2 ~ TALK OF THE WALK APRIL 2019

INDEXNEWS FROM NOELLE

What an exciting Season it has been. I want to thank the Open Artist Studio for hosting an incredible Art Show and Sale on March 10th. We had record numbers of attendees and artist participation. I would also like to thank our VillageWalk realtors, Kellie Brown, Mark Edwards and Kelley Short for sponsoring our Community Shredding Day on March 9th. And finally, special thanks to Realtor, Leslie Prinz for sponsoring our Tennis Pro Am on March 14th. I have received so many wonderful comments from our residents about these great events.

I truly appreciate the support that our residents show to our onsite vendors including our Fresh Fish Market, Mobile Bike Repair and Farmers Markets. All of our vendors are grateful for your patronage.

VillageWalk Bonita is definitely a Southwest Florida paradise, but what makes it really special are our volunteers. On Thursday, April 18th, the KW Management staff will honor our volunteers by hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Lunch. If you have volunteered in any capacity during the 2018/2019 season, please sign up at the Town Center office by April 12th.

The Activities Advisory Committee is looking for two new committee members. This committee plans, coordinates, promotes and volunteers for the events and activities hosted by the Activities Office and the Lifestyle Director. The committee prefers members who reside in VillageWalk year round, as we plan the Season in the summer months. You need to be able to attend at least 7 out of 12 monthly meetings, act as an Activity Ambassador for at least one event and volunteer no less than 9 times a year. If you love to plan parties, need to explore your creative side or have a talent for coordination and organization, you may be a right fit for us. Please contact Noelle Knight at [email protected] and submit your request to join the committee.

Thanks to everyone who has made this Season an unbelievable success. Your participation and fun loving energy, makes it a joy to work at VillageWalk.

Smiling With Gratitude,

Noelle

For special events, including dinner dances, there will be a full refund for cancellations made 7 days prior to the event. For day trips, the minimum cancellation is 15 days prior. Happy Easter and Happy Passover!to all VillageWalk residents!

A Spring Message from your HOA President Matt Jacovelli It is hard to believe that our first year has passed; a lot has been accomplished.

I want to welcome our new general manager, John Rowland, and our two new board members, Ray Dobbins, 2nd Vice-President, and Randy Van Alstine, Secretary. With incumbent board members Bill Packard, Treasurer, and Bruce Potterton, 1st Vice-President, we are excited to accomplish much more in the coming year. I also want to thank outgoing board member Robin Burke for her many contributions in the past year. She will be missed.

This year, we are moving forward with a new playground, event room remodeling, screened-in dining terrace at the restaurant and enhanced sport courts. We are happy to support our new tenant, Hole in One Bagels.

With the support of residents, our talented volunteers, management and board members working together, our community will continue to improve. 2018’s success would not have been possible without your support, for that we are grateful. We will continue to be committed to VillageWalk in 2019. Your input is important to us.

Our 2019 board meeting schedule has been announced. If you are unable to attend our meetings, please use the VillageWalk hotline for your comments by emailing [email protected].

Thank you,Matt Jacovelli, HOA Board President

We Will Soon Say Goodbye to our Seasonal Residents! Take care while you are away and know we look forward to your return next season. Here are some helpful hints regarding the care and protection of your home while you are away. Please read carefully and make arrangements for your home to be checked at least once per month. • Turn off the water to your home.• Turn off the hot water heater at breaker switch. • Keep the air conditioning running: set between 78 & 80 degrees. • If you have a humidistat, it is recommended setting it to control the HVAC. • Consider disconnecting certain appliances from their power supply (TV, stereo, computers, etc.) to protect them from lightning and power surges. • Have a hurricane plan in place: who will install and remove your shutters if they have not been painted, and who will be willing to check your home

for damage should we get a hurricane. • Remove potted plants and other loose items from the exterior of your home so they do not become missiles during a hurricane, possibly causing

property damage to you or your neighbor’s homes.• Contact ADT Home Security: let them know you are leaving and make sure they have your contact information. • Consider asking a neighbor or home watch service to watch your home: it is extremely important to have someone to flush commodes, run water

through the bathroom faucets, tubs and showers, check the pool, air-conditioning and to maintain the weeds for you while you are away. • Notify the Post Office and have your mail forwarded. • Halt the newspaper service.

2. All traffic at the gate is monitored by video and audio systems. Anyone hitting the gates will be charged for the repairs.

3. If you have questions regarding the rules of entry, please contact the HOA for clarification. These rules were made by the HOA for the benefit of all of the residents at VillageWalk. The guards cannot make exceptions.

Safety Tips In Your Home and CommunityHere are some tips that the Lee County Sheriff’s Office feel you should know. Even though we live in a safe community there are many outsiders

in our community every day. No community is totally secure.IN YOUR HOME• Lock your house whenever you leave it. If you have an alarm

system, turn it on when you leave.• If you do not have a glass door or sidelight install a 180

degree peep hole.• If you do have a glass door or sidelight and it is not high

impact glass, change your lock to have a keyed lock inside. Its easy to break the glass and just turn the knob to unlock the door.

• Keep your garage door closed at all times (also in the VW rules).

• If you have a glass door or sidelight change your dead bolt lock to have a keyed side on the interior. Do not leave the key in the lock.

• When away keep at least one light on inside your home.• Do not hide keys outside your home.Do not mark your keys

with your name or address.• Do not advertise that you live alone.• DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR FOR STRANGERS.

IN YOUR CAR• ALWAYS LOCK YOUR CAR• If you think you are being followed do not drive home. Drive

to the nearest police station, fire house or gas station.• If you have car troubles, raise the hood and stay in the car

with the doors locked and windows closed. If someone stops to help and you did not make a call for help, ask them to do it for you. Only crack the window when speaking with them.

• Carry a cell phone.• Park in well lighted areas.

APRIL 2019 TALK OF THE WALK~ 17

CLUBS

HOOKED ON BOOKS I Wednesday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m.We will meet at 1 pm at the Town Center to discuss “Home for Unwanted Girls" by Joanne Goodman. Carol Hagstrom will be leading the discussion. In 1950s Quebec, French and English tolerate each other with precarious civility—much like Maggie Hughes’ parents. Maggie’s English-speaking father has ambitions for his daughter that do not include marriage to the poor French boy on the next farm over. But Maggie’s heart is captured by Gabriel Phénix. When she becomes pregnant at fifteen, her parents force her to give baby Elodie up for adoption and get her life ‘back on track’.Maggie, married to a businessman eager to start a family, cannot forget the daughter she was forced to abandon, and a chance reconnection with Gabriel spurs a wrenching choice. As time passes, the stories of Maggie and Elodie intertwine but never touch, until Maggie realizes she must take what she wants from life and go in search of her long-lost daughter, finally reclaiming the truth that has been denied them both.If you want to be put on our waiting list, please call Dorothy at 390-9417.

HOOKED ON BOOKS IIThursday, April 4 at 6:00 p.m.As always, we will meet at the Town Center for our optional "Preface" at 6 pm, with regular meeting following at 6:30 pm. Nancy will be leading our discussion of Lawrence Anthony's THE ELEPHANT WHISPERER.When the author (a south African conservationist) was asked to accept a herd of 'rogue' wild elephants on his game reserve, common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival. This is just the beginning of an exciting story of how he eventually ended up becoming part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with these animals, he realized they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty and freedom. Anyone with questions, or to be added to our waiting list, please contact Michele Cudnik at [email protected]

HOOKED ON BOOKS lll Wednesday, April 3 at 1:00 pmWe will be meeting at 1 pm in the Town Center as we review a great book titled "EDUCATED" by Tara Westover. Our discussion will be done by Jay at that time. A Mormon family in Utah with 7 children deals with mental illness, child abuse and the passion to learn.Upcoming on May 1st at 1 pm, we will be reviewing "The Necklace" by Cheryl Jarvis. Our discussion will be about 13 women and an experiment that changed their lives.

VILLAGE WALK GARDEN CLUB

General Meeting, Tuesday, April 16, 2019 • 11:00 a.m. This month we are pleased to have Victor Camp, a zoologist in the Department of Marine and Ecological Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University, discuss his research on river otters. Currently, he is the only individual at any university in Florida studying these fascinating creatures! Please RSVP to [email protected] by March 14th.

Trips and ToursLast month Garden Club members were treated to a tour of a private garden designed by Christian Busk, an international garden designer, who was on site to explain in more detail what they viewed. We presented the owner, who spends half her time in the Swiss Alps and half her time on the beach here, with a beautiful orchid. The trips we take during the year are quite interesting, and reason enough to be a garden club member!

On April 23rd, we will visit The Crooked Garden at Pelican Preserve in Fort Myers. This is a Butterfly Garden designed and maintained by residents. Cost of the tour is $5.00. We will carpool from the Bocce parking lot at 9:00 a.m. The tour will be at 10:00 a.m.

Butterfly Garden NewsThe Butterfly Gardens are lush, beautiful, and waiting for your help. Any gardener with any skill level is welcome. For more information, contact Linda Blaise at 239-221-8394.

We discuss plans for emergency situations and refresh our training to enable us to better function as a team. We always seek more volunteers to better address emergency events. Residents interested in joining should contact Nicole Hornberger at Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue, phone (239) 949-6227, email [email protected]. If you would like more information or have any questions, please email [email protected].

The Cancer Crusaders The Cancer Crusaders are a group of Village Walk cancer survivors, friends, and volunteers who are dedicated to helping find a cure for cancer, supporting organizations that provide services to cancer patients, and to reaching out to those in Village Walk who have been touched by cancer. Some of the organizations supported by the Cancer Crusaders include Susan G. Komen, Relay for Life and Partners for Breast Cancer.

We offer a forum for those whose lives have been touched by cancer—survivors, caregivers, and anyone who would like to be involved.

We hold a High Tea and Fashion Show benefiting a breast cancer charity in the fall. This year we are pleased to announce that we will again support Partners for Breast Cancer Care, Inc., a local charity providing breast cancer care to uninsured, low-income women and men. SAVE THE DATE FOR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14!

Additionally we support the Relay For Life of Bonita Springs-Estero, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, representing ALL cancers. Again this year we will be "Painting the Village Purple” and decorating our “Tree of Hope.” Purple bows and Tribute Cards honoring or remembering those touched by cancer will be on sale at various venues in VillageWalk from March 24-April 8 (watch for announcements). The Tree of Hope will be on display in the Town Center Lobby from March 24-April 8, and purple bows will be displayed till April 15. Thank you for your support! BIKE CLUB

April Ride to Gordon River Greenway & Freedom Park Saturday, April 27, 20199:00 am departure from the bocce courts. For our bike ride this month we will ride along the Gordon River Greenway, make a stop at Freedom Park across the street, then stop for lunch at Spanky’s Bar & Grill. Getting there is

very easy. Take I-75 south to Golden Gate Parkway. Turn right. After you cross the bridge over Airport-Pulling Road, look left for the Gordon River Greenway sign on Vinland Drive about a block away. This is a relatively slow and short ride of only 7.5 miles, and the Greenway is great if you are new to biking. What it lacks in distance, it makes up for in scenery. The ride starts at the north end of the park where there are restrooms and water. We will then ride south along the elevated path through the greenway. There are plenty of places to pull over, take pictures, have a drink, etc. The south end of the trail ends at the northwest corner of the Naples Municipal Airport. We will continue south on North Road skirting the west and south side of the airport. There is a lookout on the south side where we will stop and watch planes take off and land. Once we reach Airport-Pulling Rd, we will turn around and head back. Once we are back and have our bikes loaded, we will drive across the street to Freedom Park. There’s a 5-acre lake with boardwalks throughout the park. There’s an education facility, restrooms, lookout pavilions, water fountains, and walking trails. Educational and information signage is everywhere throughout the park. When we are ready to eat, we will head over to Spanky’s Bar & Grill for lunch. It has an old bicycle in the window so I guess we HAVE to go there. It is located at 1550 Airport Pulling Road. Please RSVP me if you can attend this ride. If you and/or your bike need a ride, please let me know before that day. Don’t forget to bring your helmet, bike lock, water, cellphone, and sunscreen.

Don't have someone to play tennis with? No worries! We have several sessions you can simply 'walk-on' here at VW where ALL levels are welcome! On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the women get together at 8 am for 'walk-on' women's doubles. The men get together at 8 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays! Enjoy mixed doubles? Thursday night at 5:00 pm and Saturdays at 9:30 am assemble a great group of players too! Lastly, we have recently introduced walk-on 'short-court tennis' every Sunday at 11 am. It’s a great way to practice your net game, return to tennis slowly, or if you simply don't want to run down a full court!

Did you know? Ask the Tennis Pro!Question: During a tournament doubles match, my partner dropped her racquet in the middle of a point. I was able to back her up and get to the next ball while she recovered, picked up her racquet and moved back into position. Could our opponents have called a let and restarted the point or claimed it based on being hindered?

Answer from Herbert Wormser VW Tennis Pro:Dropping a racquet is not grounds for a let to be called or for someone to claim a hindrance. Dropping the racquet is considered not to be “sufficiently unusual” for hindrance or let to be called. A similar situation is reference in "Friend at Court" in USTA Comment 22.1: Dropping the racquet is not the same thing as a ball falling out of a pocket or a hat flying off.
