The two notable aircraft of the Korean War, fought in the 1950s,were the North American F-86F Sabre – used by the South KoreanAllies; and the MiG15, flown by the PLAAF of North Korea.

As an Airfix Club member, you now have the chance to have one ofeach of these aircraft in 1:72 scale kit form, upon joining or renewingyour 2011 membership to the Club. The A82011 two piece set is aLimited Edition, exclusive to the Club.

The MiG15 was one of the most successful swept-wing fighters, achieving fame over the skies of Korea where – early in the war – itoutclassed all enemy fighters. Flown by the People's Liberation ArmyAir Force (PLAAF), our example shows it in camouflage markings as502, flown in North Korea in 1952.

The 1:72 scale model has a finished length of 155mm; width 140mmwith 53 pieces to construct.

The North American F-87F Sabre has justifiably come to be regardedas one of the most outstanding aviation designs of all time. Itsexcellent performance in the Korean War saw it achieving a 10-1 killratio. During its 40-year lifetime, it was to see service with variousair forces around the world.

We have chosen the aircraft 'Little Rita' as flown by Dick Geiger of16th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 51st Fighter Wing, of K-13 (SuwanAir Base), South Korea between 1952-3. With a distinctive 'sharknose' and chequered tail, when finished, she has a length of 158mm,width 157mm with 63 pieces.

Airfix have launched a brand new 1:48 scalemodel of the H.S.Sea Vixen FAW.2 this year undermodel number A11002. The Series 11 setcomplements the existing series of Cold WarMilitary Aircraft admirably.Built initially by de Havilland and latterly under the auspices of HawkerSiddeley of which de Havilland became a part, the Sea Vixen was a1950s-1960s British two-seat jet fighter of the Fleet Air Arm. Its rolewas that of a carrier-based fleet defence fighter. The prototype FAW.1(Fighter – All Weather) took its first flight on 26th September 1951but this first version was not introduced into service until 1959.

The FAW.2 included many improvements over the first version withthe capability of carrying Firestreak missiles, Red Top AAM, fourSNEB rocket pods and the air-to-ground Bullpup missile. The enlargedtail boom allowed additional fuel tanks and the modifications alsoincluded an improved escape system – a par ticular problemassociated with its predecessor the FAW.1.

FAW.2 first flew in 1962 and entered service with front line squadronsin 1964. In 1972, the Sea Vixen was retired from service. Althoughthe aircraft did not take part in any actual wars, it played an importantrole in many operations, particularly in the Middle East and Africa.

In a more relaxed role, the Sea Vixen was for a time part of two RoyalNavy display teams – Simon's Sircus (sic) and Fred's Five. Visitorsto air shows even up to 2007 were able to see the Sea Vixensporting the UK civil registration of G-CVIX in Red Bull livery. Thatyear, it was repainted in 899 NAS colours. G-CVIX is owned andoperated by de Havilland and you can see it at their hangar atBournemouth Airpor t in Dorset. As a modified Sea Vixen D.3, itremains the only airworthy Sea Vixen and is often a flying attractionat the annual round of air shows. Many other Sea Vixens remain ingood condition but do not fly. They are on display at several aircraftmuseums across the UK, including the Imperial War Museum atDuxford.

Airfix’s quarter-scale kit of the famous twin-boomedfighter must be one of the most hotly-anticipated kitsever. With model reference number A11002, you cantreat yourself to this exceptional model for around£34.99.In this article, we offer an exclusive test shot build. This sample came in white plastic, which does posephotographic problems, so we primed certain parts for aclearer picture. On release, the sprues are in the usualAirfix grey.

What’s in the box?Three large sprues littered with parts: Sprue A measures 42cm x 30cm, SprueB 40cm x 31cm and Sprue C 38cm x 30cm. Close inspection reveals crisppanel lines and a level of detail not seen since the 1/48 Lightnings. Some of thesprues are very thick, so care will be needed when removing more delicateparts, such as the canopy and observer’s hatch frame. Cockpit detail itself isrespectable, with well-detailed instruments, rudder pedals, control column andexcellent observer’s scope.

Fair renditions of the ejection seats are provided, being the Martin Baker 4DSA1Mk.4UW, with the observer’s seat featuring pointed canopy breakers. Seat panand face screen firing handles are also there, along with the small head pad butthere is no strap detail. Modellers can add their own, although after-marketmanufacturers will doubtless offer resin seats and/or photo-etched metal straps.

A full fuselageAfter assembling the cockpit (build and paint the seats too, but don’t fit themuntil later), it can be attached to the upper fuselage half.

There are several ejector pin marks in the cockpit, some visible after constructionbut they can be filled and sanded. There’s not much room to execute the task, but a small square of Wet and Dry paper, Superglued to the end of a thin filehandle, is a good make-shift sander for tight spaces.

The trademark airbrake and its bay need assembling and painting. Again, ejectorpin marks adorn the bay decking and need removing and they also show on theairbrake itself. Fitting the airbrake bay traps the brake and one should make thedecision on whether it is to be closed or open.

If the latter, do not glue the hinge points and leave it so it can move. This willallow the airbrake to mask the bay during painting. The fit of the airbrake is goodapart from the hinge line, where there is a gap on each side. This won’t matterif the door is posed open but if to be glued shut, filler is necessary.

The intake trunking and engines fit well, although there are a couple of sink markson the exhaust shroud part (no.10A). Also, there is a gap on the front portionof each intake, which needs to be blanked off with a small strip of plastic cardor stretched sprue, and blended in.

Once painted and assembled these sub-assemblies can be attached to thelower fuselage/wing section. Wing pylons require slots to be cut into the lowerwing and care must be taken with the middle opening because the plastic hereis thin and close to the edge of the inboard wing.

To fold, or not to fold?Happily, there is the choice of having wings folded or in the in-flight position. The folds are well detailed but they do have a couple of ejector pin marks. Holesmust also be drilled in the upper fuselage to accommodate wing supports. Withthe fuselage and inboard wing sections mated, the tail booms can be gluedtogether and the fit is faultless. Once the booms are attached to the fuselage, either glue the tail now, or leave until later to ease masking and painting. Whatdoes strike home is the sharpness of the wing and control surface trailingedges.

One area with the potential for a tricky fit is that of the air intakes but they matepretty well...just a touch of filler may be required on the underside join. Also, paint the inner surfaces of the intake and splitter plate black on the observer’sside, as this is visible through the hatch opening. A further word of advice is tomake sure you rub down the horizontal fuselage join before adding the splitterplates (11A/12A), because it’s tricky to access the joins if they are attached.

Flaps and undercarriageStages 47 and 48 deal with flap assembly and attachment and here one has thechoice of up or down. In the case of flaps up, the fit could be better; the problemhas undoubtedly arisen due to them being such a complex shape. You’ll need tocarefully file back some plastic and continually test-fit. Filler may also be requiredif your file work isn’t spot on. Regarding the undercarriage, Airfix thoughtfullyprovides wheels with normal and weighted profiles. The separate hubs for theoutward-facing side of the main wheels are very convincing. Detail is alsoexcellent on the gear legs themselves. It is best to skip fixing the undercarriageuntil later in the build, for separate painting.

Wing assemblyThe wings fit well, even with separate ailerons, although the wing fence slot is alittle larger then the fence itself, so a dash of filler may be needed if flooding thegap with Liquid Poly doesn’t work. As for the wing-fold sections, the fit couldn’tbe more snug, and the outboard flaps are just as good.

Weapons pylons are next but don’t fit them yet because they’ll interfere withmasking the demarcation between the upper grey paint and the underside white.Simply paint the pylons white and leave them for later. At this stage the nosecone was also fitted, but not before adding 35g of weight.

SEA VIXEN MODEL BUILD CONTINUED...Get painting! The airframe was primed with matt white to highlight any imperfections and to givethe top coats a key. Once dry, mask off the white in preparation for the extra dark seagrey. Gloss varnish followed the grey to aid decaling. Adding these may take sometime. Besides the main squadron markings, serials and national insignia, there’smyriad stencilling which is best applied over several sessions. The decals’ carrierfilm lies between satin and matt and we thought silvering could occur on the reddecals which adorn the topside of the jet. To counter this, Johnson’s Klear floorcovering was applied to the appropriate areas and buffed to a high gloss. The moveworked well and after using decal setting solutions, not a trace of silvering was found. There was a slightly visible lip on the edge of the under-wing serials. With decalingcomplete on the main airframe, separate wings and stores complete, a sealing varnishcan be applied.

After overnight drying, the wings received their main attachment points, pylons andstores. The pitot tubes were left for later due to their delicate nature. Obviously, onecan defer weapons fitting until after the folded outer wings are attached. On fitting theactuator for the airbrake, we found that on our instructions, Airfix has the part numbersthe wrong way round. It is suggested that part 26B is for the airbrake-down positionwhen the jet is on its wheels but it’s not…it should be 27B. Airfix is going to add acorrection sheet and should have amended the actual instructions by the secondproduction run. We did suffer something of an enigma though, as we had a part lefton the sprue, of which there is no mention on the instructions. It’s the aerodynamicfairing which is used when the refuelling probe isn’t fitted (part 90). If one opts foran after-market decal sheet, which offers a scheme without probe, the correct fairingis there. The seats can now be fitted, with a bit of manoeuvring, and the glazed parts

can also be attached. The last job - and it’s not for the nervous - is to attach the outerwings. Due to their weight (especially if weapons are already fitted), a temporarysupport is necessary while they dry in place. The result, though, is fantastic and thefinished model looks every inch the Sea Vixen…and having decent wing folds includedis a real treat.

So, what’s the verdict? We’ve waited years for a good Sea Vixen in this scale and the majority of modellerswon’t be disappointed. There are slight niggles such as ejector pin marks, inboardflaps and some blade aerials are a little thick but these are easily fixed or replaced.Once the paint is on, the wings folded and it’s sitting there in all its glory, the only thingyou’ll say to yourself is, “It’s glorious, but why on earth did take so long to get here?”

25 26 27 28

Under-wing stores and decalsAirfix has been generous with its armoury and supplies four 2in rocket pods, fourRed Top air-to-air missiles and two fuel tanks. All are accurately shaped and welldetailed and the Red Tops in particular look excellent once the provided colouredstripes are applied. The fins are a little thick, but these can be thinned down orreplaced with new items cut from plastic card.Colour scheme options (all extra-dark sea grey over white)A: XS577, 899 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Eagle, March, 1975B: XN650, ‘Simon’s Sircus’, 892 NAS, RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset, 1968C: XP954, 893 NAS, HMS Victorious, 1966D: XP924/G-CVIX, (899 NAS colours), 2010

Airfix has done well in reproducing the Sea Vixen’s under-wing stores, which look very convincing oncepainted and decaled. From top to bottom: Fuel tanks, 2in rocket pods and Red Top missiles.

Airfix’s quarter-scale kit

of the famous twin-

boomed fighter must

be one of the most

hotly anticipated kits ever, so you

can imagine the grins around

the editorial office when we

received this exclusive

test shot before

the official

release later

this month

– and my

excitement

at being

the one to

build it!

Our sample

came in

white plastic,

which isn’t ideal

for photographing,

so we primed certain

parts to get a clearer

picture. On release, the

sprues will be in the

usual Airfix grey.

A full fuselage After assembling the cockpit

(build and paint the seats too, but

don’t fit them until later); attach it

to the upper fuselage half.

The trademark airbrake and

its bay need assembling and

painting. Ejector pin marks

adorn the bay decking and

need removing, and they are

also visible on the

airbrake. Fitting

the airbrake

bay traps the

brake, and you have to decide

whether it is to be closed or open.

If the latter, do not glue the hinge

points and leave it so it can move.

This will allow the airbrake to

mask the bay during painting. The

fit of the airbrake is good apart

from the hinge line,

where there is a gap

on each side. This

won’t matter

if the door is

posed open,

but if it is

to be glued

shut, filler is

necessary.

The intake

trunking and

engines fit well,

although there

are a couple of sink

marks on the exhaust

shroud part (no.10A). Also, there

is a gap on the front portion of

each intake, which needs to be

blanked off with a small strip of

plastic card or stretched sprue,

and blended in.

Chris Clifford builds Airfix’s

new 1/48 Sea Vixen, and finds

there’s much to admire

RED STAR ICON IN FINE FORM

SU-25K Frogfoot Limited EditionYet another KP/OEZ mould gets the lavish Eduard treatment, and this time it’s that Cold War stalwart, the Frogfoot. As well as the medium grey

kit parts, which have stood the test of time well and offer some finely engraved panel lines, one can expect a small etched-metal fret, tape masks

and three bags of resin items. The latter includes a stunning K36 ejection

seat from the manufacturer’s ‘Brassin’ range, which can also be found in

Eduard’s limited edition 1/48 Fitter kit. Weapons consist of dumb bombs,

R-60 (AA-8 Aphid) missiles and 80mm rocket pods. The instruction sheet is

easy to read and the decal sheet is generous, with six interesting options: ‘Red 16’, 160th UAP, Russian Naval Aviation, Borisoglebsk AB, Summer 2000.

‘Red 25’, 368th OShAP, Soviet AF, Tütow AB, Germany, 1993. ‘Red 29’, 378th OShAP, Soviet AF, Bagram AB, Afghanistan, 1993. ‘White 6019/Anca’, 30th bilp, Czechoslovak AF, August 1988. ‘Black 1002’, 32nd zTL, Czech AF, Pardubice, May 1996. ‘3009’, Iraqi AF. PRO

THE WALRUS RETURNS

Lockheed Martin F-104G StarfighterBased on Esci's original Starfighter kit, Italeri has issued this 72nd scale

F-104 gem in a number of guises over the years, and this latest example is one of the best. The moulds have held up well, with the finely engraved

panels lines showing no signs of flash. The additon of an Orphehus reconnaissance pod and a well-printed decal sheet make this kit worth the price from the start. Four excellent decal options comprise both Italian examples and two others:

1983-1991.

STURMOVIK STRIKES AGAIN

Supermarine Walrus MkIIThis welcome return to the shelves will please those who, until now, had to seek the kit from specialist collectors. Although the moulds have been cleaned up, the age of the kit shows, but it is nothing that some 'wet-n-dry', plastic-card and patience can't cure. 1700 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Emperor, British Pacific Fleet, Far East, July 1945. Ilyushin SturmovikAirfix is bringing back a lot of 'golden oldies', and this one comes with a greatly improved decal sheet. The 60-part kit captures the 'functional-look' well, but would benefit from a light sanding to reduce the overscale rivets, and cleaning-up of the smaller parts.

NEW VARIANT OF AN INSTANT CLASSIC

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIIIThe 1/32 Spitfire Mk.IX recently released by Tamiya has become an instant classic, with detail to satisfy even the most fastidious of modellers, but hot Pacific theatres. Seventeen grey sprues carry the plastic parts, but there

are also two photo-etched frets, rubber tyres, nuts and bolts (and tiny screwdriver), and a display stand. Like it’s Mk.IX hangar-mate, a fully detailed

engine can be added and the kit’s instruction manual is clear and concise. Decal options: ‘Lonesome Polecat’, Lt Bill Skinner, 308th FS, 31st FG, 15th AF, USAAF,

‘Grey Nurse’, Wg Cdr ‘Bobby’ Gibbes, No. 80 Wing RAAF, Morotai Island, Dutch East Indies, 1945.

Hawker Siddeley BuccaneerThe world’s best low-level bomber is back in kit form, with a subtle paying inflated prices to collectors – but no longer.
