“Go and Do the Same” In the coming weeks of late October and early November, you'll be invited by our Finance and Stewardship Team and other people in our congregation to prayerfully consider your 2017 pledge to Seaside Community United Church of Christ. We call this “Stewardship Campaign” and I think that the language is important. It’s not a fundraiser (though we do raise funds). Instead, it’s an opportunity to ponder anew the gifts we have been entrusted with - both as individuals and as a congregation - and to think about how to best steward those resources. The scripture text for this year’s Stewardship season comes from Luke 10: the story of the Good Samaritan. Jesus tells this parable as an instructive text. At the end, he encourages his listeners, “Go, and do the same.” Go, be like the Good Samaritan. Go, tell this story to others. Go, take seriously what you've heard here today. This story is often said to be about hospitality. And it is. But it’s also about Hospitality’s close cousin, Generosity. Have you ever noticed that the Good Samaritan really goes above and beyond? He doesn’t simply notice the man lying beside the Jericho Road. He doesn’t just offer to call for help. Instead, he takes his own precious time AND his financial resources and offers them generously to a total stranger. He not only carries the injured man to safety, but pays for his continued care. He not only pays for one night’s lodging, he tells the Innkeeper to do whatever is needed and gives his word to come and pay the debt. It’s pretty amazing when you think about it, really. I always wonder, how did the conversation between this Good Samaritan and his family go when he arrived home that evening. “Honey, you won’t believe….the most surprising thing happened to me today when I was on the Jericho Road!” His spouse or other family members might have chastised him: “You stopped for a Jew? You could have been killed! They hate us, you know.” Or what about this, “You spent how much money? On a perfect stranger?” Or maybe his family was just awfully proud of him. We don’t know. What we do know is that Jesus commended him for his behavior. He put himself out there - put himself at risk. He did something that appears, at first glance, to be wild. He went out of his way with his generosity. He did this because he knew it mattered and he knew he had the ability, with the resources he had been entrusted with, to save a life. Can I tell you something? Something that really matters? Lean in. You don’t want to miss this: You, too, have the chance to save a life. In fact, you are already doing so. There are people who walk through the doors of Seaside UCC and experience a love so dramatic, so complete, so true that their lives are changed. Utterly transformed. Such is the power of Christ’s love working through us. It almost takes your breath away, doesn’t it? We, too, can “Go, and do the same.” We, too, have the opportunity to save lives - both literally and in a transformational sense. What a gift. What an honor. And thanks be to God. So be on the lookout in the coming weeks. In addition to this, we are excited to welcome new members Nicky, Mandy, Matt, Tangie, Mike and Amelia in the beginning of the month. COMMUNITY’S CHILD WARM UP COLLECTION

OUTREACH - COMING IN NOVEMBER

THANKSGIVING COLLECTION

Our annual collecting of nonperishable food and grocery gift cards will occur on Sunday, November 13, 2016.

The outreach committee will then supplement those donations with funds from our budget line item to provide Thanksgiving meals for needy families in the South Bay. Our collective gifts will support the efforts of Love

INC, Harbor Interfaith Service (HIS) and Toberman Neighborhood Center. More details to come!

Community’s Child needs your help to keep South Bay families warm this winter. They are seeking donations of clean, gently used/new blankets, jackets, sweaters, scarves, caps, mittens and gloves. We will receive your donations at Seaside UCC on Sunday, November 6th. If you need to bring them to the church before that date, please call ahead to (310) 375-4441 to make those arrangements. Thank you for remembering these families.

SISTERS IN SPIRIT WOMEN’S GROUP

Friday, October 21, 2016 At 6:30 pm in the Church House

We did not meet in September, as our usual third Friday of the month was on the same weekend as the Richard Sherman Jazz Concert. We hope everyone took the opportunity to go hear his wonderful group and guest vocalists. It was a successful, high energy performance and a high energy audience - a wonderful night of entertainment. We are still working on a topic for October, and as usual, as soon as we have one, we will send an email out to our distribution list. If you are interested in knowing more about Sisters in Spirit, call the Seaside UCC office and ask to have your email address added to our distribution list.
