Budgets are hard to decipher. Markets even harder.

If anyone planned to make some money on budget day, they were in for arude shock. Millions waited anxiously for each sentence to drop fromPranabs mouth in TV, and the more discerning were scouring messageboards to know what was the analysts take about that just dropped line.

Midway into the budget came the unanimous verdict - budget is not verypopulist, but good for economic growth. Within minutes, Sensex waszooming. By the time Pranab ended his talk, Sensex had lost all senses - agood 500 to 600 points up.

Then the reality slowly started sinking in. What was there so easilydecipherable? That auto has been spared an excise hike? That smaller IT

firms will take a larger beating? Nothing much else was easily decipherable.

Within minutes of the budget speech ending, the Sensex started tumbling, accelerated by IT and only somewhat sparing the autos. Within the next 30minutes, 250 points were wiped off, and it didnt stop there. By the timetrade closed, another 125 points were lost.

If you are not into F&O, you would miss the gravity of the situation. Formany investors who took positions on that day, and was caught on thewrong foot, the losses would have been roughly Rs. 10,000 for every onelakh of trading.

But that was not all. Many investors, smarting from huge losses, took up

reverse positions, vowing to avenge the next day - they were sure of onething - market is set to collapse.

But overnight, heavyweight brokerages prepared their budget analyses. The general consensus was this - the government has curbed its ownborrowing, interest rate looks capped, and if crude can correct a bit, thereis no reason why markets cant rally again!

And crude eased a bit the next day, FIIs rushed to cover their massive

    budget joins stock-market circus

shorts, and the markets rallied over 600 points, further damaging retail traders.

This must be the reason why ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala advises retail investorsto steer clear of any kind of intra-day or short-term trading. According to him, theoreticallymany can master stock trading, but it would be necessary to lose many battles, to diemany times, before a retail trader can be successful.

Never think the circus is over. Two days after the budget also, investors are scouring againfor determining the sustained upside or damage for each sector from the budget.

And a new consensus verdict is coming, and it is again a reverse position - what theGovernment is intending is good, but it is not likely to be achieved! Interest rates mayagain inch up, and rate sensitives - from financial stocks to real estate to autos - are all setfor another round of thrashing

And in the confusion, many core elements other than the budget is being overlooked. Ifyou delve deep into the recent stock-market correction, it was driven by only one thing -FIIs and DIIs withdrawing. And why did they withdraw?

All stock-market corrections are fundamentally corrections in earnings-valuations. Thistime also the same has happened, starting from the October-November-December quarter.Across-the-board inflation in industrial inputs, commodities, and crude has (and is)continuing to squeeze margins for most industries, pushing down their earnings-valuations.

And the consensus on earnings-valuations is that the worst is yet to come - in the Q4results. Markets might go up a bit on Libyan crisis easing the pressure on crude, butlooking up until April, the outlook remains grim.

And dont expect much support for the markets from this Government. At least in theirintentions, they are more concerned about economic growth which doesnt work againstinflation, and as such will always be at loggerheads with the markets. And lately, they havestarted to admit some truth too - everything - read crude, coal, & metals - is not under theircontrol.

Even amidst this grim scenario, Seasonal Magazine gets into the art and science of stock-picking to bring you 12 stocks that look quite attractive after recent corrections on multipleparameters - track-record in wealth creation, fundamental performance, and dividend yields.

Because, the best stocks are bought when the wider market is throwing them away.

articipants in an 8 week mindfulnessmeditation class experienced structuralbrain changes including increased grey-

matter density in the hippocampus, known to be important for learning and memory, andin structures associated with self-awareness,compassion and introspection. This is the first researchto document meditation-produced changes in thebrain. Previous research has identified differences inbrain activity and structure between practisedmeditators and non-meditators.

Researchers noted that long-term meditation altersbrain-wave patterns, with greater activity in braincircuits involved in attention. They also found thatbrain regions associated with attention and sensoryprocessing were thicker in meditators than in controls. The question was whether people with a thicker braincortex in areas associated with awareness and sensoryprocessing were more likely to meditate.

The current study is the first to document that thesestructural changes are in fact produced by meditation.

"This study demonstrates that changes in brainstructure may underlie some of these reportedimprovements and that people are not just feelingbetter because they are spending time relaxing," saidstudy author Sara Lazar, PhD, of the MGH Psychiatric

    COMMONDISEASES

    Neuroimaging Research Program.

During the study MR images of participants' brainstructure were taken two weeks prior to and

immediately following an eight week mindfulnessbased stress reduction programme. MR brain imageswere also taken of a control group over a similar timeinterval.

The meditation courseconsisted of weeklymeetings includingguided meditation andaudio meditations to do at home on a daily basis.Analysis of MR images found increased grey-matterdensity in the hippocampus, known to be important

for learning and memory, and in structures associatedwith self-awareness, compassion and introspection.Participant-reported reductions in stress also werecorrelated with decreased grey-matter density in theamygdala, which is known to play an important rolein anxiety and stress. "It is fascinating to see the brain'splasticity and that, by practicing meditation, we canplay an active role in changing the brain and canincrease our well-being and quality of life." says BrittaHlzel, PhD, first author of the paper and a researchfellow at MGH and Giessen University in Germany.

    Further health benefits of meditation

Several studies designed specifically to understand thebeneficial effects of meditation have shown that meditationhelps to prevent heart disease, reduce pain, reduce bloodpressure, reduce cholesterol, decrease anxiety and helpmanage asthma.

Meditation has been shown to increase alpha waves (relaxedbrain waves) and decrease production of the stress hormonecortisol. It appears that some of the positive physical changesassociated with meditation have their roots in stressmanagement.

    Conditions benefitted by meditation

Pain: There is a body of research work indicatingthat meditation can reduce chronic pain3. One notable studyconducted at the Texas Tech University found that meditation

in conjunction with traditional medicine enhances theeffectiveness of western medical treatment. In another studypublished in the Journal of Behavioural Medicine, patientssuffering from backache, chronic migraine and tensionheadaches were able to significantly reduce pain medication.Another study found that people who meditate regularly findpain less unpleasant.

HIV: There is emerging evidence from other studiesthat shows that meditation and behavioral stress-managementprograms can buffer HIV declines in HIV-positive people.

High Cholesterol:In two prospective, random assignment studies, meditation reduced totalcholesterol over a relatively short period (three months) aswell as a long period (11 months).

Anxiety and Depression:Since the early sixties, scientists have speculated thatmeditation improves mental functioning. Meditationdecreases oxygen consumption, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure, and increases the intensity of alpha, theta, and delta brain waves, the opposite of the physiologicalchanges that occur during the stress response.

Diabetes: Meditation also aids in controllingblood sugar levels. Researchers at the University of Virginiahave shown that following meditation, reduced stress levelscorrelate with a decrease in blood glucose levels.

Hypertension: Besides its role as a stressbuster, meditation also reduces blood pressure andcontributes to the overall reduction in risk of cardiovasculardisease.Meditation is more that just a way for us to get intouch with ourselves and calm a busy mind. It appears thatmeditation has a direct effect on the physical body, brainactivity and underlying brain structure. So what are you

It's a pleasant morning ritual too painful to part with. But iscoffee good for your health? Similar to alcohol, the studies seemto seesaw back and forth. So when you're considering yourmorning coffee, here are some health facts to keep in mind:

    The Good

    1. Coffee Reduces YourRisk of Diabetes

In a 2005 review of nine studies, researchers found that for thosethat drank four to six cups of coffeeper day, versus only two or fewer, their risk for Type 2 diabetesdecreased by almost 30 percent. The number decreased by 35percent when people drank morethan six cups per day. And if you'repicturing yourself running aroundthe office with your eyes buggingout of your head, no worries

because caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees provided muchthe same results.

    2. Coffee Fights FreeRadicals

We often forget that coffee isactually a plant and like all plantfoods, the coffee bean containsmore than 1000 naturally occurringsubstances called phytochemicals,

which may help prevent disease. Many of these phytochemicals areantioxidants which protect the cellsfrom damage from free radicals.

    3. Coffee ImprovesMemory and Cognition

Researchers reported thatvolunteers who drank caffeinatedcoffee in the morning performedbetter than nondrinkers on tests

that involved learning newinformation. Coffee can alsoimprove cognitive function as weage. One study found thatcombining coffee with a sweet treathad an even bigger impact.According to study researcherJosep M. Serra Grabulosa, fromthe Department of Psychiatry andClinical Psychobiology at

Universidad de Barcelona: Ourmain finding is that thecombination of the two substancesimproves cognitive performance interms of sustained attention andworking memory by increasing theefficiency of the areas of the brainresponsible for these twofunctions. This supports the ideaof a synergistic effect between twosubstances, in which each oneboosts the effect of the other.

skin. This is a result of dehydrationwhich is the worst thing for yourskin. So when you're drinking thatmorning cup or two, make sure thatyou're pairing it with water. Evenbetter, add 1 tablespoon of chiaseeds to your water and let themsit for 30 minutes. The chia seedskeep you even more hydrated than

regular water.3. Coffee Can ActuallyCause Weight Gain

The blood sugar fluctuations thata caffeine high produces cancontribute enormously to cravings, according to iVillage. Coffee isalso socially connected to food. For example, we pair coffee withdessert or that morning powdereddoughnut. Additionally, when we

crash from our caffeine high that'swhen we reach for all sorts of fattysnacks to keep us going.

    4. Conventional CoffeeIs Laden with Pesticides

The coffee plant is one of the mostheavily sprayed crops. It's coatedwith chemicals, pesticides, andherbicides, nothing you'd want to

be ingesting. If you do drink coffee, make sure that it's the organicvariety, free from assortedchemicals that leech into ourground water and can make us sickdown the road. If you switch todecaffeinated coffee, make sure thecaffeine is removed in a naturalway without the use of chemicalsto do it. Often times, conventionaldecaffeinated coffee has morechemicals than regular.

    The Bad1. Coffee Can IncreaseOsteoporosis

Its true that coffee can cause thebody to excrete calcium in urine. We don't want the body to rid itselfof calcium because this can leadto osteoporosis. According to TheDiet Channel, about five

milligrams of calcium is lost perevery six ounces of coffeeconsumed. But these calciumlosses can be counter balancedwith two tablespoons of milk oryogurt per cup of coffee.

You've heard it a thousand times: if you want to fall asleep you have togive up caffeine. So you've done that and you still can't seem to sleepthrough the night. Well, your diet has a huge bearing on the way youfeel especially if a sleep deficiency has become a part of your life.Choose foods that promote sleep rather than keeping you up all night.

    1. Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are a great sourceof magnesium which serves tocalm the body down. Magnesiumhelps to relieve the stress that cankeep us up all night. Just 1 oz. ofpumpkin seeds has 151 mg of mag-nesium, making it one of the mostmagnesium-rich foods out there. 2. Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese contains tryp-tophan, a sleep inducing aminoacid that relaxes the entire body

and mind. If you don't do dairy youcan also find tryptophan in soymilk, tofu, hummus, and lentils.

    3. Sesame SeedsSesame seeds are rich in trytophanbut they're also high in carbohy-drates with a medium protein con-tent, perfect for before bedtime.

    4. Brown RiceWhole unrefined grains like brownrice have a calming effect on themind. They soothe the nervous sys-tem so that the mind stops movinga mile a minute and you can fallasleep. Also consider oats for asimilar effect.

    5. SpinachChlorophyll-rich foods like spin-ach help you get to sleep. Spinach, like pumpkin seeds, is also loadedwith magnesium, which calms andde-stresses the entire body.

The 787 Dreamliner program maybe three years behind schedule andbattling a legacy of delays, but thatisn't stopping Boeing from buildingthe next generation airplanes oneafter another.

Yesterday, as the last act of a three-day media extravaganza timed toBoeing's Sunday unveiling of the747-8 Intercontinental, I got achance to take a first hand look atthe Dreamliner assembly line.

By now, the story of the 787 is well-chronicled. Originally unveiled onJuly 8, 2007, (07/08/07) the plane

All that drama aside, asan airplane nut, it was

a lot of fun to get a

chance to see the 787assembly line in

person. For one thing, there's nothing like

    seeing industrialproduction on the scale

of Boeing's Everettplant said to be the

largest building in theworld, by volume.

was supposed to take its first flightlater that year and begin carryingpassengers in the spring of 2008.But one delay after another, causedby mechanical problems, work

stoppages, supplier slowdowns, and even an on-board fire, has todate kept the all-new plane out ofthe hands of Boeing's carriercustomers.

But it has made its first flight aswell as many subsequent flightsand in a media briefing today,Scott Fancher, the vice presidentand general manager of the 787program, reiterated what Boeinghas said previously: that it will

hand the plane over to its launchcustomer, All Nippon Airways, sometime in the third quarter ofthis year.

All that drama aside, as an airplanenut, it was a lot of fun to get achance to see the 787 assembly linein person. For one thing, there'snothing like seeing industrial

production on the scale of Boeing'sEverett plant said to be the largestbuilding in the world, by volume. For another, because of itsadvanced body made fromcomposite materials rather thanmetal seeing the 787 in itsunfinished form is downright cool.

Rather than having the standardbrushed metal look common toother in progress Boeing planes, theDreamliner fuselage comes

delivered to Everett via thegargantuan custom cargo 747known as the Dreamlifter with apristine glossy white primer. Thatmakes the plane look clean andpromising in a way that the othersthat I've seen in progress in Everetthaven't.

But that's neither here nor there. AsBoeing moves toward putting theDreamliner in the hands of ANA

and other carrier customersincluding Air India, for which oneof the planes I saw was being builtit's an important sign that it is

turning the planes out at a rate oftwo aircraft a month.

The company line is that Boeingwill build between 25 and 40 747-8 Intercontinentals and Dreamliners

this year, split roughly 50/50. ButFancher explained that by late 2013,when the aviation giant's new SouthCarolina assembly plant is up andrunning, it will be turning out 10787s a month.

For now, though, with the plane stillin testing, the planes coming off theline aren't going anywhere. Indeed, until they're certified for flyingpassengers, Boeing isn't even

building out their interiors orputting engines on them. That'sbecause that work, and that gear, isexpensive, and the company feelsit is better to simply stockpile theplanes in Everett where it currentlyhas 24 Dreamliners sitting onvarious tarmacs until certification. At that point, it shouldn't take toolong to get the planes ready fordelivery, though Fancher wouldn'tspecify precisely how long.

    Position Zero

As it is currently laid out, theDreamliner assembly line takes up

a single, albeit huge, bay in theEverett plant. When the giantfuselage barrels because they aremade from composite materials, thefuselage is not comprised of body

panels but rather complete tube-shaped sections come off theDreamlifter, they are transportedinto the plant via a massive door.

All Dreamliner parts are first placedin what is called "position zero,"where they will sit for 24 hours toensure that they can all adjust to thetemperature. Next up is "positionone," where all the major parts arestructurally joined. Then it's on to"position two," where the landing

gears are added, making it possiblefor the young Dreamliners toproceed ahead on their own wheels. On any given day, then, Boeing hasfour Dreamliners underconstruction, one each at positionone, position two, position three, and, yes, position four. As youmight expect, each successiveposition means more progresstoward completion.

According to Fancher, Boeing is 80percent through certification testingon its 787 Rolls-Royce engineconfiguration and about 60 percentthrough on certification testing forits General Electric engines. Todate, Boeing has seven Dreamlinersflying in its test program, and thecompany received over theweekend equipment needed fortesting fixes to the power panel thatcaused the fire aboard one of the

planes in November. And while some may be skepticalof Boeing's ability to get the 787 incustomers' hands, Fancher said thecompany is "on track" to meet itscurrent third quarter plan. For now, then, Dreamliner enthusiasts willhave to keep on waiting for theirfirst ride. But for those luckyenough to get to visit the plane'sassembly line here, that wait is justa little bit easier.

One blogger sitting in arandom New York Starbucks wasable to steal 20-40 Facebook iden-tities in half an hour. HTTPS solvesthis longstanding problem by en-crypting your login cookies andother data; in fact the inventor of

    1. Youre thievesMany businesses assume theircustomers would either be

dishonest or steal from them if leftto their own devices. No wonder:Shoplifting costs businessesupward of $25 million a day, according to one survey. But whenyou believe all customers wouldsteal from you, it becomes mucheasier to steal from them by makingdishonest or disingenuous productoffers and compelling them to payfor a service that should come witha product, like technical support.

    2. Youre big babiesCorporates routinely under-estimates the intelligence of its owncustomers by making offers thatinsult them. For example, it isntuncommon for a grocery store toprice a buy-one-get-one-free offerat a steep markup, which makes itless advantageous than simply

    BusinessesAssumeAboutCustomers

buying one. The store assumescustomers will see free and turnoff their brains. It doesnt helpwhen they actually do.Underestimating their intelligenceonly encourages employees to treatcustomers like kids or worse, sheep who will blindly follow anyorder.

    3. You only wantone thingEntire industries have changedtheir business models because they

assumed people only want onething: cheap products. Often, theyblame these decisions on customersurveys which say, time and again, that they only want cheap products whether theyre airline tickets orelectronics. But the surveys misleadthem. Customers may be price-conscious, but they also care aboutquality. They dont want to be nickel-and-dimed with fees when they buyan airline ticket, nor do they want

their gadgets to break down after a

few months. No, customers dontonly want one thing.

    4. Youre fickleHeres another dangerousassumption: That customers arebasically not loyal. In order to keepthem, you have to either removeessential services from your basicproduct (like airline tickets) andthen give them back to only your

most loyal customers, like elite-level frequent fliers, or you haveto trap them with an onerouscontract, like cell phones that forceyou to sign two-year contracts.Thats absurd. Providing a goodservice will keep customerscoming back, as ever. Take toomuch away from the product, ormake it too restrictive, and it willonly drive customers away.

    5. You dontunderstand we have abusiness to runWere not a nonprofit. We have abusiness to run. How often haveyou heard that? Its repeated sooften to me, as a consumeradvocate, that Ive lost count. Buttheres an assumption thatcustomers just dont understand the

hey steal. Theyre overgrownchildren. They only want adeal. Oh, the things

companies think of us, their valuedcustomers!

basics of business. And indeed, many dont. When they have a grievance, they often ask for the world, which suggests they have no understandingof how a business operates. Again, thats not necessarily true. Manycustomers do understand, but use an over-the-top request as a bargainingtactic. No, not all customers have MBAs, but they do understand thatbusinesses arent charities.

So whats the point of covering these unfortunate assumptions? Because,as a customer, its useful to know what youre up against when you goshopping. Owners and employees may believe youre dumb, dishonest, cheap, disloyal and ignorant. And as you know, nothing could be furtherfrom the truth.

INDIAMany feel this is Indias bestchance to win back the cup for thesecond time, having won the 1983edition. Bolstered by a team

having the likes of Tendulkar, andSehwag, Indians are feeling thatthis time around its now or never.Arguably, the most talented lot ofthis WC, the team would love toget hold of that trophy for their die-hard fans. Indians were off to agood start with 2 convincingwarm-up victories against themighty Aussies and New Zealand.A co-host, along with Sri Lankaand Bangladesh, India will be

assisted by the spin-friendly tracksof the sub-continent and beinggood players of spin, they pose abig threat to any team facing offwith them.

SOUTH AFRICAThe South Africans go into thisWorld cup as one of the primecontenders and this time aroundthey would surely like to live to

the expectations of their fans backhome. Needless to say, the SouthAfricans hold the dubious recordof faltering in big events, something they need to improveon. They have been given theunique tag of - The Chokers. They are a tough team to playagainst and they showed that witha thumping win over the Windiesin their first match of this edition.Historically, South Africa has

heavily depended on their pacebowlers to make a mark. But,against the Windies they showeda change in strategy by fielding 3regular spinners reflecting theirtactical and clever approach ofteam selection. They still havefiery pace bowlers in their ranksand the spinners too showed whythey are no pushovers. Definitelythe team to beat!

Captain: Graeme SmithPlayers to watch out for: AB De Villiers,Faf Du PlessissStrengths: Experienced batting line-upand a brilliant pace attack.Weakness: May find acclimatizationdifficult and looses track in big games.

    Captain: Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Players to watch out for: SachinTendulkar, Virat Kohli

    Strengths: Batting is Indias strength.

They have the ability to post hugetotals batting first and each player isa potential match winner. Crowdsupport will come in handy.

Weakness: A rusty pace-bowling unitand inability to chase down mammothtotals are a cause of worry.

    Captain: Ricky Ponting

Players to watch out for: ShaneWatson, Mitchell Johnson

Strengths: comes in with a goodreputation making them a verydangerous unit. Can spring asurprise through their pacebowling department having thelikes of Lee, Johnson and Tait.

The Australians began theircampaign as the No.1 ODI side. But this Aussie outfit isnt likethe previous golden generationof the Warne, McGrath,Gilchrist etc. But Australia, stilland will, always remain a toughopponent to beat consideringtheir fabulous record in WorldCups. They have remainedunbeaten in their last 31 WCencounters and that itself will

bring shivers down the spinesof many a team. They are thedefending champs for the thirdtime in a row having won the1999, 2003 and 2007 Worldcups. Australia comes into thisevent on the backdrop of a 6-1drubbing over England athome. If they can put their acttogether ,there is no reason whythey cant do it again.

The English are a much moreconfident squad which theyproved by drawing a nail-biting ,cliff-hanger of a game against

favourites India. The gameshowed that the England team canfight till the finish and can playaround their charismatic skipperAndrew Strauss, who proved hismettle by scoring a breath-taking158 in quick time. They are toutedas the dark horse of this WC andtheir job is pretty clear and simple:upsetting the top teams. They werebeaten by Australia in a bilateralseries (6-1), leading to the WC, butevery team realises that the score-line cant be taken into much ofan account considering theirenergetic and positive start to thismega event.

Controversies, Match fixing andallegations have been followingPakistani Cricket ever since thedark age of cricket. But, on the

cricketing aspect, Pakistan arefirm favourites to lift the ICCCricket World Cup. By beating SriLanka in the latters den is not apiece of cake and this has sent outa strong message to all those whodream of holding aloft the prizedpossession. Pakistan was aprospective co-host but politicalunrest back home has resulted theICC to strip them off match rights.Solely for this reason , the bad

boys of cricket will want to winthe trophy for their cricket-frenzyfans back home in Pakistan. Theyhave the ability to go all the wayand the team would love to restoreinternational cricket back inPakistan . One way of doing thisis to win back the heart of the ICCand the millions back home.

    SRI LANKA

A team having the likes ofMuralitharan, Jayawardena, aand Malinga are definitely ateam to reckon with. They arethe runners-up of the 2007 WCand will surely want to reach outfor glory in this edition.

Lankans are a good fielding unittoo which gives them an edgeover their rivals. There is nolack of experience in this teamand having world class play intheir ranks, the Sri Lankans areout to prove their critics wrong.Probable semi-finalists, theLankans are a tough team tobeat in their own den.

Captain: Kumar SangakkaraPlayers to watch out for: Lasith Malinga,Tilakertane DilshanStrengths: They have a deep batting line-upand a very good spin attack which caneffectively utilize juicy, turning wickets...Weakness: like every other subcontinentteam, sri lanka too face problems ofchasing down mighty scores. Their middle-order needs to fire to ensure a smoothentry into the final stages of the WC.

    ENGLAND

Captain: Andrew StraussPlayer to watch out for: KevinPietersen, Tim BresnanStrengths: Showed that they canchase down huge targets and

have the players who are capableof playing long innings, someonelike a Jonathan Trott..Weakness: The English have beenpoor on the field letting go offpractically sitters. Their bowlingtoo needs to click as theyve beenhit for more than 250 runs inback-to-back matches, even byminnows Netherlands.

    PAKISTAN

    Captain: Shahid Afridi

Players to watch out for: Umar akmal,Shahid afridiStrengths: batting prowess is pakistanskey to success. They playb their cricketfearlessly thereby creating thepossibilities of causing huge upsets.Weakness: The opening slot has beenwhere Pakistan has juggled with themost, trying out more than 10 differentplayers in the past year or so.Pakistans complacency may lead totheir downfall too

    h, to be young again.

    Three travelers were

    selected via an online

vote to go on a year-

    long adventure that took them

through 186 countries covering275,000 miles. This event was

    Coca-Colas Expedition 206. The

    participants were Tony from

    Munich, Germany; Kelly from

    Martelange, Belgium, and

    Antonio from Mexico City,

    Mexico.

The goal of this boondoggle was towhat makes people happy around the

world. Upon their return to Atlanta, Icaught up with them for this interview.

Q: Cutting to the chase, what makes

    people happy around the world?

A:Family and friends, food, sports, music, health those are the mainanswers we have gotten. Its all aboutsharing with others.

    Q: Nobody mentioned money?

A: Very, very few people mentionedmoney. When they did, it wasnt aboutloads of money for the sake of buying

Mean?stuff or being rich. It was more abouthaving more money for the freedomto travel more or spend more time withfriends and family and things like that.

Q: Do you think that people are more

different or more similar around the

    world?

A: People definitely have more thingsin common than differences. Whetheryoure in Asia, South America orEurope you have the same idea of whatmakes you happy.

Q: If you could give Barack Obama

one piece of advice, what would it be?

A: Our experience showed us thepower of bringing people andcountries together by finding sharedexperiences and making meaningfulconnections. That sort of bondinghelps break down barriers. Thatsprobably just as true for one-to-onepersonal connections as it is for bigger-picture relationship building.

Q: What was the most enchanting

    country that you visited?

A: This is a tough question becauseeach time we think of this, manycountries come to mind. I would saymaybe some of the Asian countriesbecause they have such a mystical, um,

enchanting feel to them. We reallyliked Japan and Thailand. The feel ofthose places and their cultures arereally something special.

Q: Which country has the best

    looking women?

A: The eastern European countriesdefinitely have some of the bestwomen in the world. The formerYugoslavia countries have one of thehighest concentrations of unbelievablybeautiful women in the world.Lebanon isnt so bad either.

Q: Which country has the best

    looking men?

A: In Latin America there are somesexy men around. They are also thebest dancers! We that found the highestpercentage of of handsome men is inthe Scandinavian countries.

Q: Which country has the best

    Internet access?

A:Europe, some parts of Asia, and the U.S.

Q: Which country would you pick to

    live in?

A: Kelly: I would like to live inArgentina and the Netherlands.

Tony: Germany, Croatia, and Thailand.Antonio: Japan and Iceland.

veryone loves their computers, and everyone hates their bankers. That'sthe in-a-nutshell takeaway from a recent survey about the perceivedtrustworthiness of a variety of industries.

Survey respondents from 23 different nations were asked how much theytrusted certain fields to "do what is right." Out of 16 industries, technology was consideredthe most trustworthy, followed by automotive, telecommunications, and food andbeverage. Unsurprisingly, the insurance, banking, and financial services industries wereat the bottom, considered nearly 30 percent less trustworthy than technology.

This is great news for Steve Jobs and Google, less great for the banking industry, whichcontinues to struggle with horrible public relations since the near financial collapse in

2008. It's also interesting to see how many people grant masses of leeway to tech andauto, whose list of transgressions is growing if not yet historically significant.

obert Nay, the creator ofBubble Ball, recentlydethroned Angry Birdsas the top free game inApple's App Store.

Nay's Bubble Ball, an addictivemulti-level physics game, managedto unperch the mega-popular AngryBirds from the number-one spot onthe free games list in mid-January.

The deceptively simple game getsincreasingly more challenging asplayers move objects around andmanipulate the laws of physics toget a ball through an obstaclecourse to the finish line.

Offering Bubble Ball as a freegame turned out to be a smartmarketing move -- to the tune of 6million downloads. That sets thestage should Nay decide to chargefor his next creation. He has alreadyissued an update for the game with

new levels and an improved lookon the larger iPad screen. If thesuccess of his first game is anyindication, Nay has a bright futurein game development.

Here is an interview with Nay onhis success secrets:

Where did you get theidea for Bubble Ball?

I had played games that had somesimilar ideas, but I mostly came upwith it myself.

How a14 Year OldBuilt the No. 1iPhone Game

Did you have business startupcosts associated with building yourfirst app and launching Nay

    Games?

The Apple Developer license theAndroid Market license and thelicense for Corona SDK, which iswhat I used to make Bubble Ball. There were also fees to create thebusiness. We already had a Mac

computer and iPod touch. Why did you decide to start Nay

Games rather than be a singleperson app publisher?

If I started a business, I couldexpand later, possibly with morepeople and games.

Why did you choose to developfor the Apple iOS platform?

I like their devices and have an iPodTouch.

You've been getting a lot ofmedia coverage. Did you initiallydo anything special to promoteBubble Ball?

Not really. Just telling friends andfamily and such.

How does it feel to topple thepopular app Angry Birds out of the

    No. 1 spot?

I think it's pretty awesome. I neverimagined my game could be thenumber-one top free game.

Have you faced any challengesas a young entrepreneur?

Probably just getting it started, andgetting brand recognition, which allthis publicity has really helped uswith.

What are your future plans forNay Games?

To make more games and possiblywrite an eBook about iPhone game

    development.

Is being a gaming entrepreneurwhat you want to do after finishing

school or do you have otherambitions?

Possibly. I want to do somethingwith computers for my career, likeWeb development or computerprogramming. But being a gamingentrepreneur is definitely a viableoption.

What advice do you have forother app developers?

Shoot for the stars. Put your mindto it and, most importantly, havefun.

Do you have any tips for gettingthrough Bubble Ball Level 12?

Put the triangle under the ball, thenyou have to place a gravity uppiece, then a gravity down piece. If you can't figure it out, check outthe solution.

Most 14-year-olds are watching TV, thinkingabout the school dance and spending waytoo much time on Facebook. Eighth-graderRobert Nay, meanwhile, used his spare timeto build a No. 1 iPhone app.

    In a new study from

    Stanford Graduate

    some cases negative

    publicity can

    increase sales when

    a product or

    company is relatively

    unknown, simply

    because it stimulates

    product awareness.

STANFORD GRADUATESCHOOL OF BUSINESSIn2009, after months of scathingmedia reports of cars that couldaccelerate out of control, Toyotahad an extremely expensiveproblem on its hands. Recalls, fines, and plunging sales resultedin losses to the auto manufacturerin the neighborhood of $2 billion.

But bad news isn't always bad forbusiness. After the movie Boratmade relentless fun of the nationof Kazakhstan, Hotels.comreported a 300% increase inrequests for information about thecountry, and a wine described as"redolent of stinky socks" by aprominent website saw its salesincrease by 5%.

In a new study from Stanford

    When IsBad PublicityGood?

Graduate School of Business, researchers say in some cases

negative publicity can increasesales when a product or companyis relatively unknown, simplybecause it stimulates productawareness.

"Most companies are concernedwith one of two problems," saysAlan Sorensen, associate professorof economics and strategicmanagement at the business schooland one of the authors of the study."Either they're trying to figure outhow to get the public to think theirproduct is a good one, or they'rejust trying to get people to knowabout their product. In somemarkets, where there are lots ofcompeting products, they're morepreoccupied with the latter. In thatcase, any publicity, positive ornegative, turns out to be valuable."

Looking at 240 fiction book titlesreviewed by the New York Times,

investigators found that positivereviews, not surprisingly, alwaysincreased sales by anywhere from32 to 52%. For books byestablished authors, negativereviews, also not surprisingly, ledto a 15% decrease in sales.

For books by relatively unknownauthors, however, negativepublicity had the opposite effect, increasing sales by a significant

45%. Follow-up studies affirmedthe reason: Even bad reviews drew

attention to works that otherwisewould have gone unnoted. Moreover, the "negative"impression bad reviews createdseemed to diminish over time.

In another study, participants readbook reviews that were eitherpositive or negative, on bookspenned either by well-known ornew authors. Some participantswere asked immediately to ratehow likely they would be topurchase such books, while otherswere given an unrelated task andlater asked if they would buy thebook.

For well-known books, negativepublicity resulted in less likelihoodof purchase, whether participantsreported their preferences rightaway or after a delay. However, forunknown books, the negativepublicity did not affect the

    likelihood of purchase after adelay.

"This suggests that whereas thenegative impression fades overtime, increased awareness mayremain, which can actually boostthe chances that a product will bepurchased," explains Sorensen, who authored the study with JonahBerger, PhD '07, now a facultymember at the Wharton School,

and alumnus Scott Rasmussen, BA'03, a Stanford undergraduateeconomics and mathematicsundergraduate at the time theresearch was being conducted.

The research indicates that newentrants may have little to losewhen it comes to publicity of anykind the key is simply to getseen. "Smaller producers," theauthors write, for example, "maywant to allow, or even fan, the

flames of negative publicity."Indeed, bad press, they suggest, may even serve as a form of directmarketing that can "slip under theradar" and be unrecognized as

such. Brand names, on the otherhand, have more at stake, asMcDonald's saw when a rumorcirculated that it used worm meatin its hamburgers: Sales decreasedby more than 25%.

Might the virulence of the negative

PR have bad effects, no matterwhat? When might scandalsunrelated to the quality of theproduct about the CEO or starassociated with it be

advantageous or disadvantageous? How exactly does publicityinfluence word of mouth, memory, and exposure to products? Suchquestions, say the authors, mayoffer interesting avenues for futureresearch.

there are free Android apps formost software needs at themarketplace. And Android'sstrategy of embracing all carriers /networks unlike IPhone's narrowselectivity of carriers is a big plus.

Better Screen SizeWith iPhone, you have one option forscreen size: 3.5 inches. But severalAndroid phones such as the Atrix,Droid X, HTC EVO, and Nexus Soffer screens 4 inches or larger. Thatextra space is excellent for users wholike to watch movies, play games, or

view full web pages on their phone.

Better CustomizationAndroid phones give you a ton ofoptions for customizing your homescreen. You can add live widgetsthat receive constant updates onweather, RSS feeds, and Facebookor Twitter updates. You can also

bookmark your favorite contactsdirectly on the home screen so youcan dial them with just a tap.

Better CameraMany Android phones like theDroid Incredible and the HTCEVO 4G have 8 megapixelcameras and shoot 720p HD video. While the iPhone 4 can shoot HDvideo, it only has a 5 megapixel

    camera.

Play HD Video on TVThere are many Android devicesthat offer HDMI ports for playingHD video on your big screen TV.Since it's unlikely the iPhone willever have a port other than thestandard iPod connector, you'llnever be able to watch true HD onyour TV by plugging it in.

Better MemoryMost Android phones will allowyou to expand and swap yourstorage with a removable SD card. This is useful for those who wantmore space for music, video, andapps than their phone allows out

    of the box.

Better ProcessorsStarting with the Atrix, we'rebeginning to see Android phonessport dual core processors that canoffer amazing speed for yourphone. We put one through itspaces and were impressed with theresults. The downside? All thatprocessing power will kill your

    battery.

Android is Moving to4G SoonThere's a huge wave of 4G Androidphones hitting the market this year. And that's on top of the handful thatare already available from Sprintand T-Mobile. The consensusseems to be we won't see a 4GiPhone until 2012 at the earliest.

LICscollection is up 52% year-on-year,whereas all others combined couldgrow only by 13%, which signalsthat the LIC juggernaut is growing400% faster than the rest of theindustry.

In the last quarter of this fiscal, LIC

expects to mop-up a record Rs.80,000 crore according toChairman TS Vijayan.

LIC also seems to have betteradapted to the new ULIP guidelines

implemented by IRDA around threemonths back. While LIC couldmarginally improve its Novemberperformance month-on-monthdespite the ULIP changes, theprivate insurers witnessed marginal

decrease in performance, withULIP-heavy insurers like ICICIPrudentials MoM figures down by34%.

The contrasting performance in thecase of ULIPs is significant, as thissegment also fares as one of LICscore growth areas. For example in2009-10, ULIPs constituted thefastest growing area for LIC, byabsolute amounts.

However, the overall performanceof LIC during FY10 wasalso good with the companyexcelling in both emerging areaslike group insurance andconventional segments like non-ULIPs for individuals. In fact, theonly trouble-spots for LIC wereannuities and single-premiumpolicies, where it witnessed a fall, but which was not enough to takethe sheen out of this outperformingfiscal where LIC grew its premiumsby over 18%, compared to theprevious fiscals 5% growth.

In a sense, it is correct to note thatLIC is not only unfazed by competition anymore, but
