    A Message from:

    Serge

AntoniniSenior Vice President, South East Asia

& Pacic, Industry & Facilities Division

    Dear Colleagues

    Performance

    UpdateQuarterly Highlights

It has been an exciting Q2

for us in SEAP. I would like to

    recognize our newly acquired

    companies, CKM and Sievert

    for their contribution to the

    results of this quarter. However,

much work needs to be done to

    improve our margin and keep

    costs down. Cash ow remains

very much on our radar. Itsshadow continues to haunt us

    this quarter.

On the safety front, we have one

injury reported in PAC, I would

like to thank all managers for

    their leadership regarding HSE.

That said, there were no Near-

    Hit reports raised this month.

    Improved Near-Hit reporting

(like First-Aid cases) is a must for

    preventing a Near-Hit situation

    developing into a more serious

    accident or injury. Therefore, Id

    ask everyone who encounters

a Near-Hit event to report it so

actions can be taken to reduce

the likelihood of an injury and to

    improve our safety, as Safety

    is our responsibility.

On a lighter note, ofces in

    Singapore and Indonesia will

be relocating to new premises.Renovations are ongoing and

well be glad to report their new

look in Q3. Relocation is one

of the ways we manage our

    business cost.

By end of Q2, our SEAP

    headcount is 1,268. We

    have brought on board many

    professionals from diverse

elds. A few of them have been

    featured in this publication.

    As a QHSE company, we

    continue to put a huge

    emphasis on the environment.

    World Environment Day was

    celebrated in all countries

    across SEAP. Staff planted

    trees, conducted environment

briengs to the public and took

    pledges to not use single-use

    plastic containers.

Sievert remains a strong partnerin our NDT strategy. This is

    especially so in SEA. The

    diversity of SEAP will ensure

we have many more stories to

tell in the publications to come.

Please join me as we continue

    our journey ahead.

    Revenue

    Performance in

    line with Budget

    We posted a revenue

    performance in line with

    Group expectations in

    H1 2014, this has been

    achieved thanks to a strong

    performance in Australia

    beating its budget by 10%.

    Compared to the same

    period last year, revenue

    was 18% higher. This is

attributable to the robustperformance by the

    Pacic region as well as

    the contributions from

    our newly acquired CKM

    Consultants Pte. Ltd. and

    Sievert Veritas Pte. Ltd.

    Despite increasing our

    revenue, our operating

    prot has decreased by

    5% year-on-year, we have

    some catching-up to do in

order to close the gap with

    our budget, achievement of

    the Forecast is a minimum.

    We need to reinforce

    nancial discipline in

    watching our costs while

    achieving revenue growth

    and we need to continue

    to improve our cash ow

signicantly. Cash ow is akey nancial performance

    indicator closely watched

by Head Ofce as well as

    the investor community.

    We need everyones efforts

to help ensure that we are

    paid punctually by our

    customers for the services

we provide. It is the only

    way to move forward with

    condence.

    Locally developed technology gains

    overseas markets

    Feature

    Article

    ShafTest, Bureau Veritas

    technology for testing critical

    shafts and pins, is now

    successful on an international

    scale. ShafTest has been the

    inspection method of choice

    of Australias largest mining

    companies for many years,

but is now being employedoverseas to manage the

    reliability of wind turbines.

    Cracking in shafts can

    lead to catastrophic failure,

    placing health and safety of

personnel at risk, as well as

    causing collateral equipment

    damage and unplanned

    downtime. ShafTest is a

    portable ultrasonic aw

    detection system for

    determining the condition of

    shafts and pins, helping to

    prevent these failures.

    Dr Guy Cotterill, ShafTest

    technology co-inventor and

    ShafTest services manager

    at Bureau Veritas, recently

led a campaign to inspect 32in-service wind turbine main

    shafts in Southern China. The

    towers were approximately

12 years old and one of the

    towers had failed without

    warning. Of 32 shafts tested,

    2 shafts showed strong

    evidence of cracking.

    From the experience in

    China, Bureau Veritas saw

the potential to expand to the

    European market - the biggest

    wind power producers in the

    world.

    The advantage of the

    European market is that

most wind farms are a short

    ight away from our ofces.

    ShafTest personnel can

complete multiple projectsover a shorter period of time,

    Dr Cotterill explained.

Bureau Veritas has since introduced ShafTest to Spain for the inspection of 12 wind towers.

Bureau Veritas European wind power division is now working with the Spainish client and

other operators to design a new service to assess and prolong the remaining life of wind

    towers.

A home-grown technology, ShafTest was developed by a team at Bureau Veritas and

the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and was supported by the

Australian Coal industry. Dr Cotterill, also graduating from the university of Newcastle with a

PhD in physics, led the R&D effort that produced the ShafTest system. He is now responsible

for diffusing the technology throughout Australia and internationally by leveraging Bureau

Veritas teams in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

On May 31, late in the evening, our colleagues - Boon-Cheng Tan and FredericMaury - decided to go that extra mile and braced themselves for a full-edged 42km marathon in Singapore. Together, they ran the marathon along with an estimated30,000 runners in the heat and humidity of the equatorial night.

They started full of energy and hope, and both crossed the nish line, with soremuscles, exhaustion and yet smiles on their face. Thumbs-up for the runners!

    Proud sponsors

    and supporters of

    Annette Edmondson

    (Pro Australian Cyclist)

    and all that she has

    achieved over the last

    2.5 years

    CongratulationsAnnette!

BV AUS Has Our Very Own

    Commonwealth Games Champion!

Read About Our BV Australia Sponsored (Pro Australian Cyclist)

Annette Edmondsons Recent Gold Medal Winning Experience.

    The Commonwealth Games were

absolutely unreal. I went into the

racing slightly unsure of my form,

due to trialling a different form of

    preparation leading into the racing.

We did a two month training campwith Cycling Australia including time

spent at altitude, which meant that

we had to alter training slightly to

    ensure adequate recovery.

I was very nervous before my rst

event, but just had to trust in the

coaches and the work that I had

done. To my relief, I qualied 2nd

    fastest in the Individual Pursuit,

which meant that I was in the Gold/

Silver nal that night. I unfortunately

couldnt step up that night and had

to settle for silver, of which I still,

    was absolutely thrilled about. Of

course you aim for gold, but I knew

I had given it my absolute best

    and couldnt have done anything

    differently to change the outcome.

I was lucky to share the podium

with my teammate Amy Cure in 3rd,

whilst my little brother Alex also

managed to get silver in the mens

    Individual Pursuit that night, which

was so lovely (and happened to be

an outcome of high interest to the

    Australian media!)

The following day I became a

    Commonwealth Games champion.

This was a dream come true. I

had won a 40-lap scratch race

with the help of my two Australian

teammates, Amy Cure and MelissaHoskins (Amy also managed to

hold on for 2nd!) I was absolutely

ecstatic. I have won a few silver and

    bronze medals before, but have

never won Gold at such a level. This

was a very special moment that I

    will treasure forever.

This was the rst time in a couple

of years that Ive really felt satised

after a major competition. It was

such a relief to be a ble to nish off

a hard training block and be able

to celebrate results I was genuinely

    happy with.

I had four days off with a few days

    out celebrating with the Australian

team, before heading up to Northern

Scotland to spend time with my

family. There was no time to muck

around however, I had to get back

onto the road and prepare for the

second half of my road season,

    racing with Orica-AIS in Europe.

I am currently racing the inaugural

Ladies Tour of Norway and will be

targeting the team time trial at the

Sweden World Cup on the 22nd of

August. Following that my goals are

to make the team time trial team

and bring home gold with Orica-AIS

at the road world championships in

Ponteferrada, Spain at the end ofSeptember.

It will be tough trying to settle into

road racing again after spending so

much time in the velodrome, but Im

    looking forward to the challenge!
