The 2018 Apollo Bay Seafood Festival coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Apollo Bay Fishermen’s Co-Op. This is exciting as it remains one of only three remaining operational fishing co-operatives in Victoria.

This year’s Festival marks a new beginning. We are excited to present you a new festival format, extended to feature a core program that includes Off The Hook, Harbour Day and Conversations On The Edge; three new events that endeavour to profile those who actively share our vision to champion the spirit of our local fishing community, the world-class seafood sourced locally from our waters, and the rugged beauty of our coastal town.

You’ll notice that we have relocated the festival from its original grounds on the grassy foreshore, to the new location at the Apollo Bay Harbour.

Be captivated, provoked and inspired as you explore this unique festival of events programmed in response to this year’s Festival theme, Seas The Day. Dine with 200 other food lovers at Off The Hook, a shared seafood celebration prepared by MoVida’s Frank Camorra.

Meet the local fishermen and taste the seafood straight from the source at Harbour Day, Saturday’s open day at the Apollo Bay Harbour. Get your hands dirty at one of the cooking workshops scattered throughout town. Meet the fishermen at Conversations On The Edge. Or catch your breath at the end of your weekend over locally distilled spirits at Whisky Wind-Down.

However you choose to spend your weekend, Seas The Day!

from the mayor from the chamber

The Apollo Bay Chamber of Commerce is very proud of our Seafood Festival. This will be the 7th year the Chamber has conducted it.

The format has this year undergone a lot of changes. They will take it to a new and exciting level.

We have a new festival director, Rebekah Malherbe. And supporting her a new committee.

They have been working with enormous enthusiasm and creativity. The program outlined here is the product of much work on their behalf.

We are so fortunate that our community members get involved the way they do.

We are particularly excited that for the first time the main event on the Saturday will be at the harbour. Its rightful place!

Our fishing industry has for so long been at the core of Apollo Bay’s commerce and community.

We look forward to welcoming our locals and visitors.

Enjoy!

John Gorman President, Apollo Bay Chamber of Commerce

Apollo Bay’s identity is synonymous with seafood, dating back to before European settlement when the Southern Ocean’s bounty sustained our nation’s first people. The Port of Apollo Bay is one of three working harbours in Victoria and generates approximately $6.5 million a year, making it a significant primary industry employer. With a proud history of resilient and resourceful fishermen and women in the region, the Apollo Bay Seafood Festival is a wonderful celebration of this seaside past, present and also the future - an event that brings people together in the name of all things piscatorial, and therefore delicious. The seafood caught in the cool, clear and clean local waters deservedly carries a reputation for being some of the finest in the world; it’s easy to see why some of our best local and Australian chefs love to join us at this festival.Go behind the scenes and see what happens when fish comes fresh off the boat; meet the producers and taste the region’s magnificent food, wine and seafood; sit down to dinner prepared by a celebrity chef or don an apron and learn how to prepare your own latest catch – perhaps even learn a sea shanty or two!If you’re visiting for the first time, or ‘The Bay’ is your backyard, I extend a warm welcome to all and wish you an enjoyable weekend at the Apollo Bay Seafood Festival.

Cr Joe McCracken Mayor, Colac Otway Shire

I am delighted to welcome gourmet food lovers, families and fishing enthusiasts alike to the 2018 Apollo Bay Seafood Festival. Since 2012, the festival has celebrated Apollo Bay’s fishing community, its world-class local catch and its stunning coastal shores, drawing thousands of visitors each year. Our pristine Victorian waters are the bread basket of our state – providing our world renowned dining scene and fresh markets with local sustainable seafood. They also provide a big boost to regional communities and businesses, thanks to the hard work of our professional fishers. Events like these mean serious business for our regional visitor economy, which is why the Victorian Government is proud to support the festival through the Regional Events Fund. It’s just part of our strategy to grow Victoria’s enviable events calendar, attracting more visitors to our regions. This year, the festival’s flagship event “Harbour Day” will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Apollo Bay Fishermen’s Co-op – one of few remaining in Victoria. The new three-day format will also include a seafood feast for 200 people hosted by chef Frank Camorra of iconic restaurant MoVida, as well as family and cultural activities, workshops and educational forums led by experts in sustainability, marine biology and food writing. While you are visiting Apollo Bay, I encourage you to explore the Great Ocean Road and discover the best of everything regional Victoria has to offer. Hon. John Eren Minister, Tourism & Events

off the hookOfficially opening the Festival, MoVida’s Frank Camorra brings his exuberant energy to the table over a shared seafood feast.

Spain’s meandering coastline, reminiscent of our Great Ocean Road, ensures that fresh fish and shellfish are ubiquitous elements of the Spanish table. With more than a nod to Spanish coastal cuisine, Off The Hook celebrates the catch of our local region.

Embrace the freedom of Spanish character over this long-table style dinner of four courses with matched local wines.

Please note, dietary requirements can only be catered for if advised at time of ticket purchase.

Nose-to-tail cooking aims to not take the life of a single animal that won’t be prized and treasured. Very much celebrated in Mediterranean culture, yet rarely valued in Australian cuisines, the octopus (predominantly a commercial fishing bycatch product in Victoria) could and should be better appreciated for its great culinary potential.
