DIY Cross-Stitch Planter Box

HolidayWe love how cross-stitch seems to be making a comeback in the most fun

ways! Non-traditional cross-stitched items have been popping up in various craft projects for the last year or two. We thought it was the perfect addition

to make a plain wooden box into something super festive for the holidays!

1. Lightly sand any rough areas on the planter box, inside and out then paint all of the outside and the inside walls. Print and trim the cross-stitch patterns. Center a pattern on one long side of the planter and tape down. Place transfer paper between the pattern and the planter, graphite side down. Use a pencil to lightly circle each corner of every colored square until the entire pattern is transferred to the box.

Note: If the graphite leaves behind unwanted dark spots on the planter you can go over the area again with paint after completing the next step.

2. Use a drill with a bit large enough for your yarn needle to fit through, and drill holes through all of the transferred markings.

If you are decorating both sides with cross-stitch, go ahead and do all of the drilling before any sewing.

3. Thread the yarn on a large needle, taping the end if needed to get it through the eye of the needle. Begin creating the X’s for the cross-stitch pattern. Use the paper pattern as a guide as needed.

4. Trim any “fuzzies” as needed that the yarn may have created. The insides of the box will look a bit messy, but filling the box with florals or other fun holiday items will hide that away.

We used clear push pins to hang my wreaths on the wall, or you can use an over the door wreath hanger to hang your wreath on the

front door.

1. Begin by choosing colors of paint and painting your snowflakes. If you are only making one wreath, then you only need 2-3 colors, and one hoop, wood ornament, and package of mini snowflakes.

2. Once your snowflakes are painted on the front and the back, let them dry. Then, use your hot glue to attach the small snowflakes to the larger ones.

3. To attach the large snowflakes to the macrame hoop you will want to add a line of glue on the hoop itself and press the snowflake on the hoop. Once the glue has cooled, gently tip the hoop over and add glue across the back of the hoop on to the back of the snowflake. This will completely encapsulate the macramé hoop in glue on and around the back of the snowflake. If you just glue the snowflakes to the front of the hoop, they will pop off, but by surrounding the hoop with glue, it helps the snowflakes stay on much better. Repeat as many times as you wish with different color snowflakes and sizes of macramé hoops to create your own DIY snowflake decorations assortment.

Project 3 | DIY Winter Pine Cone Wreath

1. Paint the edges of your pine cones using the metallic paint and brush. Set painted pine cones tips up to dry. You’ll also cut the baby’sbreath stems into shortened bunches and spray paint. Prep your wreath form by painting it with the metallic paint. This will help camouflage any areas that may show through after pine cones are attached to the foam.

2. When the wreath form, pine cones, and baby’s breath are dry, you’ll glue your pine cones to your wreath form covering the front, inside, and outer side edge. (Leave the back of the wreath form empty for easy hanging.) If you have a variety of sizes, attach the large pine cones first and then fill in with the small and medium pine cones. This will require a lot of glue to keep the pine cones in place. You may need to hold the pine cone until it sets depending on the positioning.

3. Continue attaching pine cones to fill the wreath form.

4. When the wreath is finished you’ll measure the length of ribbon you want to hang and double it to wrap around wreath. Secure edges together with hot glue.

Project 1 | Wood Slice Winter Garland

Decide how long you want your garland to be and select a handful of the larger wood slices to work with. The birch is soft enough to push the picture hanging screw into the wood without needing to pre-drill any holes. Avoid using the smaller wood slices as the screws may cause them to split.

1. Paint the front of the wood slices with a coat or two of the white acrylic paint. Use a ruler and a pencil to lightly draw a grid on the wood. Use a fine tip paintbrush to paint every other square with black acrylic paint. Paint the squares under and above the black squares with the gray acrylic paint. Mix the gray paint with a little of the white to make a lighter shade of gray and paint all of the squares next to the black squares with the lighter gray paint.

2. Once the acrylic paint is dry, use the snow writer to draw snow-flakes on the wood slices. Allow to dry completely. The snow writer will give the snowflakes a fun 3-D effect.

3. String the wood slices onto the pine garland through the picture hanging screws. Hang and trim the pine garland as needed.

Project 2 | Yarn-Wrapped Santa Treat Holders

instructions1. Run a small band of glue around the base of your pot. Quickly add your red yarn and hold in place until glue dries. This is where you’ll be glad you use the finger guards. Continue to wrap red yarn around the pot until you reach the lip of the pot. Then continue to wrap yarn around and around. I did three layers of yarn. Glue end using your glue gun.

2. Run a small band of glue around the top of the pot and glue white yarn in place. Continue to wrap white yarn around the entire top of the pot.

3. Add two black buttons to front of pot and now it’s time to fill our Santa DIY Christmas treat holders. I filled a few with homemade cookies for a fun neighbor gift and teacher gift.

1. Distribute the notecards to the kids. We decorated the envelopes that came with the cards too! Place a small amount of paint onto a paper plate or scratch piece of paper. Make sure to place the notecards with the opening at the bottom.

2. Place your finger sideways to make oval snowmen.

3. When the paint is dry, you can begin to “dress” your fingerprint snowmen, and give them faces.

like to think so! These color dipped tree sugar cookies are not only tasty, but oh-so-pretty to look at. Plus, they are much easier to

make than frosting cookies with royal icing!

To get a few of my colors, I mixed the standard colored candy melts together along with a drop or two of food coloring gel mixed with a little coconut oil. The coconut oil helps distribute the coloring and

prevent the coating chocolate from seizing.

1. Begin by creaming together the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl for 1 -2 minutes. Then add the egg, vanilla, and salt. Mix until just combined. Then add all the flour at once and pulse until the dough just comes together. Next, roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut out your tree sugar cookies (or any shape works!). Bake on a parchment lined baking sheet in a 350°F oven for 8-10 minutes until just set. Remove from the oven and cool.

2. Once cool, place a cup or two of candy melts into a microwave safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds stir and then heat again until just melted.

3. Then simply dip a portion of the cookies into the melted candy coating and place on a piece of parchment paper to let the coating set.

1. Carefully remove the tops from the card holder ornaments. With the ornament tilted, pour paint colors of your choice down the sides of the ornament all the way around. Make sure to keep the card holder ornament tilted as your pour in the paint so that it doesn’t go straight to the bottom.

2. Lay the ornaments on their sides in the carton to allow for the paint to marbleize and for the excess paint to drip out of the ornaments. Rotate them about every 20 minutes to make sure that every side of the card holder ornaments are swirled. Once all sides have marbleized, place the ornaments opening side down in their carton to allow any remaining paint to drain out.

3. Using a small paint brush, apply a thin layer of gilding adhesive on the bottom half of the card holder ornaments.

4. After the gilding adhesive has set for about 20 – 30 seconds, place small strips of gold leaf on the adhesive coated areas. Handle the gold leaf with care as it is very delicate; also make sure your hands are dry or the gold leaf will stick.

5. Allow the gold leaf to set for a few minutes and then use a firm brush to dust away the excess gold leaf and create some textural variations on the card holder ornaments.

6. Place the tops back on the gilded DIY card holder ornaments.

1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Add the candy melts to the squeeze bottle and melt according to the directions on the back of the bag. Squeeze the melted chocolate out onto parchment paper in the shape of a melted snowman and add a lollipop stick. This is the best part because you can’t mess this up.

2. Press your candy accessories into the melted chocolate to look like a snowman. Let the candy set before removing from parchment paper.
