SPANISH DAY OUTOn Friday August 25, 15 lucky students from Years 7 and 8 travelled to Open Access College to attend the “Spanish Day Out”. They were a portion of 100 secondary students from all over the state who are also studying Spanish. After arriving fashionably late due to train delays, the students were thrown straight into a salsa lesson, where they quickly found their groove. We enjoyed churros and chocolate for “tapas” before splitting into smaller

groups to work on a range of different activities, including: Mexican tin art, maraca making, brain games, and Guatemalan weaving. After a delicious lunch of empanadas (Spanish pastry), we made piñatas before it was time to start the journey home. Thank you to the students who attended and set a fantastic example for our school. It was a great day filled with language and plenty of Spanish culture. Stay tuned for more Spanish events to come!

NAPLANIf you are a parent of a Year 7 or Year 9 student, hopefully by now you have received your child’s NAPLAN results for 2017. NAPLAN is a standardised test that looks at a child’s literacy and numeracy skills. As a school, our students achieved the following results:

Component % Yr 7 Students who achieved National Minimum

Standard

% Yr 9 Students who achieved National Minimum

Standard

Reading 89 77

Writing 77 58

Spelling 88 79

Grammar & Punctuation 84 76

Numeracy 98 85

As you can see from our results, we have some work to do in several areas, and we are committed as a school to continually reflect on our practice and intervention strategies to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve high growth in each component. If you have any questions regarding the NAPLAN tests or you have not yet received your child’s results (Yr 7 and Yr 9 students only), please contact us on 8325 5200.

HIGH HOPESHI EVERYONE,On Friday September 8, four people represented Seaford Secondary College at the City of Onkaparinga Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. The tickets for the event were donated by the Seaford Ecumenical Mission. This was a great opportunity for our College to attend a community event and two of our students (Jesse and Sophie) were wonderful ambassadors. The Mayor’s chosen charity was Red Frogs Australia and the founder, Andy Gourley, was the guest speaker. Andy shared the history behind Red Frogs Australia which developed when he identified a way to protect the youth at schoolies at the Gold

Coast in Queensland. He saw how the influence of alcohol and drugs was ruining young lives. To hear this story of how Allen’s Red Frogs lollies (as part of the Red Frog Australia program) are helping youth, you can follow this link to Andy’s TED talk. http://au.redfrogs.com/andy-gourley Red Frogs Australia now supports schoolies in all states except South Australia. Andy acknowledged the valuable work of Encounter Youth at Victor Harbor schoolies and congratulated them and the Green Team for the massive support they provide our youth. He encouraged us all with some tips to help us support our local youth:

What’s one thing you can do? Use what you have. It may not seem like much but your contribution can make a difference.

• Doing something is always better than doing nothing

• Learn the art of being second – champion others more than yourself

• Become the change you want to see, or just shut up!

• By ourselves we are limited, but working together we can make a difference

Culture is changed from the inside-out – modelling good values to our youth will show them a better way. Many thanks to Seaford Ecumenical Mission for the opportunity to attend this inspiring event.

ACTION DAY As part of the Safe Schools Initiative four students took part in an Action Day to build on their knowledge of our LGBTQI+ community and ways they can be inclusive and kind to all. This day was a fantastic opportunity for students of different schools across South Australia to talk about common issues and interests. This was also a time for students to rally together and discuss ways in which we as a school community can work together to reduce bullying and harassment and to ensure everyone feels safe and accepted.

Seaford Secondary College held a wonderful Wear It Purple Day! Students came together at lunchtime to celebrate our pride and individuality. We were fortunate to have the school band volunteer to play some amazing music as well. We cannot thank every student enough for getting involved in the day and showing how accepting Seaford Secondary College is to those around them.

KYOTO BOARD OF EDUCATION STUDY TOURAUGUST 2 - AUGUST 16

We once again welcomed the Kyoto Board of Education from Japan, who continues to request our school after the 2014 commendations by the Consul-General of Japan in our inaugural year. Our 4th year of hosting the 2-week Study Tour saw 17 students doing a mix of specialist classes and ESL with Ms. Julie Cooper. The students had fantastic experiences, including cooking iconic Australian Food, participating in a hair-raising science practical, showcasing their creative talent in Drama, painting Boomerangs and learning the basics of Football and Netball. It was great to see the support of our students in helping the Kyoto students throughout their lessons, and even better to see lasting friendships being formed. Along with the

traditional excursions to the Central Markets, Cleland Wildlife Park and Adelaide City, the Kyoto Students had an extremely comprehensive introduction to Australian life, culture and schooling over the two weeks. The conclusion of the Study Tour resulted in a graduation ceremony where the Japanese students performed a song for their host families, and said a sad farewell to their friends at Seaford Secondary College. We would like to thank all of the staff who continue to help and support these students with their expertise, and also acknowledge our students who volunteered to be buddies for the Kyoto students - Annaka, Rheana, Dawn, Tayla, Brittany, Jai, Quin, Steve, Krystal, Tahlia, Samantha, Isobel, Jazz, Lauren, Adrian, Lilli, Lily, Jemma, Amber-May. Their support, guidance and friendship not only goes a long way in making the experience for the International students more authentic and personable, but also allows our students to develop international friendships, that in many cases, last for years to come.

CHEONGJU STUDY TOUR AUGUST 1 –AUGUST 18

Now in our 2nd year, we welcomed 8 Year 7 students from Korea: Yujeong, Hoyoon, Seokhyun, Dahyeon, Yerin, Boram, Yujin and Dokyung. These outgoing and amazing young students joined our Year 7 classes and participated in mainstream subjects. Their friendly and

caring personalities allowed them to make many friendships over their time, often with our students teaching them Aussie culture and essential Aussie slang. Many tears were shed at their farewell celebration! We look forward to welcoming back the same study tour in 2018. A big thank you to our Year 7 teachers Ms Jacky Hiscock, Mr Brett Alcock, Ms Dani Gagliardi and Ms Jade Bester for welcoming them into their classes and supporting them throughout their time at Seaford Secondary College.

FAREWELL TO OUR FULL-TIME INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSWe would like to thank the following International students who have joined us at Seaford Secondary College in Term 2 and 3 and returned to their home country. They have each left a special impression with our school and will be dearly missed by their peers and friends. We wish them all the very best for their future, and hope they will visit us again one day. Jana and Sarah from GermanyHinako, Kaya, Momo and Momona from Japan

BECOME AN EXCHANGE STUDENT WITH SOUTHERN CROSS CULTURAL EXCHANGESouthern Cross Cultural Exchange (SCCE) is an Australian based, not for profit organisation that provides cultural exchanges for students between 14 and 19 years of age. SCCE was founded in 1983 and since then has exchanged over 17,000 students in and out of Australia! SCCE have exchanges available to over 19 different countries ranging from 2 months to 10 months in duration. We also have gap year programmes available. Going on an exchange is a once in a lifetime opportunity as you can only go while you are enrolled at school. Travelling as a tourist is fun but you will never have the feeling of being truly submersed into that culture and living as a family member in that country. SCCE offers an immersion program, where you live with a host family, go to school and immerse yourself in the local life, culture, community, language, food, festivals and everything that life has to offer a teenager in another country. Going on an exchange opens your whole world, gives you confidence, gives you belief in yourself and gives you the greatest sense of achievement. For more information please head to our website www.scce.com.au or phone toll free 1800 500 501. You can also direct your questions to Mr Adam Pearce, which they will forward to our SCCE representative.

HOST FAMILIES REQUIRED FOR UPCOMING RITSUMEIKAN STUDY TOUR FROM JAPAN - TERM 4We are proud to welcome back students from Ritsumeikan High School later in Term 4. We will be requiring new host families for these fantastic students for two weeks. Being a host family is an amazing experience; not only do you create lifelong friendships but you also open up the world to your

family and have a chance to visit some amazing places in Adelaide with them. Host families are also reimbursed $270 a week. If you are interested, please call the school on 83275200 or email [email protected]!

During the term 2 school holidays, as part of the DECD-Thai Ministry of Education partnership, I visited our sister school, Kantangpittayakorn. The school is located near Trang, a city 1-hour flight south of Bangkok and has approximately 1600 students. I spent a week in the school, teaching geography lessons and running professional development for the Thai teachers around the South Australian education system and Seaford Secondary

College. I also participated in various cultural activities including Thai cooking, art, dance, Thai boxing, flower making and music. It was a great experience and gave an insight into the cultural differences between our schools. We look forward to our continued partnership with Kantangpittayakorn School and are excited to welcome a Thai teacher from the Ministry of Education on September 15.

An ideal cure for 'nature deficit disorder'Safe exploration of a 54-hectare natural wonderland offers an ideal cure for 'nature deficit disorder’. The team at Woodhouse Activity Centre just so happen to be able to provide this particular tonic and have, again, accepted the challenge to pull the children of Adelaide away from the screen these school holidays and reconnect them with nature.

During National Science Week, we gave students the opportunity to participate in a Science quiz, and Daniel (S1) won a book full of scientific facts. Well done Daniel!

Congratulations to all of the students who participated and completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2017. These students made the effort to read 12 books between January and early September, which is not only a great way to support and improve literacy skills, but is also a great form of entertainment which can reduce stress and help improve memory and concentration. Those students who handed in their completed reading record will now go in the running to win a prize donated by the Friends of Seaford Library, and all students will receive their award before the end of the year.

BOOK WEEKDuring Book Week we conducted a scavenger hunt in the library for students, where they had to find clues in amongst the shelves and solve puzzles in order to piece together the answer. Team Samily (Sam and Emily from C1) worked hard to achieve the answer together and were the lucky winners drawn from all of the entries, walking away with a gift card each. Well done girls!

ESMART WEEKCity of Onkaparinga Libraries celebrated eSmart Week by promoting the smart, safe and responsible use

of online technology. For links to websites full of useful hints and tips, visit our online safety page at www.onkaparingacity.com/libraries via the digital resources link.
