Analysis how The Indonesian

news paper, Koran Tempo

(2010 editions) represent

Indonesian terrorism

This study tries to search how

media linking with an act of

terrorism, especially to study how

media represent terrorism

( Indonesia’s Islamic

fundamentalist) in their news and

writtings. The Exploitations of

media for terrorism activity,

propaganda and tactics how to

make fear, occurs everywhere ,but

In indonesia the situation is very

different

This paper tries to analysis how The

Indonesian news paper, Koran Tempo (Jan

2010- Desember 2010 editions), represent

Indonesian terrorism with Theo Van

Leeuwen „s Discourse analysis.

Theo introduce some important concepts,

exclusion and inclusion to represent social

actor in discourse

Representations include and exclude social

actors to suit their interest and purpose in

relations to the readers for whom they are

intended.

In this study, these texts, draws on

representation of the social practice of

terrorism activity, especialy for „actor of

terrorism like Abu Bakar Ba‟asyir‟ and Jamaah

Ansharut Tauhid (JAT).

This organization was formed by Abu Bakar

Ba‟asyir on 27 July 2008 in Solo Central Java

Indonesia

The definition of terrorism in this paper refer to Norris

concept. Terrorism is a method or tactic involving

systematic coercive intimidation, including the threat or use

of violence in the destruction of property or physical harm

to persons used as a mechanism of control

This process is exemplied by the use of

sabotage ,destructive riots,hijackings,

assassinations ,kidnappings, arson,

mass poisonings ,torture, rape,

bombings, and unlawful imprisonment

designed to instill fear,insecurity,and

anxiety among its target population

. ( Norris, 2003 :6).

Indeed although researchers suggest that terrorists

spread public fear in order to create a powerful

bargaining tool, Long (1990: 5) argues that

terrorists often “use the unreasonable fear and the

resulting political disaffection it has generated

among the public to intimidate governments into

making political concessions in line with its political

goals.

The media plays an especially critical role in

framing and amplifying the effects of terrorism

and they give special attention to its impact on

psychological responses to terrorism.

According to Hoffman (1998 in Norris, 2003:

256) terrorism goes so far as to equate the

birth of international terrorism with the

introduction of the first TV satellite in the late

1960s. Media reactions to the events of 9/11

demonstrate the pervasive broadcast and

rebroadcast of visual images following a terrorist

attack

militant cleric Abubakar Ba'asyir for allegedly that many

acts terrorism in some regions in Indonesia including in

Aceh . Tempo newspaper also represent Ba‟asyir‟s

ideology that is explicitly against democracy. .Due to the

paper represent Ba‟asyir as moslem figure –consider

So far, according Ba‟asyir Indonesian muslims were wrong, because

they believe in Pancasila and abandon the Right of The holly Quran. But

in this news gaining process Koran Tempo did not give accurate facts

put in a meaningful context, Koran Tempo Journalists did not rely on a

professional discipline for verifying information and only, directly just

right” is the foundation upon which everything else is built –

context, interpretation, comment, criticism, analysis and debate

• The larger truth, over time, emerges from this forum.The

identity of Ba‟asyir as leaders of terrorist network is not

accompanied by strong evidence. It‟s mean alleged this is

not so strong. Police can only explain that his side still gather

data and evidence , but the police not carelessly take and

securing people without evidence of the involvement of the

person in the case of terrorism. Koran Tempo Journalists tend

unfair and only defending the interests of the police.

CONCLUSION

• From study of the text existing , can be found that most

news terrorism presented by a newspaper tempo very

ignoring journalistic values which puts forward the

consideration.

• Proven when the information about the incident or events

terrorismKoran Tempo tempo more trust in a claim and

the opinion of an institution or the body that authorized as

the police and Detasemen Khusus 88 ( special board

contra terrorism in Indonesia).

Cover both sides

• Even if tempo claiming self as new champions of journalism who is regarded as journalism advocacy Tempo should appreciate journalistic ethics . Because, Tempo newspaper is part of mass media that learning and understand how the rule about reporting that cover both sides

• in the news about terrorism issues associated with Ba‟aasyir, no apparent efforts to this newspapers due to display the fact a balanced . There is a tendency that tempo newspaper lay on only source in one direction that is a police source , and as if anything the fact or opinion from the police is the only truth that no need to be observed again if this is a lie or mere engineering.
