What are Helical PilesA helical pile is an extendable steel, deep foundation system. Consisting of helical bearing plates welded to a central steel shaft. Load is transferred from the shaft to the soil through these bearing plates.
Sections are joined with bolted couplings.
Installation depth is limited only by soil density and practicality based on economics.
The bearing plates are true helical shapes, the helices do not auger into the soil but rather screws down with minimal soil disturbance.

Helical Pile Deep Foundation Features:• Use in both compression and tension• Load immediately after installation• Pre‐engineered & manufactured. Minimum quality
control concerns • Pile integrity measurable during installation• Minimal equipment and crew needed for construction• No excavation or soil disturbance• Allows minimum or no concrete use• Many options for pile caps• Install in almost any weather condition• Install in high water table• Install quickly• Smaller equipment and crew means more economical
• Much more than a choice of last resort.

International Building Code Chapter 18 -Soils and Foundations • HELICAL PILE. Manufactured steel deep foundation
element consisting of a central shaft and one or more helical bearing plates. A helical pile is installed by rotating it into the ground. Each helical bearing plate is formed into a screw thread with uniform defined pitch.
ICC AC358 Acceptance Criteria for Helical Foundation Systems and Devices• ICC AC358 -1.4.2 Helical Foundation System: A factory
manufactured steel foundation designed to resist axial compression, axial tension, and/or lateral loads from structures, consisting of a central shaft with one or more helical-shaped bearing plates, extension shafts, and a bracket that allow for attachment to structures. The shafts with helix bearing plates are screwed into the ground by application of torsion and the shaft is extended until a desired depth or a suitable soil or bedrock bearing stratum is reached.
Acceptable per Building Code

Why us instead of ACIP or Driven Piles? Faster installation, cuts schedule substantially No cure time required; Immediately loadable. Installable in tight access and low clearances Much lower mobilization cost Minimal equipment and crew needed. No spoils or
rebar crews required. No installation vibration concerns Install in any weather & site conditions Not dependent on 3rd party mat’l & crews No spoils & wasted materials disposal cost Piles removable and reusable for temporary
installations

Helical pile ExamplesJOB PERFORMED THIS WEEK – New Truck Canopy
Beat out shallow spread footers: Price & TIME TO INSTALL (3 Day vs 3 weeks). 1 day to survey, 1 day to hydro excavate for underground lines and 1 day pile installation.
NO INTERRUPTION IN TRUCK UNLOADING OPERATION

Helical pile ExamplesJOB PERFORMED THIS WEEK – New Truck Canopy
Readily moved from pile to pile to stay out of way for the trucks.
NO INTERRUPTION IN TRUCK UNLOADING OPERATION
PILES STRADDLED DISCOVERED PIPE AND CONDUIT AT MINIMAL COST. WOULD HAVE BEEN LARGE CHANGE ORDER FOR SPREAD FOOTER.

Helical pile ExamplesDuck Camp in undisclosed location!!
“From pile installation to in the dry in 3 weeks. Pretty amazing.” owner
Height above grade changed three times during proposal. Required structural engineer assistance to allow for lateral loads and buckling evaluation.
Best choice for multiple reasons: Concrete trucks couldn’t get to site, soil expansive, time crunch on schedule, inaccessible to large equipment, duck season just around the corner.

We’re Not Just Commercial and Industrial! Use us for RESIDENTIAL
• Invest in helical piles up front and avoid expensive repairs later.
• Expansive Soils – Helicals are best solution
![Page 18: SEAoAR 2015 Conference](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022070509/589dd4511a28abf45d8b69d3/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Expansive Soils• Helicals are Best
Solution• Recommendations
– Install single helix or assure all helix can be installed in stable soil.
– Minimum installation torque 4,000 FT-LB, all helices
– Use of void form under pile caps, grade beams
![Page 19: SEAoAR 2015 Conference](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022070509/589dd4511a28abf45d8b69d3/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Shale, Rock or other hard layers
• End bearing on pile is acceptable.
• Must be evaluated if there will be tension loads.
• Is hard layer capable of supporting loads?
![Page 20: SEAoAR 2015 Conference](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022070509/589dd4511a28abf45d8b69d3/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
How Long Do They Last???
• Depends on soil pH and resistivity
• >75 years is common.
40 yrs 80 yrs 160 yrs shaft life (1/8” loss)
16 yrs 40 yrs 160 yrs shaft life (1/8” loss)

Lateral Loads Analysis & Management• Lateral Load Management;
– Shaft section selection– Transitioned piles– Concrete/Steel Caps –Passive
soil resistance– Soil stabilizition, admix– Battered piles
