34 DAYS155 EVENTS

DEAR FRIENDS,

Our 2020 season examines love from five very different perspectives. Love as a covenant: The Magic Flute; Love conquers differences: She Loves Me; Love as a work in progress: I Do! I Do!; Love as a catalyst for forgiveness: Joseph and Love destroyed by revenge, vengeance and hate: Sweeney Todd.

In 1977 a group of scientists, artists, musicians, authors and inventors determined to send a capsule into space containing the highest achievements of mankind. It took only a matter of minutes for the music panel to unanimously select Mozart’s Queen of the Night’s aria Der hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen. Written in 1791 as Mozart was dying, it

depicts ancient sacred rites where the covenant of a virtuous bond between man and woman is essential to exaltation.

One of the pinnacle theatrical experiences of my life was seeing I Do! I Do! in 1966 starring Broadway icons Mary Martin and Robert Preston. Based on the play The Fourposter and set to music by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, we journey through the married life of Michael and Agnes from early marriage to moving to a retirement home. Starring Michael Ballam and Suzan Hanson in the intimate Utah Theatre.

In 1963, the year before Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Boch scored their historic success with Fiddler on the Roof, they set to music the 1940 movie Shop Around the

Corner with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan. The result was the adorable gem of a musical, She Loves Me. Revived five times since its premiere, it inspired the beloved motion picture You’ve Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. In spite of all odds, love conquers through brilliant humor and pathos in this charming “music box” of a show.

Broadway changed on March 1, 1979, when the curtain rose on Sweeney Todd. Based on a British legend, it illustrates the life-lesson moral that revenge and hate destroy us and often those we love. The profound dramatic impact of Sweeney Todd began a new era in American Musical Theatre: tales of tremendous emotion that force the audience into the midst of the conflict.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat had its first American staging 50 years ago. You’ll love this lively and amusing tale bursting with excitement and music from all genres. It’s the second biggest seller of our 200+ productions and you’ll see why.

Come and share the magic of our 28th Season!

JOSEPH and the AMAZINGTECHNICOLOR DREAMCOATFollow Joseph as he is sold into Egypt. Told completely in song, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is one of the most celebrated and dazzling musicals of all time. It’s big. It’s flashy. It’s fun! It’s a biblical satire you’ll never forget complete with Elvis, music from calypso to cowboy tunes and a powerful lesson in the end. Utah Festival’s Joseph is nothing short of spectacular. Don’t miss it!

SHE LOVES MEGeorg and Amalia are coworkers who don’t get along. Thankfully they each find comfort in letters from anonymous pen pals. If only they knew they were corresponding with each other! ORIAM

Fred C. Adams was an enormously impactful supporter, advisor and mentor of the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre. He guided Founding General Director Michael Ballam every step of the way from concept to fulfillment. Fred was still advising Michael from his home regarding the Festival five days before he died in Cedar City. Fred was born in Cedar City in 1931, spending his early years in Parowan, Delta and Montpelier, Idaho. He served at the Pentagon during the Korean War, in charge of entertainment and morale. He was a professor at Southern Utah University for 38 years.

In 1961, Fred and his wife Barbara dreamed up their craziest scheme to date: a Shakespearean festival in the hot Utah desert. With blood, sweat, tears and glitter, they built the Utah Shakespearean Festival into the renowned institution it is today.

Throughout his career, Fred received a myriad of prestigious awards and recognitions, including the coveted Tony Award, and served as executive producer for 44 years. The budget for that first season was $1,000 and they sold 3,000 tickets. Today USF attracts 100,000 patrons with an annual budget of $8 million.

In 1994, the second season of the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre, Hyrum Smith, with his wife Gail, made the single largest donation in the history of the Company. Their belief in Founder Michael Ballam’s vision of a world-class festival in Logan prompted them to create a fund that capitalized the emergence of the Festival from its infancy to international attention today.

Hyrum was born in 1943. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, he graduated from BYU in 1971 in business management and was awarded three honorary doctoral degrees. He cofounded Franklin Quest in 1983 and helped to develop the Franklin Day Planner. The company bought Stephen R. Covey’s leadership company in 1997 and changed the name to FranklinCovey. Hyrum traveled the world teaching people how to gain control of their lives and to bridge the gap between what they value most and what they are actually doing about it.

Hyrum helped found and fund Tuacahn outdoor performing arts center in St. George, Utah, in 1995 and guided it to its present renowned success. A prolific writer, his books, seminars and presentations have been acclaimed by both American and international audiences.

Did you know our ticket income covers just one-third of what it takes to bring world-class musical productions to the stage? We need your help. The generosity of loyal patrons like you is vital to our present and future success.
