    Purpose of the contest

An engineer, like all professionals, must possess a well-developed ability to communicate, both orally and in writing. This competition is designed to emphasize the value of an ability to deliver oral presentations.

The topic is to be related to a technical, economic, or environmental aspect of engineering or any other basic engi-neering theme, provided it pertains to some sphere in which an engineer is or should be involved. Furthermore, acompetitor may utilize any available resource but must realize that the presentation is to be an individual effort.Assistance in the use of visual aids is advisable. Good practice and courtesy suggests credit be given during thepresentation for any outside help related to the reported project. Each presentation shall be made by one competitor.Individual Student Member shall first compete at local District Student Professional Development Conferences. Theconference winners are then sent to compete at the Society level, which takes place every year at Congress.

The Presentations duration is fifteen (15) minutes plus five (5) minutes for questions and answers immediatelythereafter. Any time remaining or runovers of the fifteen minutes must be added to or subtracted from the five minutediscussion. Questions are limited to the Student Members at the Conference, except those Student Members from thecompetitors own Student Section.

    Judging and awards

The Presentations will be judged in four categories; Content, Organization, Delivery and Effectiveness, and Discussion:

Content : To what extent is the subject of interest to a technical audience? Is credit given for source of material orcontribution by others? How much knowledge of subject was exhibited? Is work independent and original? Isthe subject technical or general in nature?

Organization : Is there any novel approach to the subject? Is there sufficient background information provided inorder to introduce the audience to the subject? Are the facts developed in logical and continuous sequence? Isthere a definite conclusion, and was it adequately based on the facts or data presented?

Delivery and Effectiveness : Are the words distinctly pronounced and was proper volume used to be heard by all?Is proper English used, and is the vocabulary sufficient? Is personal appearance appropriate? Are there anydistracting mannerisms? Is the manner of delivery (conversation, memorized, read from manuscript) satisfactory? If visual aids are used, how effectively are they used? Is the presentation within the time limit of 15 minutesallowed?

Discussion : Is the presentation evoking spontaneous questions from the audience? Are the questions indicating theneed for clarification of facts presented, or were they merely of the type seeking additional information? Howreadily and with what self-assurance did the speaker answer questions? Are the answers indicating knowledgeof the subject beyond that disclosed in the original presentation? Is the ability to think clearly demonstrated?

The Old Guard pays for a one time membership upgrade for the First Place winners of the competition, upon

request. Each ASME District is entitled to select one (1) Old Guard Oral Presentation winner at its annual Student Profes-sional Development Conference (SPDC) to represent the District at the finals of the Old Guard Oral PresentationCompetition. North American Districts choosing to have more than one Student Professional Development Conferencein a given year are entitled to select a maximum of two (2) Oral Competition winners, but no more than one perconference. No substantial changes from the presentation given at the District Student Professional Development Conference maybe made for the finals at IMECE. Any substantial change of title or major revision of the presentation given at theDistrict SPDC will result in disqualification and may result in loss of travel reimbursement.

2.2 Old Guard Video Presentation Competition

    http://www.asme.org/events/competitions/old-guard-competitions/old-guard-video-presentation-competitionRules and Procedures : http://files.asme.org/asmeorg/Events/Contests/17429.pdf

    Purpose of the contest

The Old Guard Video Presentation Competition is an exclusive program for ASME Districts and Student Membersoutside of North America. Leaders of Districts G, H, I and J may determine to host a Video Competition in lieu of,or in addition to the traditional Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition that takes place at Student ProfessionalDevelopment Conferences (SPDC) in the spring. The main difference between these two competitions is in the flex-ibility that the Video Competition allows for non-North American Districts; while the traditional Oral PresentationCompetition allows for only live, English-language presentations at SPDCs, submissions to the Video PresentationCompetition can be made online, and may come in any language(s) approved by the District Leader. Like the originalOld Guard Competition, this new program puts great emphasis on the value of an ability to deliver clear, conciseand effective presentations to an audience, particularly pertaining to some sphere in which an engineer is or should beinvolved. Though there is no final cross-District competition, the video format offers each participant wide exposure

to, and visibility in ASME networks worldwide. The subject matter of each presentation must address a technical, economic or environmental aspect of engineering or other basic engineering theme, provided it pertains to some spherein which an engineer is or should be involved. A major portion of a contestants total score is based on the judgesevaluation of his/her relative capability to communicate orally, including evidence of a talent to respond effectively inthe Q&A period.A competitor may utilize any available resource but must realize that the presentation is to be an individual effort.Assistance in the use of visual aids is permitted (Powerpoint, etc.) but must appear clearly in the video. Good practiceand courtesy suggests credit be given during the presentation for any outside help related to the reported project. Awritten paper or manuscript is not required.

Each presentation shall be made by one contestant to an audience of at least 10 students and/or faculty membersfrom the engineering department of the presenters school, including two timekeepers. Video submissions should not

exceed these limits, nor should the competition proceedings be edited in any way (i.e. each video submission shouldbe 20 minutes, uninterrupted). and instructed to keep time as follows:

Each presentation must last 15 minutes, followed by a five-minute Question and Answer (Q&A) period.

Questions are limited to Student Members in the audience. Each student posing a question to a speaker muststand, identify himself/herself, and then proceed with the question.

The presenter must appoint two timekeepers within his/her audience prior to the presentation. Timekeepersmust be non-contestant Student Members. They are to be introduced by name at the beginning of each session.

At the end of twelve minutes, the first timekeeper will rise to signal to the speaker that there are three minutesremaining. After the speaker nods to acknowledge the signal, the timekeeper will sit down.

At the end of fourteen minutes, the second timekeeper will rise to signal to the speaker that there is one minuteremaining. After the speaker acknowledges the signal, the timekeeper will sit down.

At the end of fifteen minutes, both timekeepers will rise together and remain standing until the speaker concludesthe presentation.

    Judging and awards

It is the responsibility of each District Leader to assemble judges according to competition rules, and coordinate theselection of a 1st Place winner within their respective Districts. All submissions to a single District are to be judged by the same individuals, preferably three to five ASME membersof mature judgment. This panel is to be assembled by the District Leader and briefed on competition procedures andrules.

The Presentations will be judged in the following four categories:
