SEABIRD 19 PLUS QUICK START GUIDE & CHEAT SHEET

SEABIRD 19 PLUS QUICK START GUIDE & CHEAT SHEET

TO GET STARTED:1. Connect SBE19 plus to com port 1 on PC

2. Run SeaTerm.exe program:

The following window will appear (keys of particular interest have been notated):

Interrupt & end activity (e.g.: uploading)Establish comms with 19 Plus (unit sleeps after 2 mins w/out comms from PCUpload data from profilers memory to .csv file for processingProfiler status instrument setup, status, battery count, no. of samples in memory, number of casts taken, etc.Clears profilers buffers / wipes whats in memory

BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO COMMUNICATE WITH SBE19 PLUS:1. Go to configure tab and select SBE19 plus or appropriate model from the listed options, the following window will appear:

Configure the comms settings as shown above.

Check that upload settings are configured as shown below:

If you wish to include default header information this can be set up by selecting the header option from the configure tab.

TO COMMUNICATE WITH SBE19 PLUS & PREPARE FOR DEPLOYMENT:

1. Connect profiler to computer

2. In the SeaTerm window select the CONNECT option (note that unit will connect at baud you have set if it fails it will continue to attempt to establish comms using the other available baud options and if still unsuccessful will prompt with message that is unable to communicate)

3. Once comms are established select the STATUS option, check that the battery count is sufficient (battery cut off is 7.3 volts). The battery count needs to be 10 or higher for the profiler to be deemed good for deployment. Note the scans to average value, this is required when setting up for processing.

4. The unit must be in profiling mode, to put into profiling mode type MP at the S> prompt and enter

5. Change the pump delay value to 10 seconds, to do this at the S> prompt type PUMPDELAY=10

6. To operate the unit in real-time mode you will need to override the magnetic switch, to do this at the S> prompt type IGNORESWITCH=Y

7. Check how many samples and casts are currently in the profiler, you will need to clear the memory of the profiler in preparation for deployment. To reset the memory select the INIT log option, a dialogue box will appear asking you to confirm that you wish to reset the memory to which you will select yes.

DEPLOYMENT & DATA COLLECTION:

1. Do not turn on the switch on the side of the SBE19 plus after installation on the ROV

2. With ROV supplying power establish Comms with unit

3. Check unit status

4. To start logging type STARTNOW in SeaTerm window at the s>prompt, you will see immediately see scrolling data

5. Shut down SeaTerm and follow instructions for real-time logging (below)

6. Once you have completed real-time logging activities you will need to reopen SeaTerm and stop the unit from logging. To stop logging press Enter key to get S> prompt then type STOP

7. Remember that the data will be in the units buffer, to upload data from the buffer select the Upload option from the toolbar and follow the prompts

8. Once you have successfully uploaded the file clear the instrument buffer with the Init Log option

REAL-TIME LOGGING1. Open the Seasave.exe program

2. Go to RealtimeData tab and from list of available options select Start Acquisition, the following window will appear:

3. Select the correct instrument .CON file

4. Select the Enter Output Data File Name tab and setup logging file (.hex) in required directory

5. Select the START ACQUIRE tab, you should then see data scrolling in the main screen:

Data should be updating in here once you have commenced data acquisition

6. Both bottom boxes (Seasave 1.3 & Seasave 1.2) are configurable for format view

7. To stop logging file select the Stop Acquisition option from the RealtimeData tab.

DATA PROCESSING

SETTING UP THE UNIT FOR PROCESSING

1. Run SeaTerm.exe program:

2. Establish communications with the unit.

3. Upload the data by pressing the UPLOAD option. You will be prompted for the cast number 0 will be the first cast. You will also be prompted for a filename which will have a .hex extension.

4. Exit the SeaTerm program.5. Open the SBE Data Processing program:

6. You will need to check that the coefficients for the .con file are correct (the .con file should be provided on a disk in the box with the unit). From the main menu go to the CONFIGURE tab and select the type of unit you are using:

The following box will open up:

In the Scans to average box make the value the same as the value read from the Seabird Status. If these values are not the same the software will not run through the processing.

You will need to check the coefficients for each sensor to do this select a sensor and then hit the OPEN button this should allow you to select the .con/.xmlcon file for the sensor:

Select the appropriate file and then select each sensor in turn and use the MODIFY button to view the coefficients and make any alterations if necessary.

DATA PROCESSING

Processing is done in two phases in the following set order:i. Data Conversionii. Bin Average

1. DATA CONVERSION: From the processing page select DATA CONVERSION from the RUN tab. The following window will appear:

MiscellaneousDATA SETUPFILE SETUP

2. Under the INSTUMENT CONFIGURATION FILE press the SELECT button and select the appropriate .con/.xmlcon file for the unit.

3. Under the INPUT FILES box use the SELECT button to choose the .hex file that you created when you uploaded the data from the unit.

4. Select the directory that you want the processed file saved in from the OUTPUT DIRECTORY box (it is suggested that you keep all associated processing files in one directory).

5. In the NAME APPEND box type DAT.

6. Select the Miscellaneous tab and ensure that the correct Latitude is entered.

7. Select the DATA SETUP tab on the top of the page and ensure that the page is configured as follows:

8. Next you must configure the output variables. Hit the SELECT OUTPUT VARIABLES button on the bottom left-hand side of the screen and set the following variables by adding them from the list on the right-hand side:

i. Pressure (db)ii. Depth (Salt water, m) (you will be prompted to enter the latitude for the area you are working in decimal degrees)iii. Temperature (c)iv. Conductivity (mS/m)v. Density (kg/m^3)vi. Salinity (PSU)vii. Sound Velocity (Chen Millero for depth 1000m)

9. Once you have selected the correct variables click on OK and then return to the FILE SETUP page.

10. Confirm that the selections are correct and then click the PROCESS button to process the file (you will see a blue expanding bar in the processing window to indicate processing is in progress).

11. Once the processing has been completed click the EXIT button.

12. BIN AVERAGE: From the processing page select BIN AVERAGE from the RUN tab. The following window will appear:

13. Under the INPUT FILES box use the SELECT button to choose the edited .cnv dat file that you have just created using UltraEdit.

14. In the NAME APPEND box type BIN and ensure that you are outputting to a different file (eg: Geo1BIN.cnv).

15. Select the DATA SETUP tab at the top of the page (same as you did for the DATA CONVERSION Process) and ensure that the page is set as follows:

16. Once this has been done return to the FILE SEUP tab and click on the PROCESS button.

17. Click the EXIT button once the program has indicated that the processing has been successfully completed.

18. Open the BIN file you have just created in excel. Sort the data into columns with SPACE as the delimiter. The columns within the excel sheet should be as follows:

Column 1Column 2Column 3Column 4Column 5Column 6Column 7Column 8

Pressure (db)Depth (m)Temperature (c)Conductivity (mS/m)Density (kg/m^3)Salinity (PSU)SV (CM) (m/s)SV (DG)(m/s)

Copy the data into a separate tab so that the Raw data is not altered. Look through the data for any erroneous points and delete them. Take the average Density value and create a chart of the depth Vs the relevant Sound velocity. Ensure that the graph looks sensible and there is no large flyers left in the data.
