‘SEA SNAKES’[PELAMIS] TO CREATE ELECTRICITY

INTRODUCTION• It is a technology that uses the motion of ocean
surface waves to create electricity.• This device is known as a combination of POINT
ABSORBER and SURGING DEVICE.• It can effectively focus energy from a wide area by
interacting with an area of waves.

PRINCIPLE OF PELAMIS
• The waves being created by the progressive transfer of energy from the wind as it blows over the surface of the water.
• The cylindrical structure of the converter joints is moved due to the action of waves of the sea and thereby creates energy.
CONSTRUCTION• The Pelamis Wave Energy Converter is a semi-
submerged device, composed of cylindrical sections linked by hinged joints.
• Each of the machine is 150m long and 3.5m in diameters and weigh about 700 tones of carbon steel.
• A single device is composed of four articulated sections joined by three power modules.
OPERATION• The wave-induced motion of these joints is resisted
by hydraulic rams. • As waves moves the joints up and down and side to
side, hydraulic ram moves according to it which pumps high pressure oil to the hydraulic motor.
• The hydraulic motors drive electrical generators to produce electricity.
• The generated electricity is transmitted through power sea cable.

SUBSEA POWER CABLES• Power from all the joints is fed down a single
umbilical cable to a junction on the seabed. • Several devices can be connected together and
linked to shore through a single seabed cable.

PROPOSAL FOR INDIA• The country that presently use the pelamis are
Portugal, Ireland, France, Spain.• Estimated amount of pelamis is about 2.25MW
which currently meet the annual demand of 1500 family.
• In India the current demand is more now a days so if we propose this pelamis in INDIA the current demand can be easily reduced.
ADVANTAGES• No maintenance carried out at offshore site • 100% available technology • No offshore intervention required • 'Hands Free' operation • Lowest kWh costs in the market • High return potential• It could become a significant source of energy not
involving CO2 emissions
CONCLUSION• Currently there are few wave power generating farms,
although there is much talk about its potential as a major source of power in the future.
• However, as the technology becomes cheaper, more wave farms will begin to emerge.
• To produce 8x106TWh/year energy using fossil fuels it would result an emission of 2 millions of tones of CO2.
