In 1988, on the eve of a two decade civil war, Somalia’s authoritarian ruler

Siad Barre launched punishing air strikes on the north of the country,

known today as Somaliland, in response to agitations for independence.

The bombing leveled the entire city. Barre targeted Radio Hargeisa to

prevent any kind of central communication system that could organize

a resistance.

With the attack imminent, a few brave radio operators and dedicated

vanguards of Somali culture knew the archives, containing over half

a century of Somali music had to be preserved. Thousands upon

thousands of cassette tapes and master reels were quickly removed from

the soon-to-be targeted buildings. They were dispersed to neighboring

countries like Djibouti and Ethiopia, and buried deep under the ground to

withstand even the most powerful airstrikes.

“We buried them in the ground so the bomb’s won’t hit,” one former

leading journalist with Radio Hargeisa told us.

These audio artifacts were excavated and recalled from their foreign

shelters only very recently. Some of those recordings are now kept safe

in the 10,000-strong cassette tape archive of the Red Sea Foundation,

the largest collection of Somali cassettes in the world, in Somaliland’s

capital, Hargeisa. The Ostinato Records team digitized a large portion

of the archive, distilling 15 songs that reveal the panoramic diversity of

styles and sophistication of Somali musicianship.

This compilation seeks to revive the rightful image, history, and identity of

the Somali people, detached from war, violence, piracy, and the specter

of a persistent threat. These tracks should serve as a necessary starting

point.

Rooted in Colombia and based in New York, Combo Chimbita lives in

the future. Powerhouse vocalist Carolina Oliveros, synth and bassist

night residencies at Barbès in Brooklyn. Exploring Afro-Caribbean styles

Prolific UK producer ELWD (pronounced Ellwood) is back with his latest

beat odyssey All Good Things. The new LP continues his trademark lo-fi,

soul-drenched production.

Not one to follow conventional song structures or methods, ELWD

focuses more on loops blended with live instrumentation and abstract

directions, to evoke a feeling that ends whenever it feels right. Sometimes

merging two beats into one, his dynamic approach gives every project a

fresh flow that has you engaged from start to finish.

Opener ‘dreamdntsleep’ sets the soulful spirit instantly, the common

thread throughout the record’s narrative. ‘inbloom’ continues this upbeat

feeling, with heavy hitting drum breaks and mashed up samples. But

things get gradually more mellow and then eerie towards the end of side

one, rolling effortlessly into side two with a reflective and conscious edge.

The degraded saxophone on ‘lottalivin’ gives the melody a more haunting

feel while still remaining infectious and ‘yemaybe’ features a distant

contemplative voice over live keys and drums, feeding furtherinto the

album’s unique theme and direction.

Ambient music also plays a part in ELWD’s influences and closing tracks

‘newcolours’ and ‘noicecream’ offer weightless, meditational pieces that

end the album on an optimistic note.

musician’s unique style as a critical part of the overall sound. Atop

airtight yet comfortably loose drum and bass grooves often reminiscent

of 90s R&B and Hip-Hop, layers of harmonically complex piano, organ,

and Fender Rhodes create a lushness associated with jazz that rarely

integrates into pop music so tastefully. Adding flairs of excitement

throughout, the horns bring their powerful chops to the forefront when

appropriate without ever stepping on the vocals, which float effortlessly

Transmitting crucial beats from Burlington, the Vermont-based

producers Es-K and Loupo have crafted a smooth, introspective

long-player for the Cold Busted label titled Symbiosis. Holland-born

Es-K (Essential Knowledge) is known for his monthly Spontaneous

sitting) and his vital 2016 album Passages. Fellow VT rhythm-

Melody Soul label named Good Company. This new collaborative

styles of these two talents over the course of ten tracks. The result

is deep and meaningful as well as groovy and ‘headz approved,’

showcasing the duo’s penchant for envelope pushing in terms of

atmosphere, melody, and rhythm.

From the opening chords of “Aqua” – reminiscent of expansive works

from the likes of Lonnie Linston Smith – Symbiosis sets itself apart in

the realm of beat-conscious production projects. Sparkling Rhodes

piano, a winding jazz bass line, and an overall pensive vibe lead

midway into a funky drum part, which almost seems curiously added

as an afterthought. The fusion-istic instrumentation and understated,

downbeat rhythm flavor continue throughout Symbiosis, shining on

cool cuts like “Road To”, the tough, slow motion stepper “Gavel”,

“TwoTone” with its jerky beats and film noir attitude, and “CooLit”s

It was to be expected that, sooner or later, someone would give recognition

to these two key artists, Roy Panton and Yvonne Harrison, central to

understanding Jamaican music and its evolution. For some time, all over

the world, thousands of followers and lovers of these Jamaican rhythms

have tried, sometimes with luck and some with dismay, to get some of the

recordings presented here today on vinyl, in what is the first compilation

dedicated to Roy Panton & Yvonne Harrison.

Roy Panton started his musical career at an early age, and after

finishing school, decided to take his passion for music and the stage

more seriously. In late 1950, Roy and Stranger Cole auditioned for Duke

Reid. They subsequently recorded their first work titled “Freedom Land /

Adam & Eve” under the name “The Rovers”, a name that they would not

be using again given that, after the recording, each went their separate

ways. Unfortunately, the recording never saw the light of day.

Roy recorded some songs with Monty Morris in the studio of C.C. Dood.

So, by suggestion of “Sir Coxone”, Roy Panton and Millie Small started

singing together and became one of the most prolific duos of the island,

leaving behind many recordings under the name “Roy and Millie”. Some

of these you can find on this LP. Unfortunately, after Millie’s departure to

England under the management of Chris Blackwell, Roy found himself

without a partner. However, this should not be for long.

In the autumn of 1962, discovered by TIP TOP Label’s Lynden Pottinger,

Yvonne and Roy met for the first time at the West Indies Studios (WIRL)

of Edward Seaga and recorded their first ever single, “Two Roads” with

the B-side “Join together”. The magnificent performance of both, and

perfect compatibility of their voices “joint together” Roy and Yvonne in

what would be one of the most requested duets in the country.

Monika Johnson, better known as Doreen Shaffer, is arguably

the most active original Jamaican singer of the last 50 years. A

founding member of The Skatalites since 1963, she has toured the

world countless times, taking the legacy of Ska, Rocksteady and

Reggae music to the most remote parts of the planet, from the most

underground venues to the most important festivals.

Her work at the head of The Skatalites is probably the one that will

consecrate her and for which she will be remembered for centuries,
