Crea ve & Therapeu c Arts Team As we approach the end of a great term, we will be saying goodbye (for now) and sending our best wishes to Jo Kinsey, our Yoga Instructor who is going on maternity leave. Yoga sessions will be run by a new teacher, Jo Aris, from January 2017. Jo is an experienced yoga practitioner who is also trained in the ‘Special Yoga’ approach. We look forward to working with Jo and welcoming her to the Team. Useful website: http://specialyoga.org.uk/

We have had a positive start to the year in the music room, with all class groups exploring music from different cultures and cultural festivals. This topic has allowed students to explore a wide variety of different instruments (from percussion, to violins, to the accordion), encouraging creativity and free, interactive music-making.

During this half tem, we had a visiting musician from the Worshipful Company of Musicians. Catriona McDermid, an accomplished Bassoonist, came to perform and provided an interactive session for 5 of our class groups. Students were able to listen to and experience different types of music played on the bassoon, have a go at feeling and playing the reed of the instrument, feeling the instrument itself and the vibrations it creates when played, as well as joining in with the singing and sound effects for ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. We will continue to work with the Musician’s Company, and look forward to welcoming a different musician next term.

Students have had a positive year in Massage Therapy, exploring different strokes and developing increased awareness of their bodies. Working with a familiar adult, sessions encourage mindful touch and as we approach the end of term, students have been starting to explore story massage – most recently ‘The Snowman’.

We have continued to work with Lisa Mildner, a dance teacher from Step Into Dance (a partnership between Jack Petchey and the Royal Academy). Lisa works with two class groups across each term, facilitating participation and exploration through movement, using music and props.

We continue to offer Music Therapy and Dance Movement Psychotherapy for students throughout the school. If you would like further information about either of these therapies, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Fiona Woodworth on the following email: [email protected] (Music Therapist/CTA Co-ordinator) Useful websites: http://www.bamt.org/ http://admp.org.uk/

Wishing everyone a relaxing Christmas break and a fantastic 2017!

Visiting the Reindeer. Class 5 went to Garsons Farm to visit the reindeer. There were two—Storm and Glacier. Then we washed our hands and walked through a forest of Christmas trees. We enjoyed the feel and smell of the pine needles. Inside, we went around the many beautiful Christmas trees and explored lots of different decorations. Some of us did a little shopping.

Residential and Extended Activities

Dear Parents/Carers

We have had an extremely busy and thoroughly enjoyable term to date.

Scouts

The Scout group participate in a mixed evening where they can play games, engage in arts and crafts and also work toward their badges. This year the group celebrated the Queen’s birthday, they made her a tactile birthday card with the writing in Moon and Braille. Her Majesty sent a thank you letter.

Magical Quest

On the 19th December Magical Quest Theatre Company visited and performed a “Christmas Show” in the Apogee Centre. This is a professional theatre company that visits schools and other organisations to perform entertaining productions. We had three actors who performed various roles of the story Robin Hood, they provided an entertaining and enjoyable evening with audience participation.

Christmas Choir

On the 12th December we had a visit from the Dover House choir, which was 20 people strong, they sang various Christmas hymns and songs. It was a great evening, enjoyed by both the pupils and the staff. Zoe, Isabel and Lily joined the choir for a couple of hymns. I would like to take the opportunity to thank The Dover House Choir for giving up their time and providing a fantastic evening.

Residential Christmas Party

On the 15th December Aly organised the residential Christmas party, held in the Apogee Centre. Music was provided by Matt, there was lots of dancing and lots of food. Santa made an appearance giving each pupil a gift.

Music group

On Mondays we have a music session for all the children and young people, provided by Dennis, music tutor. This is a great opportunity for our pupils to play various instruments and have a

fun time. Each week we have ten pupils participating. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dennis for these sessions and Linden Lodge Charitable Trust for funding the music group.

Crystal Palace party

On 29th November a group attended the annual Crystal Palace Football Party. Father Christmas and the football team also attended, they served the pupils and staff with food and refreshments. The evening was a great success and the pupils came away with lots of gifts.

Dance group

Lisa, from L. E. M Dance School, provided a weekly dance workshop on Thursday evenings, pupils from each unit attend and participate in various dance techniques.

Birthdays

We have celebrated a number of pupil’s birthdays with parties or meals out. The pupils are given a choice in how they would like to celebrate their birthday. Families and carers are welcome to visit during the evening and join in the celebrations; it’s always a joy to see you there.

Sensory Stories

The Sensory Story Club, organised by Sharon, is going extremely well. The club gives our pupils the opportunity to listen to and participate in tactile stories read to them. The sessions are every Monday evenings and take place in The Mendoza Library. The stories are specialist sensory based and are especially for our pupils who have profound multiple learning difficulties (PMLD).

Summer Play Scheme 2016

Linden Lodge & Wandsworth Sensory Support Service Holiday Play Scheme ran from the 25th July – 5th August 2016. In total we had 46 children and young people in attendance.

The groups had access to all the facilities of the school e.g. sensory gardens, multi sensory rooms, swimming/hydro pools, playground and all the various equipment within school.

The children and young people participated in a variety of activities planned for the duration of the scheme. Some of the activities were either room based or out in the playground. We also used the fitness suite, gym and the Apogee Centre, equipped with ground level trampolines and sensor, tactile walls and multi media system for greater choice.

Deputy Head of Residential Care & Extended Services

The After School Club comprises of two evenings of activities, Tuesdays and Thursdays for Wandsworth day pupils and a small number of pupils from other Wandsworth schools and outer borough pupils.

The emphasis of the After School Club is for day pupils to be given the opportunity to develop and participate in a wide range of after school activities alongside our residential pupils. On Tuesdays we make good use of the school facilities e.g. sensory rooms, swimming/hydro pool, and we play a mixture of adapted sports and games.

Dear Parents and carers

It was lovely to see so many of you at the Christmas concert for Primary and Secondary pupils last week.

The children and staff very much enjoyed performing and worked very hard in preparation. All of the children took part and had a very active role celebrating Christmas. It is at the concerts where many children exhibit sheer joy at performing in front of their families. Their faces, having fun, smiling, singing and playing is a wonderful reflection on our community. We are very proud of what your children bring and what they achieve.

Thank you so much for supporting them and supporting the school. Your contribution as parents/carers is very important to us and we very much want to further build the home/school partnership in 2017 with the completion of the Family Centre for training, development and assessment in June.

Throughout the term we have had a large number of Annual Reviews and EHCP transition planning meetings. We would like to thank all parent/carers for both your support and very importantly your invaluable contribution to the process. These reviews are for your child and you have both high aspirations and expectations that the process will ensure your child’s needs are best possibly met. The time you have invested is very much appreciated by us all and we want to do our very best.

Can we take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2017.

With all good wishes.
