SYNOPSIS

AsthesandslowlyrunsoutonHugh’sprobation,

theKnightfamilymustdecidewhethertheirstruggleswillbringthemclosertogether…

ortearthemapart.

With Penny (Hayley McElhinney) gone, Hugh’s (Rodger Corser) determined to live out theremainderofhisprobation inpeace. Althoughthere’snopeace inWhyhopewhileNora’s (HelenThomson)incharge,andwhenFloyd(WintaMcGrath)startsgettingbulliedinSydney,Pennymakesthecalltotradeinhercitylifestyleandreturntothehospital.ButmuchtoHugh’sdispleasure,shedoesn’tcomebackalone–she’sfollowedbyDrToke(AngusMcLaren),anex-armymedicwhotookafancytoherinSydney,andisdeterminedtogivetheirrelationshiparealchance.

And they’renot theonly relationshipbeing tested. Aftera rocky start,Matt (Ryan Johnson)andCharlie(NicoledaSilva)decidethatthey’restrongerasateam,andwhenHayley(ChloeBayliss)andAjax(MattCastley)accidentlyhavesex,Ajaxdecidestopropose.

MeanwhilethegruellingelectioncampaignbetweenRod(PatrickWilson)andMeryl(TinaBursill)isfinallyover,andwithelevenvotesbetweenthem,MerylhasbecomeMayor.ButRod’snotonetoadmit defeat lightly, and when Hayley stumbles upon two boxes of uncounted votes, aninvestigationbeginsthatputsMeryl’spositioninjeopardy.

Things get even harderwhen Jim (Steve Bisley) suddenly collapses andwe learn he’s got kidneydamagefromhisdialysis. Andsowithanelectionscandal,akidneytransplantandaweddingonthehorizon,theKnightfamilymustdecidewhethertheirstruggleswillbringthemclosertogether,ortearthemapart.

WithPenny(HayleyMcElhinney)havinglefttownforSydney,it’schaosinWhyhopeasthehospitalisledbyherincompetentreplacement.

Penny’s (HayleyMcElhinney) been gone for a month now, having traded inWhyhope for a job inSydney.Andshe’smakingthemostofthelifestylechange–includingdatinganex-armymedicshemetathernewhospital.UnfortunatelyFloyd(WintaMcGrath)isnotenjoyingSydney,he’sbeingbulliedatschool,anddesperatelywantstoreturntoWhyhope.

Backthehospital,thingsarechaotic:there’saraminHugh’s(RodgerCorser)office,awoman’shavingtwins(thatswiftlyturnintotriplets)andleadingitallistheless-than-qualifiedNoraGumbleton(HelenThomson).Betty(BelindaBromilow)andKen(CharlesWu)plottogetridofher,butHugh’snothavinganypartofit–he’sdeterminedtoliveouttheremainderofhisdaysinpeace.Butthingsgetseriouswhen Jim (Steve Bisley) collapses andAjax (Matt Castley)brings him into the hospital in need of abloodtransfusion.Jimrecoversfromhiscollapse,butwithanoddsideeffect–he’splaguedbyadarksenseof foreboding. Hughdiagnoses that it’sactuallyasymptom–Nora’s transfusedhimwith thewrongbloodtype.HughquicklyrealisesthatNora’snotjustlazy,she’sdangerouslyincompetentandheagreestohelpBettyandKen:‘Gumbleton’sgottago!’

MeanwhileplansforMeryl’s(TinaBursill) inaugurationareinfullswing,butarequicklyhaltedwhenHayley(ChloeBayliss)discoverstwoboxesofuncountedvotesinabackroom.Theycomeupwithaplantoexposetheboxesinduecourse,butwhenRod(PatrickWilson)getswindofthemissingvotes,Meryl backtracks and ordersHayley to destroy them. But struck by a crisis of conscience,Hayleydecidesnottoburntheboxesandhidesthemintheshedinstead.

Atthehomestead,Matt’s(RyanJohnson)disappearedtoclearhishead,andCharlie’s(NicoledaSilva)desperatelytryingtogethimtoreturnhome.ButMerylquestionshowhardshe’sreallytrying,andconvinceshertousealittleimagination.Inspired,Charlieletsafewkegsofbeerdrain,knowingMattwouldwon’tstandforanyoneelsebrewingareplacement. EventuallyhereturnstothehomesteadandtellsCharliethathe’sreadytoforgiveher.Buthedoeshaveoneimportantquestiontoask–hasshekissedHughsincehisreturntoWhyhope?Shetellshimthetruth,andafuriousMattgoesofftoconfrontHugh.Hughtriestosmooththingsover–thesecondkisswasn’tevenhisidea.ButheonlymakesthingsworseandMatt’sincensed–ithappenedtwice?!

AsHugh (RodgerCorser)and thehospital teamplot toget ridofNora (HelenThomson),Hayley(ChloeBayliss)andAjax(MattCastley)arealarmedtodiscovertheyaccidentlyjusthadsex.

WorriedaboutthedangerNora(HelenThomson)posestopatients,Betty(BelindaBromilow)andHugh(RodgerCorser)concoctaplantohideanycomplicatedcasesfromherinanabandonedpartofthehospital.Butwhenanaccidentonaracecourseinjuriesseveraljockeys,Nora’sfirstonthescene. Hugh’s on high alert, and stops her from misdiagnosing a ruptured breast implant as apneumothorax.Back at thehospital,Hugh devises aplan–makeKen (CharlesWu)ahoneytrap,videoitandthenreportNoraforsexualharassment.Theygetthetape,butwhenHughconfrontsNoraaboutit,sheproducesJoey’stoxicologyreport.Shestronglysuspectseuthanasia,andisreadytothrowbothHughandPenny(HayleyMcElhinney)underthebusforit.Hugh’sleftwithnochoicebuttodoau-turnandrelenttoNorarunningtheshow.

Meanwhile Ajax (Matt Castley) and Hayley (Chloe Bayliss) accidently have sex. Ajax wants toproposetoHayley,butendsupgettingveryconflictingadvicefromallthefamily.Thingsareevenmore complicated now that Charlie’s (Nicole da Silva) living at the homestead, and is beingsubjected to everyone’s thoughts on her situation. HavingHugh around isn’t helping either, andeventuallyCharlie tellshimheneeds to leave.ButMeryl (TinaBursill)givesMatt (Ryan Johnson)some tough truthsabout relationships,andwhenAjaxproposes toHayley in frontof the family,Mattdecidesit’stimetoforgivebothCharlieandHughandmoveon.

Backatthehospital,Floyd’s(WintaMcGrath)runawayandPenny’scomeafterhim.They’reboththerewhenacallcomesin–Nora’sbeenstruckby lightning. Hughsensesthechancetomakeadeal,he’llsaytheincidenthappenedatworksoshecanclaiminsurance,solongasshedisappearsforgood.Sheagrees.Oh,andHughwantsoneotherthing:aleasetotheabandonedpartofthehospital – he’s moving in. Meanwhile Penny and Floyd have a quiet moment together at thecemetery.Floydpromiseshe’lltryhardertolikeSydney,butit’sgotPennythinking–maybethey’dbebetteroffinWhyhopeafterall...

When Penny (Hayley McElhinney) returns to Whyhope, she’s confronted with the chaos Nora(HelenThomson)leftbehind,andanoldscifimanuscriptofCharlie’s(NicoledaSilva)comesoutofthewoodworks.

Penny (Hayley McElhinney) and Floyd (Winta McGrath) have returned to Whyhope. But thehospital is not how Penny left it – her office is hazard zone; mouldy sandwiches, a rat trap,miscellaneous filespiledhigh ...And thingsonlygetworse the furthershedigs– it seemsNora’s(HelenThomson)beenpeddlingOxycodoneoutoftheclinic,patientsampleshaven’tbeensentfortesting and to top it all off,Hugh’s (Rodger Corser) now living at the hospital. Things getmorecomplicatedwhenPennyrealisesNora’sstillrecoveringfromthelightningstrikeinthewards,andisdeterminedtocarryoutthe insurancescam. Buteverything’s interruptedwhentheygetacallouttotreataguywho’sbeencaughtunderafallingtreeandnowhasCrushSyndrome.Heneedsafasciotomy,butastheybegin,thepowergoesout.Theycontinuewiththehelpoftorches,butallofthischaoshasleftPennyseriouslywonderingwhethershemadetherightdecisiontoreturntoWhyhope.EventuallysheconfidesinBetty(BelindaBromilow)thatshe’snotsureifshe’lleverbehappyhere.

MeanwhileHughhasasuddenburstofinspiration,anddesignsanewstentshapedlikeahelix.ButhisenthusiasmisquicklydeflatedwhenTrevor(JacekKoman)remindshimthatnoonewillinvestinthem after the artificial heart disaster. However things start looking upwhenHugh learns thatPenny has been given a research grant from Sydney, and they strike a deal to engineer his newstenttogether.

Backatthehomestead,Charlie’s (NicoledaSilva)oldsci finovelmanuscripthascomeoutofthewoodworks.CharliegivesittoMatt(RyanJohnson)toread,buthe’sneverbeenoneforscifi,andhestrugglestogetthroughit.HeleavesitwithAjax(MattCastley),andsuddenlythewholefamilyare reading it – and are quickly recognising themselves in some of the characters. MeanwhileHayley’s(ChloeBayliss)havingacrisisofconscience.Theboxesofvotesintheshedarefillingherwithguilt,andhavingherparentsoveratthehomesteadisn’thelping.EventuallyHayleycan’ttakeitanylongerandcallsthepolicetoreportthemissingboxes...

Hayley(ChloeBayliss)andMeryl(TinaBursill)dealwiththeaftermathoftwoboxesofuncountedvotes,andHugh(RodgerCorser)bondswithAjax(MattCastley)who’sdoingworkexperienceatthehospital.

Penny(HayleyMcElhinney)andHugh’s(RodgerCorser)worstnightmarecomestruewhenthey’recalledouttothesceneofa lightplanecrash. Theyquicklydiscoverthere’snosurvivors,andareterrifiedwhenfacedwiththeprospectofgettingbackontheirownlightplanetoflyhome.Sothepairdeviseaplanandsedateeachotherforthedurationoftheflight,andwakeupwhenthey’vesafelytoucheddowninWhyhope.

Atthehomestead,Charlie(NicoledaSilva)andMatt(RyanJohnson)arebeinginterviewedforanarticleabouttheBrewery.Butwhenthereporterarrives,thepressuregetstothemandtheybothbecome slightly warped versions of themselves –Matt’s suddenly a cowboy, and Charlie’s anentrepreneurialbusinesswoman.Howevertheysoonrealisethattheyoungbloggerhashereyesonabiggerstory,andisusingthemtogettoMeryl(TinaBursill).

Meanwhile,Ajax(MattCastley)haschosentodohisworkexperienceatthehospital,butisalarmedwhen the threecorpsesarebrought in fromtheplanecrashandstored in the freezer. And thatisn’thisonlybrushwithdeath–ashelaterwatchesoneofthepatientshelookedaftersuddenlydiefromsepsis.Hestrugglestounderstandhowtheotherscanbesocommonplacewithdeathandconsiderswhetherhecouldeverhaveacareeratthehospital.AndAjaxisnottheonlynewfaceintheclinic–asDrToke(AngusMcLaren),theex-armymedicfromSydneysuddenlyshowsup.He’sfollowed Penny back toWhyhope, determined to give their relationship a real chance. Hugh’simmediatelyannoyedbyhim,andperplexedastowhyPennywouldconsiderdatingaguylikethat.SoHughdecidestogetthescoopontheirrelationshipfromhisman(well,boy)ontheinside–andFloyd(WintaMcGrath)tellshimthingslookserious.

At the Town Hall, an election recount has been called, andMeryl and Rod (Patrick Wilson) sitnervouslywaiting.Finally,theresultsarein,andMerylisstillthevictor.Rod’sfurious,andwindsuphavingaheartattack.Hugh,PennyandTokeallarriveonthescene,wheretheydiscoverhe’srecentlyhadbypasssurgery.Theybringhimbacktothehospital,whereHughunpicksthestiches,openshis chestandperformsacardiacmassage, savinghis life. But thedrama isnotyetover–Merylmayhavewontheelection,butTugger(LucyDurack)revealsCCTVfootageofHayley(ChloeBayliss)movingtheboxesoutsidetheTownHall,incriminatingthemboth.

Indesperateneedofalawyer,Meryl(TinaBursill)enliststhehelpofPenny’s(HayleyMcElhinney)barristersister,whileHugh(RodgerCorser)attemptstosolvethecaseoftwowomen–onewho’sunconscious,andtheotherwhodoesn’tspeakEnglish.

Indesperateneedofalawyer,Meryl(TinaBursill)enliststhehelpofPenny’s(HayleyMcElhinney)barristersister,Celia(EllaScottLynch).HoweverPenny’srelationshipwithherkleptomaniacsisterhas always been slightly strained, andPenny’s not thrilledwhen she suddenly shows up on herdoorstep.Celiaquicklymakesherselfathome, including invitingall thestaffover fordinner,andwindsupsleepingwithKen(CharlesWu).

Atthehospital,Hugh(RodgerCorser)getsacallouttoafarmwhereawomanisstuckinahaybaler.Theybringherintothehospital,andHughattemptstodiagnoseher–butitdoesn’thelpthatshe’sunconscious and her friend doesn’t speak English. They operate and remove her spleen, but itdoesn’twork–she’sstilldeteriorating.HowevertheysoonfigureoutherfriendisspeakingDanish,andBetty’s (BelindaBromilow) able to translate – leading them to discover she’s got a fishbonestuckinherlungs.

Meanwhile there’s a new detective in town, Darren (Uli Latukefu), who’s been brought on toinvestigate thecorruptioncase. BothMerylandHayley (ChloeBayliss)arepreppedbyCeliaandinterviewed.Itgoeswell,butDarren’soutforblood,andMerylsoonsuspectsthatheisgoingtoraid the homestead. She quickly calls for help fromMatt (Ryan Johnson) andCharlie (Nicole daSilva),gettingthemtodestroyawholelotofdocuments,andgivingthepairaglimpseintojusthowcorruptMeryl really is. Things go further south whenHayley confesses to Celia, and she is nolonger able to represent her. Sensing thatHayley is a liability for their defence, Celia stronglyadvisesMeryl to throwherunder thebus. Meryl considers it,butconcludes that family ismoreimportant, andmakes a deal to stepdownasMayor in exchange for dropping the investigation.Darren agrees,butMeryl’sgotone last trickupher sleeve–andsheenlists thehelpofHugh tomakeitlooklikeshe’shadaheartattack.

ThingsgetcomplicatedforPenny(HayleyMcElhinney)whenshe’slefttocareforateenagerwithDown syndrome, and Charlie (Nicole da Silva) gets into strife when she pushes the schoolboundariesandgetsfired.

Penny’s (HayleyMcElhinney) facedwith a tough decisionwhen the father of one of her regularpatients,a16yearoldboywithDownsyndrome,isinacaraccident.Whenthefatherisputinaninducedcoma,Pennydecides to take theboy inuntilhe recovers. Meanwhile thingsaregettingserious betweenDr Toke (AngusMcLaren)andPenny, as he arranges one outlandish date afteranother.ButnowPenny’sgotbothFloyd(WintaMcGrath)andMax(ChrisBunton)intow,puttingadampenerontheirromanticnightsout.

Backat thehospital,Hugh (RodgerCorser) isn’t takingtheir relationshipwell,andgivesPennyanultimatum–get ridofhimandtheycouldbetogether. Butshe’sonlygot24hours tomakeherdecision.It’smadeevenmorecomplicatedwhenTokedecidestoproposetoPenny. ButPenny’srealistic–canheeverreallyseehimselflivinginWhyhope?Eventually,Tokerealisesthatshe’stooingrainedinthetownfortheirrelationshiptowork,andheleavestoworkonaMercyship.

Meanwhileatherschool,Charlie (NicoledaSilva)gets intostrifewhenshetakesherclass foranimpromptuexcursion,andwindsupgettingthekidscaughtinastorm.It’sthefinalstrawinalonglineofalternateteachingmethods,andtheprincipalfiresher.Thingsgetworsewhenshegoestohishousetobegforherjobback,andwalksinonhimdressedasababy.Charlie’sconvincedshe’sout of a job, but Meryl (Tina Bursill) intervenes, and forces the principal to hold a panel todeliberate.WhentheyvoteforCharlietokeepherjob,theprincipalisfuriousandquitsonthespot,allowingMeryltopushCharlie’snamethroughasactingprincipal.

The annual ‘Miss Whyhope’ pageant is in town, and Meryl’s (Tina Bursill) not pleased whenCharlie(NicoledaSilva)decidestoputanewmodernspinonthetraditionalevents.

TheAnnual‘MissWhyhope’PageantisinfullswingandMeryl’s(TinaBursill)doingeverythingshecantomakesureHayley(ChloeBayliss)takeshomethecrown.Butasthenewprincipal,Charlie’s(NicoledaSilva)incharge,andshe’sdecidedtoimplementafewmodernchangestothetraditionalevents. Instead of tea parties and float parades, the contestants now face barrel runs and skeetshooting.Meryl’snotpleasedbyCharlie’sapproach–Hayley’sbeenpreparingforthecompetitionforyears.MeanwhileAjax(MattCastley)hasbeenleftinchargeofweddingpreparations,andhe’sconflictedwhenHugh(RodgerCorser)tellshimhe’stooyoungtogetmarried.Hiscoldfeetaren’thelpedbyasuddenrealisation–mighthehavefeelingsforanothergirlinthepageant?

Backatthehospital,thingsareheatingupbetweenHughandPenny(HayleyMcElhinney)astheymakeplanstogoonaproperdate.Butit’snotgoingtobeaseasyastheythought,andHughfirsthastodealwithanemergencycalltoawoman’shouse–oneofherkidsishavinganasthmaattack.They’refinallyabouttogoontheirdatewhenPennyremembersHugh’sfortnightlydrugtest,andeverythingisputonholdwhenitcomesbackpositive.

MeanwhileAjaxhasdecidedhecan’tmarryHayleyifhehasfeelingsforanothergirl,andconvincedhe’sdoing the right thing,he tellsherand theybreakup. Hugh’s shocked–henevermeant forthemtobreakup,hejustwantedtostopthewedding.Andthat’snothisonlyproblem–hecan’tworkoutwhythedrugtestcamebackpositive.EventuallybothheandPennyputittogether–thewoman’shouseusedtobeamethlab,andtheexposurehascausedboththekid’sasthmaattackandHugh’spositivetest. HeandPennyagreetogoonareplacementdate,but thedamagehasalreadybeendone.Hugh’sconvincedthatshe’llalwaysseehimasthebadguy–andmaybeshe’sright.

Whenthehomesteadgetsstruckbytreethieves,Matt(RyanJohnson)andAjax(MattCastley)aredetermined to catch them red handed. But when Jim (Steve Bisley) suddenly collapses, Hugh(RodgerCorser)discovershehasn’tbeendoinghisdialysisandit’shadseriousconsequencesonhishealth–he’sgoingtoneedakidneytransplant.Penny(HayleyMcElhinney)organisesfromahomedialysismachine, but it all gets a bitmuch for Jim. The family are all tested, and despite beingbrokenupwithAjax,Hayley(ChloeBayliss)wantstobetestedtoo.Thingsgetcomplicatedwhenshe’stheonlyonetocomebackamatch,butsheinsistsshe’lldonate.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s (Nicole da Silva) novel has found a cult online following, but her fifteensecondsoffamearetaintedwhenshegetstrolledonline.Againstadvice,shestartsreplyingtotheanonymousreviewers.Howevershe’salsofoundherselfdealingwithacrazyfanwhokeepsleavingherweirdgifts.Thingsescalatewhentheydiscovershe’sbeencampingoutontheirproperty,butCharliedecidesnot topresscharges. Instead, theytalkabouthernewnovel,andCharlie findsacureforherwriter’sblock.

Backatthehospital,HughgoesaheadwiththefinaltestsforHayley,onlytocomeupagainstanactofGod:scansshowthatshewasbornwithonlyonekidney.Backtosquareone,PennyquestionsHugh–hehastestedhimself,right?Hugharguesagainsttheideabuteventuallyrelentsandgetstested.HoweverhethengetsacallsayingakidneyhasbecomeavailableinQueensland.Jimneedstogetonaplane fast,but theycan’t findhim–he’soutwithMatt chasing thetreethief. Hughfinallyfindshimbutit’stoolate,thekidneyhasgonetosomeoneelse.ButallisnotyetlostforJim–asHughrevealshecamebackamatch.

While the family prepare for Jim’s (Steve Bisley) impending transplant operation, the womanHugh(RodgerCorser)marriedinVegasshowsupintown-andwelearntheyneverofficiallygotdivorced.

It’sthedayofHugh(RodgerCorser)andJim’s(SteveBisley)transplantoperation,andthestressisbeing felt by all the family.Meanwhile amysteriouswoman’s just arrived in town, andwe soonlearnthatshe’sHugh’swifehemarriedinVegas–andtomakemattersmorecomplicated,they’renottechnicallydivorced.She’scometoWhyhopeaspartofherAAgroup’s12-stepprogram,andisdeterminedtomakeamendstoHughforthepainshecausedhim.HoweverHughjustwantstosignthedivorcepapers andhaveherdisappear for good.But the longer she’s in town, themoreoldfeelings start to surface,andwhenHugh goesunder theknife shecan’thelpbut showupat thehospitaltoseehim.Thingsdon’tgosmoothlyduringthetransplant,andaftertheoperation,Hughhas a heart attack.
