Research Interests
The molecular processes underpinning CNS inflammation. Uncovering of cellular and molecular actions
of inflammatory players with key interests in;
the communication of systemic inflammation with CNS inflammation, by epithelial and BBB
diffusion/invasion/signaling, or by peripherally induced mediators acting on PNS afferent nerves,
or neurons of circumventricular organs;
the role of glial cells (microglia, astrocytes & oligodendrocytes) in CNS inflammation and
disease progression;
the neuropharmacology of CNS cells, the potentials of agonists/antagonists acting on
neurons/synapses/glial cells in combating disease onset &/ progression.
The roles of biochemical interactions within CNS cells, how energy is utilized, and the
influences these processes have on healthy and diseased brains.

I also have a great interest in music. I play the cajon and guitar, and sing occasionally. I was a
member of a local band playing local gigs in 2013. https://soundcloud.com/unfinished-business-
band. I attended lessons at the Tullamore Academy of Music and sang the bass line in the TAoM
Chamber Choir during 2011 and 2012.
I love to travel, to learn of, experience and understand other cultures and ways of life.
