Rest for Concert Band – Frank Ticheli (b. 1958) was created in 2010 as a concert band adaptation of the composer’s work for chorus, “There Will Be Rest.” In making this version, the composer wanted to preserve almost everything from the original including harmony, dynamics, and even the original registration. He also endeavored to preserve carefully the fragile beauty and quiet dignity suggested by the words of the poet Sara Teasdale: There will be rest, and sure stars shining Over the roof-tops crowned with snow, A reign of rest, serene forgetting, The music of stillness holy and low. I will make this world of my devising, Out of a dream in my lonely mind, I shall find the crystal of peace, above me Stars I shall find. Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) Noisy Wheels of Joy – Eric Whitacre (b.1970) is just pure, simple fun, written in the tradition of the great comic operatic overtures, and it was designed to provide any concert with a musical merriment. The structure is quite formal, but the three themes (love, adventure, and buffo) get thrown around the wind symphony with wild abandon. Noisy Wheels of Joy was commissioned by the Band Composers Masterworks Consortium. It was premiered on March 8, 2001, at the ABA National Convention. Eric Whitacre is one of the most popular and performed composers of our generation. Mr.Whitacre studied at the UNLV and at The Juilliard School, where he earned a master of music degree and studied with John Corigliano, the famed Pulitzer Prize and Oscar-winning composer. Program Notes compiled by Marcie Phelan
Edward S. Lisk is an internationally recognized clinician, conductor, and author. He is an honored and elected member (48th) of the prestigious National Band Hall of Fame for Distinguished Conductors. He is a recipient of the distinguished 2009 Midwest Medal of Honor. The Midwest Medal of Honor recognizes the recipients for their conspicuous efforts, worldwide recognition, and continuing influence in the
development and improvement of instrumental ensembles. He is the recipient of the 2012 Phi Beta Mu International Outstanding Contributor to Bands Award.
Called a “unique leader in the profession” and “a dynamic force in music education,” Edward S. Lisk has been invited to speak and conduct throughout the United States and abroad. He is an inducted member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association and in the year 2000, served as the 63rd President of this distinguished organization founded by Edwin Franko Goldman. His active guest-conducting schedule includes all-state bands, honor bands, university and professional bands. Since 1985, Mr. Lisk has served as an adjunct professor, appeared as a clinician/lecturer, adjudicator, and guest conductor throughout 85 universities in 46 states, five Canadian Provinces and Australia. He is the author of The Creative Director Series (10 pub.) published by Meredith Music Publications, a coauthor of the highly acclaimed 9-volume publication by GIA, Teaching Music Through Performance in Band and editor of the Edwin Franko Goldman March Series for Carl Fischer Music Publications.
Mr. Lisk is Vice President Emeritus of the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors, and Past President and CEO of the John Philip Sousa Foundation and currently serving as Chairman of the Board. He is a past-president of the National Band Association (’90-’92) and served NBA as Executive Secretary Treasurer (’97-’02). He is the recipient of many distinguished awards and titles.
Dr. Christian Wilhjelm, conductor, professional musician and educator, has been the Ridgewood Concert Band’s Musical Director since it was founded in 1983. He was also Music Director of the renowned Goldman Memorial Band in New York City. He regularly conducts the metropolitan area’s leading professional ensembles such as the Norwalk Symphony. As a French horn player, he has performed under the world’s great conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Colin Davis and Arthur Fiedler. As a professional musician, Dr. Wilhjelm has played the French horn with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops and, as a principal, with the Boston Ballet Orchestra, the Boston Opera Orchestra and the Richmond Symphony. A graduate of the New England Conservatory, he received his doctorate in music from Columbia University in 1998.
Puszta – Jan Van der Roost (b.1956) A versatile composer and arranger, Van der Roost is represented by works for wind band, brass quintet, orchestra, choir, chamber ensemble, piano, and guitar. His compositions have been performed on radio and television and recorded in over 35 countries. This suite of four gypsy dances was written in 1987. While having the definitive sound of authentic folk dances, the themes and melodies are all original. The dances alternate from bright and colorful to tranquil and melancholic, moods typical of gypsy music. Lying to the south and east of the Danube, the Puszta is the great Hungarian plain or prairie country that was home to nomadic shepherds and fierce horsemen. The region is noted as the original home of the celebrated Lipizzaner stallions. Onward - Upward March – Edwin Franko Goldman (1878-1956) was written in 1930 during a period when the composer was deeply involved in efforts to standardize concert band instrumentation. Only a few months earlier he had organized the American Bandmasters Association to raise wind band music to a higher standard of artistic excellence and to secure the adaptation of universal instrumentation so that band publications of all countries would be interchangeable. At the time, wind bands contained varying numbers of musicians and instruments and little music was composed specifically for band. The title of this composition reflects optimistic conviction that bands would evolve "onward" to a bright and flourishing future and standardized orchestration would enable "upward" progression of the genre.
PROGRAM NOTES Fantasia and Fugue in c minor – J.S. Bach (1685-1750). The foundation of J.S. Bach’s legacy is in his establishment of a harmonic and melodic style that is still being taught in colleges and universities. By giving each line its own beauty through the interaction of melody, harmony, and rhythm, he transforms a simple melody into a majestic sonority of great passion and imagery. The Fantasia and Fugue was composed during his employment as organist and member of the court orchestra in Weimar, Germany. Some estimates put the date of its composition at 1723. Sir Edward Elgar’s orchestral transcription of the Fantasia and Fugue in c minor came about over a casual lunch with Richard Strauss in 1920. They agreed that Elgar would score the Fugue and that Strauss would score the Fantasia. Elgar completed the Fugue in April of 1921. Hearing nothing from Strauss regarding the Fantasia, Elgar completed its scoring in June of 1922. Writing to an organist friend Elgar stated, “I have orchestrated a Bach fugue in a modern way ... I wanted to show how gorgeous and great and brilliant he would have made himself sound if he had had our means.” Timothy Topolewski’s setting for concert band heard here this evening, offers the wind band the opportunity to experience Bach and Elgar at their finest. Selections from “The Danserye” – Tielman Susato (c. 1515-1570) arr. by Patrick Dunnigan is a new setting for wind band consisting of nine dances fashioned into an extended “symphonic suite.” The arrangement utilizes the full resources of the modern wind band featuring various sections (or consorts of instruments) in alteration with powerful tutti passages. While the wind parts remain faithful to the original material, the dances are energized with a healthy dose of contemporary percussion effects and a significant part for acoustic guitar. This blend of sound generates a “new, but familiar element,” thus making something very modern out of music that is more than 450 years old.
The Ridgewood Concert Band (RCB), in its 31st season, is one of the leading wind ensembles in the United States. Founded by community leaders, dedicated musicians and Music Director Chris Wilhjelm in 1983, the RCB is committed to engaging and inspiring our audiences with the finest in traditional and contemporary wind literature. Led by Dr. Wilhjelm, the band is composed of professional, amateur and student players drawn from across the tri-state area. _______________________________________________________________
