In case of ire within buildings smoke and heat will spread through penetrations and joints, endangering residents and blocking escape paths. Fire protection solutions from Sika seal penetrations and joints and help restrict ire and smoke to where they occur for a certain time, allowing occupants to exit the building safely. Sika ire rated products and systems comply with the most relevant standards (EN, ETAG, UL, ASTM) in order to ensure the highest ire resistance.

It is important to distinguish two diferent types of ire testing for building materials:

    * For additional sub-classes for smoke development and occurrence of dripping see EN 13501-1

The reaction of building materials to ire is determined by exposing the single product in its uninstalled state to ire and heat. For example EN 13501-1 classiies how easily materials can catch ire, how smoke develops and if dripping occurs. It does not, however, provide any information or time about how long the product resists ire in a system.

́ Reaction to ire: How does the product react to an open lame? The reaction to ire is described by the combustibility, smoke development and dripping behaviour.

́ Fire resistance: How long can a product that is built into a ire protection system withstand the impact of ire? This is decribed by the resistance time during standardized ire tests.

For the ire resistance of a building only the combined resis-tance of the system individual components counts. For exam-ple a ire resistant door together with the ire resistant sealant and wall can hinder the spread of ire and smoke. Therefore ire resistant tests are much more important than the reaction of a product to a lame.

SIKA SOLUTIONS FULFILL THE HIGHEST STANDARDS

  • SEALING & BONDINGSIKA FIRE PROTECTION SOLUTIONS 5

There are many ire resistance testing standards for building materials or building elements. The most relevant for joint sealants and penetration seals are:

́ EN 1366: Fire resistance tests for service installations – Part 3: Penetration seals, Part 4: Linear joint seals

́ ETAG 026: Fire stopping and ire sealing products – Part 3: Linear joint and gap seals

́ UL 2079: Tests for ire resistance of building joint systems ́ ASTM E119: Fire tests of building construction and materials ́ BS 476-20: Fire resistance test for linear joints ́ AS 1530.4: Australian standard for ire rated joint sealants and penetration seals

These tests do not only include the sealant but an entire section of the building where the sealant is installed with a backing rod into a joint formed by a relevant building material – concrete in most cases.

Fire rated sealant (yellow), combined with

a standard PE backer rod (gray).

Standard sealant (gray), combined with a

    ire rated backer rod (yellow).

    Fire rated foam (yellow).

The performance of building materials or elements which are ire tested according to EN 1366-3 and/or EN 1366-4 are then classiied according to EN 13501-2. This means the achieved results from the testing are transferred into classes consider-ing various criteria, out of which two are relevant for linear joints and penetrations:

    ́ E – integrity separation function ́ I – thermal insulating separation function

EN 13501-2 classiies the sealants according to the times (15, 20, 30, etc.) in minutes they managed to resist the impact of ire in terms of either integrity and/or thermal insulation.

    FIRE RESISTANCE CLASSIFICATION

    E – integrity separating function

Integrity E is the capacity of a building element, when exposed to ire on one side, to prevent the passage of lames and hot gases to the unexposed side. There is no temperature limit on the ire averted side.

I – thermal insulating separation function

Thermal insulation is the capability of a building element to maintain its required thermal insulation separating function in case of ire (with a max. 180 ° temperature rise on the ire averted side).

FIRE RESISTANCE TESTS ACCORDING TO EN 1366-4

The resistance to ire for ire rated sealants is tested in simu-lated real-life situations as shown in the picture above. Joint sealants are always tested in a system together with other building materials ( e.g. concrete).

In order to cover as many cases as possible our products are tested with various substrates, in various dimensions and conigurations. For details please see the tables on the follow-ing pages.

Sika® Backer Rod Fire is available in seven diferent nominal diameters (see y-axis of the diagram on page 12). Refer to the number at the right edge of the yellow bar in the diagram, as each diameter of Sika® Backer Rod Fire may only be used for nominal joint widths below this value. The number at the left edge of the bar in the diagram refers to the lower nominal joint width limit, since Sika® Backer Rod Fire can only be compressed to a certain degree. For example, for a nominal 60 mm diameter Sika® Backer Rod Fire, the lower limit threshold nominal joint width is 40 mm, and the maximum nominal joint width is 51 mm.

In case of ire in a tunnel, the concrete can be exposed to extreme temperatures within a very short time. This heat causes high vapor pressure within the concrete that fractures and destroys it from the inside. Sikacrete®-213 F is a spray-applied mortar providing insulating layers, which protect the load-bearing structural concrete from high temperatures. Both of these pre-batched mortars are classed as passive ire protection systems and are applied by the wet-spray process.Sikacrete®-213 F is a ire protection mortar with exceptional heat insulation properties, applied in thin layers to provide reliable ire protection for concrete structures. The material is straightforward and easy to apply, with efective insulation being achieved with relatively low quantities and thickness of the material.

Sikacrete®-213 F is a ire protection mortar with high com-pressive strength and durability. This mortar is also designed to be frost resistant and is used in tunnels with high exposure stresses – such as lower temperatures, damp environments and abrasion from frequent cleaning.

    Advantages

́ Thin-layer system ́ High insulation ́ Ready-to-use mortars ́ Easy and fast application ́ Low material consumption ́ Tested according to RWS, ISO 834 and HCinc ́ High durability ́ Coatable with Sikagard-Wallcoat

Sika® Unitherm® and Sika® Pyroplast® are ire protection coatings that are applied on building materials like steel, wood, concrete and cables. Under the impact of heat the surface of the coating softens and the coating swells to form a foam. The originally millimeter-thin coating converts into a centi-meter-thick, micro-porous foam that insulates the substrate against heat.

For safe evacuation of the building in case of ire, ire protec-tion regulations require that the structural construction ele-ments of a building are efectively protected from losing their load-bearing stability for a certain time.

FIRE PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR LOAD BEARING STRUCTURES

    STEEL

Steel structures do not burn but can lose their load bearing capability and static stability under the impact of ire and heat within a few minutes. The activated ire protection coating delays the steel structure reaching the critical temperature of 500°.

́ Sika has several products for steel protection coatings in various colors. ́ Sika Steel S: Solvent based coating for exterior steel structures ́ Sika Steel W: Water based coating for interior steel structures ́ Sika® Unitherm® Platinum: Two component epoxy coating for exterior and interior steel structures

    Wood

Wood is a natural building material with a multitude of uses in construc-tion. However, wood is lammable and especially when used in public build-ings needs to be protected against ire. Sika® Pyroplast® inhibits or delays inlammation of the wood surface and hinders the spreading of ire due to limited access to oxygen. Sika ire protection coatings combine highest protection with esthetic advantages and do not afect the natural beauty of the wood.

    Concrete and cable

Fire protection for concrete is used where a ire protection retroit is necessary due to change of use or inventory of a building. Cable ire protection prevents spread of lames, drastically reduces the burning rate and lowers the lammability of the cable insulation. The so- called fuse efect is terminated.
