Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Jan 13-15 The significant and complex
relationship between the African
American and Jewish
Communities of America includes
the friendship among Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr, Rabbi Abraham
Joshua Heschel, and Kivie Kaplan,
whose story we heard from
Kivie’s son Ed Kaplan, our 2015
Alfred Gross Scholar. You may
wish to observe Dr. King’s
January 15 birthday by
participating in one of the events
of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Celebration Organization of
Sussex County during its 26th
Annual Commemorative Weekend
Celebration, January 13-15. Its
timely theme is “Speak Up! Let
Us Not Be Silent About Things
That Matter.” For more
information, contact SJC member
George Beckerman preferably by
January 4 at 202-903-5060 or
Meet Religious Leader Candidate, Rabbi Hannah Laner, Jan 20-21 Saturday, January 20, will be
another very special Shabbat. We
will be welcoming Rabbi Hannah
Laner, the second of two
candidates for our Religious
Leader position, who will be
leading most of the worship that
morning. Following the service,
there will be an extended Kiddush
where congregants will have an
opportunity to talk with her. That
afternoon, from 3:30 – 5:30, SJC
will host a meet and greet for
another opportunity to talk with
Rabbi Hannah. The afternoon will
end with Havdalah. On Sunday,
she will visit the Religious School
to meet with some of our young
people and their parents. Plan to
be at SJC on Saturday morning or
afternoon to meet one of our
candidates to be the next SJC
Religious Leader.
Federation Shabbat Jan 26 Each year, Jewish Federation of
DE sponsors a Shabbat dinner and
worship service for the entire
state’s Jewish community. Several
SJC members have attended in the
past, and had a wonderful time.
The event will be held on Friday,
January 26, at Beth Shalom, 1801
Baynard Boulevard, Wilmington,
Delaware. Contact Beth Shalom at
302-654-4462 to obtain the dinner
cost and to make your dinner
reservations.
If you will be attending, please let
Cheryl Fruchtman know at
[email protected] or 302-
542-8094 or so she can see if car
pools can be arranged.

Co-President’s Message - Buddy Feldman
At our December annual meeting,
we elected 3 Board members and
reported to the community about
what is happening at SJC. Please
see articles on pages 3 and 6 that
summarize the reports made about
the religious leader search and a
possible building expansion. After
the meeting, the Board chose the
officers for 2018. See the listing at
left for these officers and a
complete list of the new Board.
During Saturday morning Shabbat
services on December 16, the new
Board was installed. Marsha Davis
joined the Board, and Alyssa
Simon and Stanley Silverblatt
started their second 3-year term.
Thanks were extended to outgoing
Board member, Allyn Fruman,
and to Mike Saltzman as he
finished his term as co-president.
I want to say a special thanks to
Allyn. She and Harvey are
founding members of Seaside. She
has always made it her goal to
promote Seaside’s best interests.
At Board meetings, Allyn could be
counted on to summarize our
discussions into concise terms that
made the Board’s decision making
easier.
Marsha will be a board member-
at-large. Marsha is also the chair
of the Adult Education
Committee. Marsha’s expertise
and innovations will bring fresh
approaches to Seaside’s programs.
There are not enough words to
express our appreciation for all
that Mike has done to promote
Seaside’s success. He will
continue to serve as a board
member-at-large so that we will
still be able to benefit from his
ideas and his wry sense of humor.
Please Pay 2018 Membership Dues SJC’s membership year is the
calendar year, which means that
2018 membership dues of $180
per adult are now due. An invoice
for the dues is included on page
11, and we will also be mailing
members invoices in mid-
January. We rely on our members
to pay their annual dues at this
time of year, and we thank you in
advance for making your dues
payment this month. Thanks also
to those who have already paid
their dues.
You can pay by mailing a check or
paying online. Instructions for
both methods are included in the
invoice.
SJC offers a wide variety of
educational, worship and social
activities to meet our members’
needs. We, in turn, depend on
your membership dues to operate.
We welcome all who want to join
regardless of ability to pay. If you
cannot pay full dues, please use
the invoice to pay what you can,
let us know it's for the year, and
we’ll gladly include you as a
member. No explanation is
needed. If you have done this in
the past, please do it again each
year where an offset or payment
plan is needed.
Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an
SJC event but thought you couldn't
afford it? SJC policy is to work with
you if you have a financial hardship.
Please contact the treasurer to
confidentially discuss your situation.
Minutes of SJC Board Minutes are available to interested
members after the Board approves
them. Copies may be obtained by
contacting our Secretary.

Membership Committee Meeting, Jan 16 The Membership Committee will
be meeting at 7 p.m. on January
16, at SJC. We will have a short
business meeting to plan for
upcoming events, such as New
Member Shabbat in the spring. We
will then be preparing the mailing
of invoices for the 2018 dues. If
anyone is interested in joining this
committee, please feel free to
attend this first meeting of the
year. For more information, please
contact Ed and Pat Simon at 302-
424-8020. Hope to see you there.
Religious Leader Search & Building Expansion Discussed at Annual Meeting The search for a new religious
leader and the need for a building
expansion were the focal points of
the December 3 Annual Meeting.
A committee charged with finding
a successor to retiring religious
leader Rabbi Beth Cohen has
narrowed its search down to two
candidates. The committee
conducted a “values-based” search
process that it believes will land
SJC a candidate with traits and
characteristics that reflect the
congregation’s values. We project
having a new religious leader by
the summer.
SJC has also been exploring
options for its building space.
With membership at 493 members
and the area’s population growing,
coupled with many recent SJC
events being at or above capacity,
Seaside’s Ad Hoc Committee on
Space Strategy recommended that
the building be expanded. See a
separate article on page 6
providing more details. A capital
campaign would be needed to
raise funds for the expansion.
SJC Treasurer, Eric Doroshow,
noted that the congregation’s
added expenses may result in a
dues increase in 2019.
SJC Board & Committee Meetings Meetings are at SJC unless
otherwise noted. Meetings are
open to SJC members.
Board Meetings – Sunday,
January 21, 12:15 p.m., and

A Taste of Mussar, Jan 18 Each month, usually on the second
Thursday of the month, at 7:30
p.m. at SJC, we study one virtue
or soul/character trait (middah)
that is part of Mussar, a spiritual
discipline within Judaism.
Our class in January will move to
the third Thursday, January 18.
We will be studying the middah of
Faith – Emunah, Chapter 23. The
chapter is in our text, Everyday
Holiness, by Alan Morinis. Those
who wish to participate in the
group discussion must read the
chapter in advance. On February
8, our middah will be Awe/Fear -
Yirah, Chapter 24.
The goal of Mussar is to assist us
in deepening our awareness of self
through the spiritual and
contemplative practice of
studying, experiencing, and
sharing our experiences with
middot. Mussar is not meant to be
intellectual. Rather, it is a spiritual
study, a way to explore our
spiritual selves, discovering who
we are and discussing our specific
experiences related to the selected
middah.
Haftorah Sessions Continue Due to the excitement and interest
in our prior sessions, we are
continuing our Haftorah
discussions into 2018! Sessions
are being planned through the
summer. The next session will be
on January 22, at 3 p.m., at SJC.
Member Jeffrey Rosen will
continue exploring Zechariah. His
discussion will include the Four
Exiles of the Jewish people and
the Jewish approach to textual
analysis. Please join us.
The People’s Law School On Sunday, January 21, at 3 p.m.,
at SJC, the first session of the
Adult Education Committee’s new
course, the People’s Law School,
will be held. SJC Member, Eric
Doroshow, will present the first
topic, Car Insurance and Civil
Litigation. Participants should
bring a copy of their car insurance
policy for class discussion. Future
sessions are scheduled at 3 p.m. on
February 18 - Law and the Court
System, March 18 - Immigration
Law, April 15 - Domestic
Relations Law, May 6 –
Mediation, June 10 - Criminal
Law, and July 15 - Wills and
Estates. Sessions will be presented
by SJC members who are active or
retired lawyers or judges. Each
session will include insights about
secular and Jewish law on the
given topic. Those who attend a
minimum of three sessions will
receive a certificate of completion.
Join us for informative and
interactive discussions about how
the law affects you.
SJC Book Group Schedule Join us on for our next discussions
on Wednesday, February 28, and
on Thursday, April 19. In
February, we will discuss
Notorious RBG: The Life and
Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by
Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik.
In April, we will discuss Death by
Pastrami by Leonard S. Bernstein
and Russ and Daughters by Mark
Russ Federman.
Special Adult Ed Event: “After Charlottesville” On Sunday, February 11, at 2
p.m., at SJC, Rich Rubenstein will
speak on "After Charlottesville:
Should We Worry About Fascism
in America?” Rich is eminently
qualified to speak to this topic:
Rhodes Scholar, former lawyer,
and political scientist; author of
nine books about various types of
violent social conflict and the
possibilities of resolving them
nonviolently; now University
Professor of Conflict Resolution
and Public Affairs at Northern
Virginia’s George Mason
University’s School for Conflict
Analysis and Resolution. He
speaks publicly on issues of peace
and social justice. Plan to hear his
brief lecture and join the very
timely conversation that will
follow.
Alfred Gross Scholars Shabbat Mark your calendars for April 15-
16 for the annual Alfred Gross
Scholar weekend. The Adult
Education Committee, in
conjunction with the Youth
Education Committee and the
Religious School, has invited
Charles Richter, Director of
Theater at Muhlenberg College, to
lecture on Jews and TV. And we
are doing something different this
year – having a Saturday
afternoon and Sunday morning
event! Professor Richter’s initial
presentation will be on Saturday
afternoon, followed by Havdalah
and a buffet dinner. On Sunday
morning, he will continue with a
presentation oriented towards our
religious school students, teens,
their families, and others.

Religious School News December was a fun month for our
students. Due to the annual
meeting and winter break, only 2
sessions were held. On December
10, the children created amazing
Chanukiot with the school’s art
director, Wendy Kessler. The
children had fun being creative.
On December 17, the students
participated in the annual
Chanukah program. In addition to
these activities, individual classes
met and much was learned. The
Hey class focused on the biblical
story of Yitro and Kidoshim,
while the Dalet class worked on
the Haftorah blessings and how to
be a mensch. A major focus for
the Gimmel class was learning the
Shema, while the Bet class learned
about the Torah and the emphasis
in Judaism with protecting the
earth. The Alef class learned about
biblical stories related to Joseph,
as well as the idea of giving
thanks. Religious School will not
meet during the winter break time
period.
Purim Celebration Mar 4 Our annual Purim celebration will
be Sunday, March 4, at SJC. At
11 a.m., our religious school
children will perform a new Purim
"Spiel." for the congregation that
our teens are writing. We will then
read the Megilla and enjoy a
potluck meat lunch. The children
will also participate in arts and
crafts projects and Hamantaschen
baking. This should be a fun day
for both adults and children.
Please come and support our
religious school. You don’t need
to have a child in the school to
attend. Bring a dish to share at the
potluck, and let Joel Simon know
if you plan to attend the lunch and
what food item you wish to bring
by contacting him at
302-245-1386.
BBYO - A Meeting for Teens & Their Parents, Jan 7 SJC’s BBYO chapter is off to a
great start! So far, the group has 7
official members! An overnight
lock-in at SJC was planned for
December 9, but was postponed
due to inclement weather. The
new date for the lock-in has not
yet been determined. Our next
event on Sunday, January 7, is for
parents and teens.
On January 7, at noon, Arielle
Buxbaum, a professional BBYO
staffer, will be at SJC to meet with
parents of 8th through 11th
graders. She will do a presentation
and field questions. The meeting is
open to SJC members and non-
members. Please invite any
parents of Jewish teens that you
know to learn about BBYO, an
international organization that
gives Jewish teens an opportunity
to meet other Jewish teens and
identify with their heritage.
While the parents are meeting, the
teens will meet, learn about
BBYO, meet other teens and enjoy
some refreshments. Arielle will
then meet with them for a short
meeting after the parent meeting.
Contact Sara Rosen with any
questions you may have at
240-393-2775.
Parking at SJC Please park on the hard asphalt strip
closest to the building only if you
have difficulty walking on the gravel.
That way, the strip is available for
those who need the firmer surface to
walk safely.

and the abundant gifts of the
natural world that give our senses’

we’ll enjoy a traditional vegetarian
Israeli lunch. As we have in past
years, we’ll collect money for
trees for the Jewish National Fund.

SJC Receives Gift of Hearing Assistance Technology Through the generosity of two
members who wish to remain
anonymous, SJC received a gift of
funds for the purchase of
equipment that enables those who
need assistance in hearing to enjoy
full participation in the services
and activities in SJC’s sanctuary.
For those with hearing aids with
“telephone coil” reception, a neck
loop is available that will
wirelessly connect to the audio
system. For others, an ear bud
headphone is available, or people
can use their own ear buds or
headphones and plug them into the
available receivers. In addition,
the gift funded the purchase of a
wireless microphone and a
wireless lapel microphone to
permit better communication
between the speakers and the
congregation. The necessary
modifications have been made and
supervised by the House
Committee, and the equipment is
now ready for use.
Report at Annual Meeting on Building Expansion At the December annual meeting,
SJC’s Ad Hoc Committee on
Space Strategy reported on its 9
month study of our building’s
current and future space needs.
Based on the likelihood of
continued membership growth,
growth in the community, and the
increased use of space by the
religious school and congregation
as a whole, they found that while
the building is sufficient for
today’s uses, the reasonably
projected growth will make the
building inadequate to serve the
community in the very near future.
The committee investigated three
scenarios - expanding the current
building, sale and rebuilding, and
demolishing the building and
rebuilding on the current site. The
Committee recommended that the
most cost effective approach
would be an expansion of the
current building, at approximately
$500,000. They proposed
obtaining some preliminary
architectural drawings and site
plan to determine a better estimate
of the likely cost. With an
informal show of hands, the SJC
members at the meeting indicated
a willingness to consider such an
expansion and the necessary
capital campaign that it would
entail. The House Committee will
arrange for the preliminary plans
and will report back to the Board
in the near future.
The committee was created by the
board after a strategic planning
session in March 2017. It is
chaired by Alyssa Simon, and
includes Harvey Fruman, Stanley
Silverblatt, Tony Namrow, and
Mat Ash.

SJC Donations for Community Service
Each year SJC, via the
Community Service Committee,
donates mostly to local non-profit
organizations. We believe in
helping out those who take care of
the people in our community. We
do have a budget for these
donations, but the amount is
increased when you select
Community Service Programs
when making a donation to SJC.
Thanks to all who donated! This
year, SJC donated to the following
organizations as recommended by
the committee:
A Way Home helps men who are
released from prison acclimate
back into the community. Services
include helping obtain housing,
job search assistance, and
transportation.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Rehoboth
Beach enables young people,
especially those who need us
most, to reach their full potential
as productive, caring, responsible
citizens.
Community Resource Center
(Winter Day Center), serves as a
centralized location to help meet
the needs of county residents
facing homelessness.
Delaware Hospice provides
hospice and healthcare services,
including end-of-life education
and support, in Southern
Delaware.
Epworth United Methodist Church
Food and Love Pantry feeds the
homeless and international
students through a food pantry,
weekly Sunday soup kitchen, and
Tuesday student dinner program in
the summer. SJC participates with
EUMC in the soup kitchen and
student dinner program.
Immanuel Shelter, provides beds
for the homeless from December
through March. Their Code Purple
Shelter is located at 37439 Oyster
House Road, Rehoboth Beach.
Islamic Society of Central
Delaware supports the needs of
Muslim families in Dover and
surrounding areas.
Jewish Family Service Sussex
Care Management, is a group of
dedicated professionals who
connect individuals with local
resources, help navigate healthcare
and insurance concerns, and assist
with hospital discharge planning.
La Esperanza is the only bi-
cultural and bilingual non-profit
multiservice agency in Sussex
County that provides free
culturally and linguistically
appropriate programs and services
in the areas of family
empowerment, immigration, and
victim services for Hispanic
adults, children, and families.
La Red Health Center's provides
patient-centered care to the diverse
members of our community.
Milford Multi-Cultural Center
provides services to the homeless
and the hungry in Milford, DE.
Peoples Place is dedicated to
helping people find their path to
growth and independence. It
provides programs and services in
Southern Delaware that are
focused on counseling, education,
prevention, intervention,
supportive services, and advocacy.
Planned Parenthood delivers vital
reproductive health care, sex
education, and information to
millions of women, men, and
young people worldwide
Rehoboth Beach Fire Company is
an important part of the Rehoboth
community, of which SJC is a
part.
Southern Delaware Therapeutic
Riding, provides equine-assisted
therapy promoting the physical,
emotional, and educational growth
of children and adults with
disabilities.
Southern Poverty Law Center
fights hate and bigotry, teaches
tolerance, and seeks justice for all
peoples hit by these issues.
West Rehoboth Land Trust, assists
residents of the West Rehoboth
neighborhood to maintain their
ability to live in an area of rapid
expansion and rising property
values.
Chanukah Celebration
On the morning of December 17,
the Religious School hosted the
SJC Chanukah Party. The morning
began with the students decorating
Chanukah cookies, and then
singing songs for the
congregation, and lighting the
menorah. After a delicious potluck
lunch with the community (and all
the latkes you could eat), the
children participated in doughnut
decoration and then a doughnut
eating contest. They also made
candles and created Hebrew
bookmarks. What a beautiful
event for our whole community.

December Shabbat Dinner- Delicious! Once again, Seasiders were treated
to Shabbat Dinner before Friday
night services on December 1.
This wonderful opportunity to
meet, eat, and mingle before
services is always popular, and
this past evening was no
exception. A sold-out crowd
enjoyed a traditional chicken
dinner. Thanks go to Stanley
Silverblatt, Hank Smith, and Lee
Horn for organizing this event.
Toys for Tots For the third consecutive year,
Mike and Fran Saltzman (pictured
below) overloaded the Toys For
Tots bin at the Lewes City Hall.
This year, we collected new and
unwrapped toys at the Shabbat
dinner and service on December 1,
and at the SJC annual meeting on
December 3. Through the
generosity of our congregation, we
collected and delivered a very
large load of books, games and
toys. City Hall is always very
grateful to accept our Toys For
Tots delivery, and they were
especially happy to receive them
so early this year.
