A Famous Speech Kindles LearningAt a tiny school in Vermont, The Gettysburg

Address is reborn each year.At the Greenwood School, students are encouraged

to memorize, practice and recite President Abraham Lincoln’s most powerful speech. In The Address, filmmaker Ken Burns explores this effort at the school and unlocks the history, context and importance of The Gettysburg Address.

As part of Burns’ project, SDPB has been encouraging people, classrooms and schools across South Dakota to record their version of The Gettysburg Address. The results are captured on the Web at SDPB.org/TheAddress, where more than 17 versions of the speech are featured. They also are part of the national website.

There is still time to record and upload your version. Go to SDPB.org/TheAddress for the details.

Lincoln made the speech 150 years ago, on Nov. 19, 1863, at the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

In Burns’ film, the Greenwood School students, boys ages 11-17, all face a range of complex learning differences that make their progress challenging. The Address reveals how President Lincoln’s historic words motivate these students 150 years later.

The Address airs on SDPB1 Television on Tuesday, April 15, at 8pm (7 MT); and on SDPB2 on Friday, April 18, at 6:30pm (5:30 MT).

A Little Bit of Advice, a Lot of Laughs, and a Ton of Brotherly Love

Sometimes, NPR has a reputation for being a bit high-brow – in other words,

taking themselves way too seriously. Nobody has ever thought that about Car Talk.

Every week, 3.3 million people tune in to a radio program about automobiles and … other stuff. It’s fun, it’s funny and no mechanical knowledge whatsoever is required.

How did a couple of Boston-area mechanics create a Peabody Award-winning show that is one of the most popular on public radio? Here’s how the brothers Magliozzi tell it.

“You’re probably wondering how two low-life bums like us could end up having a weekly radio show on a prestigious network like NPR. We’re wondering too. We’ve been wondering for years – but it doesn’t stop us from cashing that paycheck that shows up every month.

“The truth is, we got a call one day back in 1977, from Vic Wheatman, the Program Director at Boston’s WBUR Radio. …

“Anyway, Vic called, asking if Tom and Ray would sit in with four other grease monkeys on a call in talk show about car mechanics. After a few milliseconds of thinking about it, Tom realized he had nothing more meaningful to do with his life, and said, “sure.” (Ray claims he had a

hair dressers appointment that day. This is unlikely but plausible,

since Ray had hair in those days.) It turned out, Tom was the only one who showed up – all the other mechanics decided not to show their faces – wisely assuming that this “radio show” was probably some kind of Department of Consumer Affairs sting operation. So the panel of five turned

out to be a panel of one:

Tom. Things went surprisingly well, though: Tom gave out many wrong answers, and misled many callers – but did so with such finesse that he was invited back the following week.

And when Thomas showed up that next time, the studio was empty. Vic Wheatman had been fired! There was a letter saying, “You’re on your own, have a good time, and try to watch your language.”

“This was an historic moment in Car Talk history, for it was the only time a Program Director was fired before he or she put Car Talk on the air!

“And the next week, Tom made The Biggest Mistake in the History of Car Talk: he brought along his brother, Ray.

“The early days of Car Talk was a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth and people actually worked on their own cars. We answered a lot of questions like, “I’m stuck with my left arm in the transmission, how do I get it out?” and, “I lost a three-eighths hex wrench taking off the cylinder head, but I can’t bend down

to pick it up because I have the timing chain in my right hand - could you send your brother over to help me?

“We were crammed into a tiny studio. It was the two of us, and an engineer who ran the control board – he had to be darn quiet, or you’d hear him on the air.

“After several years of doing Car Talk pro bono, as they say, we finally steeled up our nerve and asked WBUR for twenty bucks a week. To our shock and amazement, they agreed to it on the spot. At that moment, we realized that we had obviously asked for too little. We kicked ourselves all the way home. This did, however, mean that we could buy donuts and coffee each week. In 1980, we asked for a five dollar a week raise and they told us to take a long walk off a short plank.

Documentary Explores Mickelson Trail

Since its dedication in 1998, the George S. Mickelson Trail has become one of South Dakota’s most popular outdoor attractions. Running 109 miles through the very heart of the Black Hills, the trail attracts more than 60,000 users annually.

Piece of Heaven A Brief History of the Mickelson Trail tells the story of the development of the Mickelson Trail, from the end of its useful life as a rail corridor through the tough legal battles that put the land in public hands, to the ongoing work of promoting and maintaining what many call a world-class recreational trail.

Shooting Skills in South DakotaWe’re shooting arrows and pool, and learning gun safety in April as Dakota

Life travels across the state. The program will profile a talented young Yankton archer, head for gun safety training in Pierre, stop by Clay County Park and the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls, and shoot some pool with a Sioux Falls man.

April’s Dakota Life premieres on SDPB1 Television on Thursday, April 3, at 8pm (7 MT). The signature SDPB Television features magazine goes across the state to find the interesting faces and places that make South Dakota such a great place to live. The program airs several times during the month and will be available for on-demand viewing at SDPB.org/DakotaLife.

April’s lineup includes:• Archer – 14-year-old Kendra Hunhoff of Yankton has risen to the top

of her game since she started archery just a couple years ago.• Pierre Junior Shooting

Club – The organization has a rich tradition of providing quality gun safety instruction and marksmanship training to the youth of the Pierre/Fort Pierre area. The Pierre area shooters have won five national titles in the past eight years.

• The Outdoor Experience – The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks partners with local groups to bring the outdoor experience to both youth and adults in places like Clay County Park and the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls.

• The South Dakota Kid – Shane Van Boening of Sioux Falls is making a his mark on the professional pool playing circuit.

Professional player Shane Van Boening got his pool-playing start at age 2.

Kendra Hunhoff practices archery.

(Continued from page 5) We didn’t argue, since a case

easily could have been made that twenty bucks a week was twenty bucks too much already.

“Despite our complete lack of preparation and our consumate unprofessionalism that set new lows in radio, the show somehow managed to not only survive, but to thrive. The now notorious Car Talk puzzler effectively doubled our listener base, as three more relatives (okay, okay, uncle Nunzio and cousin Vinny were both in the slammer, so they were sort of a “captive” audience) began listening to the show.

“How we ended up going national is somewhat a matter of contention. … Of course, WBUR’s General Manager, Jane Christo says that, by that point, she had been sending in tapes to NPR for several years in a row. Of course, we knew all along that she was chucking them in the dumpster outside the station. She used to tell us, “Oh yes, boys, of course I sent the tape in! It was rejected again, sorry.”

“Along the way, we picked up our esteemed producer, Mr. Dougie Berman.

“Since 1987, Berman has made every conceivable attempt to refine, focus, and otherwise elevate the standards for the show. We would like to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to Doug for our

complete inability to follow any of his directions, despite his best intentions. He’s long since given up on us.

“The person who first put us on the air nationally was NPR’s Susan Stamberg, who invited us to host a weekly “Car Talk” segment on her new show, Sunday Weekend Edition.

“Susan is a great person - funny, charming and quite smart. That’s why we’re so terribly troubled, having single-handedly wrecked her program.

“Nine months after starting with Susan, in the fall of 1987, NPR agreed to launch Car Talk nationally. So there we were, following in the footsteps of award programs like All Things Considered, Weekend Edition, and Morning Edition. We, like you, remain entirely mystified and have no idea what combination of prescription medicines brought about a decision like this out of

NPR’s management. We can only assume that they were looking for some cultural diversity, trying somehow to balance their high quality programming with crud like ours. Stations turned to us in droves – much in the same way that lemmings flock to the sea.

“We discovered pretty quickly that producing a national radio show is a lot of work! Shortly after going national, we decided we needed a staff. That way, our afternoon naps could continue uninterrupted and, when not napping, we could still pursue our CAFE study. (Don’t confuse this with the government’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy report. Ours is about latte and cappucino in the greater metropolitan Boston area.) So, in 1989, we founded Dewey, Cheatem and Howe.

“In all seriousness, we’ve had lot of fun along the way. … Oh – and one more thing - Don’t drive like my brother!”

The brothers are actual mechanics and own a repair garage. They are also both graduates of the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They get into the nuts and bolts of car repair in their weekly program, but that’s not all. They might not know as much about other topics like relationships or parenting, but they’re not afraid to share their wisdom there, too.

They’ve been featured on the PBS science show NOVA, and “The Tonight Show,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Today Show,” and “60 Minutes,” to name a few. They have been celebrated in print as well, with features in The New York Times, USA Today and Rolling Stone.

Today, they are retired – Tom is 74 and Ray is 65 – and the weekly radio show is crafted out of the great national shows from 1987 to 2012. On SDPB Radio, Car Talk airs on Saturdays at 9am (8 MT).

It’s still fresh and fun and, not surprisingly, listeners are increasing, because a little bit of advice, a lot of laughs and a ton of brotherly love is just what the doctor ordered.

Wake Up with Morning EditionWaking up is hard to do, but it’s easier with NPR’s Morning

Edition. Hosts Renée Montagne, Steve Inskeep and David Greene bring the day’s stories and news to radio listeners on the go.

The program’s hosts interview newsmakers from politicians, to academics, to filmmakers and more. Morning Edition provides news in context, airs thoughtful ideas and commentary, and reviews important new music, books, and events in the arts.

Morning Edition has been mixing humor and hard news, analysis and arts for more than three decades, The program draws more public radio listeners than any other program, as listeners tune in to start their day.

Montagne has been a host for the newsmagazine since 2004 and broadcasts out of NPR’s Culver City, Calif., studio. Inskeep has also been a Morning Edition host since 2004. He generally hosts from Washington, D.C., but often goes on the road, most recently along the U.S.-Mexican border in March. Greene has been a substitute host for the program since 2010. He also fills in on Weekend Edition.

Morning Edition opens the day on SDPB Radio at 5am (4 MT) and offers four hours of news from the world, the nation and South Dakota. Local Host for the program is Gary Ellenbolt.

Changing the Sound of RadioBuilt around the innovative personal vision of Host Ira Glass, This

American Life has pioneered a new kind of radio. The weekly program explores a theme – fiascos, conventions, frenemies – through a mix of documentaries, radio monologues, investigative stories, and occasional fiction.

Usually the program applies the tools of journalism to everyday life. But sometimes it tackles news stories, leading to some of its most distinctive and acclaimed shows. This American Life did an hour documenting life on an aircraft carrier that was flying missions over Afghanistan during the war there. It spent another hour explaining exactly what caused the sub prime mortgage crisis. One show followed school reform over a decade at a Chicago public school. Another was about the most successful informant in FBI history, and how he double-crossed his employer, Archer Daniels-Midland, and then the FBI.

The stories presented are engaging, intimate, surprising, funny, disturbing, bittersweet.

This American Life airs on SDPB Radio on Saturdays at Noon (11 MT) and Sundays at 6pm (5 MT).

Glass will make a rare public appearance in South Dakota on April 5 at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls. He will recreate some of the sounds of the show for the audience by mixing live onstage stories with pre-taped quotes and music. In addition, the show will feature a “best of” segment from the series’ funniest moments. He will present for an hour and then take questions for 30 minutes.

Regional Books Featured with Book ClubSDPB.org/BookClub

The South Dakota area is home to many fine authors and SDPB Radio focuses on area writers in the Dakota Midday Book Club.

The club features authors during Dakota Midday Book Club on the fifth Friday of the month and presents special interviews at other times for members of the club.

The next special interview is coming up this month when Patrick Hicks, writer in residence at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, is featured on Monday, April 21, at Noon (11 MT). The featured book is “The Commandant of Lubizec.”

You can read the book ahead of time to prepare or even join the book club and get a copy. The book club is open to Friends of SDPB supporters who donate $300 annually, or $25 per month. When you choose the book club as your thank you gift, you receive four books over the course of a year. You can even become an Evergreen Member, with automatic monthly donations, and your membership in the club will be automatically renewed. Go to SDPB.org/BookClub or call 800-333-0789 to join.

The next fifth Friday edition of Dakota Midday Book Club will be May 30 at Noon (11 MT).

SDPB Radio Connects Us with Storytelling

SDPB Radio tells our stories – from South Dakota, the nation and the world. We’re asking you to join us by offering your support April 5-12.

SDPB Radio uses storytelling to expand our knowledge of the world with award-winning programs like Radiolab, This American Life, TED Radio Hour and On the Media.

We bring the human element into the news with programs like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Marketplace and The World.

We explore the state of our state with Dakota Digest news reports and the Dakota Midday talk program. And we fill our artistic needs with local music programs like Morning Classics, Jazz Nightly and No Cover, No Minimum Radio.

We even lighten the load with laughter with programs like Car Talk, Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, Wits and A Prairie Home Companion.

Check out the radio schedule on page 19 and tune in every day. Storytelling is an art, and SDPB Radio paints the picture with words

and music every day.SDPB Radio is an experience like

no other on radio. And that’s due in large part to you, the listeners. The contributions of listeners to Friends of SDPB allows SDPB Radio to go beyond the ordinary to extraordinary. Thank you.
