    2. Poorly written applications they stay resident in memoryand waste CPU cycles (i.e. Junk Applications) .

Apps that function as an Explorer plug-in, because

they directly hook into the shell and any problem will make

your entire PC slow or in the worst case, crash repeatedly.

    3. Antivirus applications are notorious for slowing your PC

down, and you should never, ever, ever use more than one

real-time antivirus application at a time.

    4. Users gradually easing off their safeguards and cleaning

routines regimens as time goes by. Keep your PC clean and

    5. Bad Drivers - make sure to install official system drivers from

the manufacturer website. Drivers have a huge impact on

performance, and you want to have stable, updated drivers.

    6. CPU overheating - Dust is preventing the fan from spinning

    smoothly.

Some of these signs includ e:

    a. If you start hearing noises only occasionally or noises thatyou've never heard before.

    Importance of Security

    How to enforce it.

    1. Turn on Windows Update

    PC Updates (Window Update) for

    security patches and fixes

    Security patches - A

    security patch is a change

    applied to an asset to

    correct the weakness

    described by a

    vulnerability. This

    corrective action will

    prevent successful

    exploitation and remove

    or mitigate a threats

    capability to exploit a

    specific vulnerability in

    an asset.

    Security patches are the

    primary method of fixing

    security vulnerabilities in

    software. Currently Microsoft

    releases its security patches

    once a month, and other

    operating systems and

    software projects have

    security teams dedicated to

    releasing the most reliable

    software patches as soon after

    a vulnerability announcement

    as possible. Security patches

    are closely tied to responsible

    disclosure.

Dentist offices are subject to the Health Insurance

Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996.

HIPAA was enacted originally to address the electronic

transmission of health information. In 2001, the privacy rule

was created by the Department of Health and Human Services,

this department is responsible for monitoring compliance with

    HIPAA.

HIPAA requires security to be in place in the event that

    protected health information is disclosed.

    The HIPAA Privacy Rule

HIPAA is pertinent to the protection of health information.

Protected health information is any oral or written information

about a patient that relates to the physical or mental condition of

    a patient.

HIPAA applies to "covered entities," which are statutorily

defined as those entities which receive, use or are exposed to

    protected, private patient health information.

    29/35

    HIPAA Security Rule

    Presentation may by found at:www.gjdsolutions.com/Presentations/SDDS

Pursuant to HIPAA, there must be security efforts by a

covered entity which handles the electronic storage and

transmission of patient protected health information.

Under this rule, a provider has to provide HIPAA employee

training in the handling of patients' electronic records.

The computer system must be password protected, contain

back up emergency disaster plans and firewall protection.

A dental office must take steps to ensure the office complies

    with this requirement.

  • 7/27/2019 SDDS4.pdf

    30/35

    HIPAA Privacy Rule Compliance

To comply with HIPAA, a dental office must enforce measures

to protect the patients health information.

The dental office procedure to require patients to sign a

document which states who can receive their health informationis one routine to comply with HIPAA.

Dental offices must create and maintain a HIPAA privacy

policy and procedures to be practiced in order to comply with

    the privacy rule.

Dental offices must present an explanation of the privacy

policies and procedures for the patients' review and

    acknowledgement.

    31/35

    HIPAA Enforcement

In 2006, the final enforcement for HIPAA was released that

identifies the procedure for complaints of HIPAA violations and

provides for civil monetary penalties that can be assessed for

    violations of HIPAA.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services, in

concurrence with other state and/or federal departments

    administrates the enforcement of HIPAA.

    HIPAA and Paper Transactions

It is important to note that a dental office may not be subject to

the privacy rules, hence may be exempt from HIPAA IF a dentisthandles insurance or other business transactions on paper.

However, wh en the paper is exchanged or inpu t into

electronic form at some point, such as where the paper is

submitted to an insurer, then the transaction is subject to HIPAA.
