head coach joan bonvicinithird season/southern Connecticut state ‘75

Joan Bonvicini, one of the most successful coaches in women’s collegiate bas-ketball history and former coach at the University of Arizona and Long Beach State, was named head coach of the Seattle University women’s basketball team on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009.

The veteran head coach enters her third season at Seattle University behind an all-time 626-340 (.648) record and is 26th on the NCAA all-time wins list for women’s college basketball at all levels. She became the 18th coach in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to reach the 600-win mark in February

2007. The Redhawk head coach also boasts 20 20-win seasons over her historic coaching career.

Seattle U showed significant improvement during the 2010-11 season, earning eight victories against a tough schedule. The team earned victories at Portland and at Long Beach State as well as home wins over Idaho, Navy, and Eastern Washington. Behind the work of Bonvicini, the Redhawks also hosted the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament, featuring Bowling Green, UALR, and Montana State, and the State Farm Holiday Classic, involving eventual national finalist Notre Dame, Elite Eight team Gonzaga, and Loyola Marymount.

Bonvicini helped guide the Redhawks through their first full season at the NCAA Division I level. During the season, she coached Seattle U to six DI victories in 2009-10. Under the first season head coach’s tutelage senior Ashley Brown to become the most prolific three-point shooter in SU history, behind 87 three’s in a single season. Brown was also named MVP of the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament, to the Longwood All-Tournament Team and to the All-Independent Second Team. Fellow senior Cassidy Murillo earned Seattle U Thanksgiving All-Tournament Team honors and junior Tatiana Heck was named to the All-Independent Second Team, as well.

In addition to their improvement and growth as a reclassifying institution on the court, the Redhawks saw great success in the classroom. Seattle U was named to the WBCA Top 25 Team Honor Roll among all NCAA DI institutions. The Redhawks were ranked No. 20 for their team cumulative grade point average of 3.341.

Prior to joining Seattle U, she coached 13 All-Americans and two former US Olympic Team members. While at Arizona, 54 student-athletes earned Pacific-10 accolades and 21 earned conference academic honors.

At Arizona, Bonvicini accumulated a 287-223 (.563) record over 17 seasons. She led the Wildcats to nine postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournament berths and the WNIT Championship in 1996. She was head coach at Arizona from 1991 to 2008.

Bonvicini is in five halls of fame: the Southern Connecticut State Hall of Fame (1989), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (1994), the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame (1996), the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame (2005), and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame (2007).

She started her head coaching career at Long Beach State in 1979, posting a 325-71 record (.821) in her 12 seasons with the 49ers. Long Beach State won 24 games or more every season with Bonvicini at the helm. The 49ers earned ten conference championships and ten straight berths in the NCAA Tournament, including Final Four appearances in 1987 and 1988.

With the 49ers, she was named the 1981 NCAA Division I Coach of the Year. Following the 1985-86 sea-son she was named the Region VIII and PCAA Coach of the Year. In 1984, she was named WCAA Coach of the Year and has also been honored by the city of Long Beach as their 1989 “Citizen of the Year”.

The East Coast native spent two seasons as an assistant at Long Beach State before being promoted to head coach at age 25. Prior to joining the 49ers, she began her coaching career as an assistant at Cal Poly - Pomona in Southern California.

A guard during her playing days, Bonvicini helped Southern Connecticut State earn third-and fourth-place finishes in the AIAW Championships. In 1975, she was named Region I-A MVP and an honorable mention All-American. She was a finalist for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team.

Transfers, key freshmen make Seattle U. womenbigger, more talentedCoach Joan Bonvicini's Seattle U. women's basketball team is optimistic heading into its third year of competition againstDivision I teams.

By Jayda EvansSeattle Times staff reporter

Seattle University's women's basketball team finallyhas the height and quickness needed to competeagainst Division I teams.

But how does that translate to winning?

"I'm cautiously optimistic," coach Joan Bonvicini saidat the team's media day Tuesday.

Brenda Adhiambo, a 6-foot transfer, and freshmanJessi Williamson, a 6-7 center from Mount Tahoma, added much-needed size. Former Oregon Statestandout Talisa Rhea, a 5-11 senior, and freshmanRenee Dillard-Brown (Garfield) will add speed andscoring.

Mixed with returning leading scorer Elle Kerfoot (13.7points) and spark plug Daidra Brown, Bonvicini findsherself able to push the team harder in preparationfor its third season against D-I opponents.

"I've definitely challenged these kids much harderthan I did my previous teams because this team hasbeen able to accept that challenge," she said. "Notonly have they reached it, they've exceeded it."

At practice Tuesday, there was more running and teaching as the Redhawks bobbled through drills.

"If there's no sense of urgency, I'll call you out," Bonvicini told her team.

Eligible for the Women's NIT and Women's Basketball Invitational this season, the Redhawks have set agoal of advancing to the postseason. They were 8-22 during the 2010-11 season, 4-10 at home.

"The expectations have gone up every year," said Rhea, who was honorable mention All-Pac-10 as ajunior at Oregon State, averaging a team-leading 15.3 points and 3.6 rebounds. "We feel really good aboutthe team that we have and the work that we've been putting in and where our season could go. We'reexcited to actually start playing and seeing it all come together."

"This year we have the ability to be a very good team," said Kerfoot, the final player from SU's D-II days."We're athletic and fast and we do play well together. We have a lot of different types of players who bring

The Redhawks begin play Nov. 2 with an exhibition against Puget Sound at Connolly Center. The regular-season opener on Nov. 11 is an immediate test, hosting UC Santa Barbara, which is picked to finishsecond in the Big West.

SU will play without senior post player Carley Butcher and promising freshman Kim Flournoy this season, each out with knee injuries. Forward Maggie McCarthy, who averaged 8.3 points and 5.3 boards as asophomore, returns from a torn right ACL.

"We know we're better, but we're not tested," Bonvicini said. "Until you're tested ... We still have a ton ofthings to learn and I'm excited. I like what I'm seeing and I like the effort."

• Guard Nichole Jackson, who had transferred from Portland State, has transferred again, to WarnerPacific College. Bonvicini did not offer a reason and Jackson, a former Auburn Riverside High Schoolstandout, was not available for comment.

Outside shooting powers Seattle UniversitywomenRedhawks to play Akron for tournament title

By Jayda EvansSeattle Times staff reporter

Three-pointers fell through the net and finallysomething felt great for Elle Kerfoot.

Earlier, the senior guard spent the majority of Fridayin bed, resting as much as possible to overcome flu-like symptoms.

By game time, she was tossing up three-pointers tohelp the Seattle University women's basketball teampost a 74-56 victory against San Francisco atConnolly Center.

The Redhawks advanced to the ThanksgivingTournament championship game. They will faceAkron at 8 p.m. Saturday. San Francisco will playLoyola of Chicago in the consolation game at 6 p.m.

"Now it's an ice bath and bed," Kerfoot said of herplans after scoring a game-high 19 points, includingmaking 4 of 5 three-pointers.

Seattle U (2-3) lost its previous three matchupsbecause of poor offensive execution. Therefore, coach Joan Bonvicini put her team throughstrenuous practices this week, working on theoffense and rebounding.

Against San Francisco, senior Talisa Rhea was ableto find Redhawks post players inside for assists whilesophomore Ashley Ward joined Kerfoot withimpressive three-point shooting, making all three shetook. As a team, Seattle U was 9 of 17 from three-point range.

Rhea had six assists and forward Kacie Sowell had10 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

The Redhawks jumped out to an early 23-4 leadafter a three-pointer by senior Maggie McCarthy. Ondefense, SU had USF struggling against its zone. The Dons shot 15.4 percent to open the game on 2-for-13 shooting.

The Dons finished the first half with a 9-3 run to close to 37-28 at the break. But Ward (14 points) openedthe second half with a layin and another three to keep SU's momentum going.

"It was bring your lunch pail to work," Bonvicini said of the mentality leading up to the game. "It was nojoke."

Seattle U had never played USF (1-5) before, but the Dons are led by coach Jennifer Azzi, an Olympianand former Stanford champion, and Bonvicini said in watching game film that Azzi ran plays similar toCardinal coach Tara VanDerveer. That made it a little easier to prepare a scouting report.

The Redhawks played well defensively to keep USF shooters Katy Keating (two points) and Rheina Ale(12) below their season averages.

"A lot of it is confidence," said Kerfoot, whose team has never won its own tournament. "It's good to get thewin. We worked hard this week, and it's nice to recover from that little slump."

In the first game, Akron ended a two-game skid with a 97-86 victory against Loyola (3-2) to advance.

The Zips were down by 12 points with 6:45 remaining in the opening half before the game turned into aseesaw matchup in the second half. After being tied at 77, a late flurry helped Akron (2-3) secure thevictory.

Junior guard Taylor Ruper led the Zips with 20 points. Teammate Rachel Tecca added 19 points and 14rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

For Seattle U coach Joan Bonvicini, Friday'sgame a special reunionThe Redhawks (2-4) host Long Beach State (2-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. Connolly Center.

By Jayda EvansSeattle Times staff reporter

Decades later and the conversations start the samefor Joan Bonvicini.

Sitting in a high school gym in Southern California, someone will inevitably walk up and say, "You don'tknow me but I was here when your Long BeachState teams were killing everybody." InstantlyBonvicini, now coach at Seattle University, is back inthe 1980s reminiscing about how her storied careerbegan.

"It happens every time I'm in California," saidBonvicini, who returned Thursday from a recruitingtrip in the state. She led the 49ers to the NCAAFinal Four in 1987 and 1988. "It's great. I think I'vegrown and I'm a better coach, but I was veryfortunate to have some of the best players that everplayed."

Names like Penny Toler and Cindy Brown demandedthe national spotlight. But the experience revealed aformula Bonvicini hopes she can use to give SeattleU the same type of acclaim one day.

The Redhawks (2-4) host Long Beach State (2-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. Connolly Center.

Plenty would scoff at Bonvicini's dream. The Redhawks are in their final season transitioning back to beinga Division I program, joining the WAC next season. But neighboring Washington recently hired a big-namecoach in Kevin McGuff, plays in better facilities and has the opportunity to air more games on television viathe new Pac-12 network.

Bonvicini disagrees.

"I wouldn't put the TV stuff at the top of the list," she said of a modern-day recruit's wants. "And I thinkfacilities are important, but I wouldn't put that at the top of the list, either. I think it's about relationships.

"People want to know that their kids are going to be coached well and that they're going to be treated welland that they're going to have a good experience. My dream and my goal is to do here what I did at LongBeach State."

Bonvicini quickly points to players like star post Elena Delle Donne choosing Delaware, vaulting the BlueHens to its first-ever national ranking (24), or even Princeton snagging top recruits from California asexamples that unknowns still have a chance to be competitive.

It just takes a mix of good coaching, talented players, a supportive administration, "and a little luck,"Bonvicini said.

SU has a good crop of young players and transfers. Bonvicini wants the program to start heavily recruitingtop players.

"Joan is a tenacious competitor," said Washington State coach June Daugherty, who's known Bonvicinisince both attended basketball camps as youths. "I don't care if it's basketball or getting in line for the bus,Joan is going to get first. She's amazing that way.

"Her years at Long Beach State were remarkable. And then she turned around and built a great program atArizona. ... Watch out Seattle U. There's going to be great things that come from that program just becauseof her competitiveness and passion. She's one of the better minds in the game."

Seattle U defeated LBS 73-54 on the road last season. Afterward, coach Jody Wynn and boostersorganized a gathering, bringing former players back. Wynn would like the 49ers to rekindle the glory daysBonvicini built with her program.

There won't be a similar celebration on Friday. But the memories will still be there, re-energizing Bonvicinito continue the path in Seattle.

"Any time Joan comes through town, they want to honor her," said Toler, who's currently general managerof the Los Angeles Sparks. She's another believer in Bonvicini turning around the Redhawks. "More thananything she's a great recruiter. Joan has the gift of gab. Two, she's warm and three, Joan will always seethe good in people. It's (building SU into an NCAA team) a more difficult task because you have a lot otherschools. ... But if I was betting on anybody to get it done, I would bet on Joan because she's relentless."

Just like those teams from the 1980s.

Seattle U women win third straight by beatingPortland, 69-55It's the first three-game winning streak for the program transitioning to Division I.

By Jayda EvansSeattle Times staff reporter

It's the little things that let you know you're headed inthe right direction.

Mark Seattle University's first three-game win streakunder third-year coach Joan Bonvicini as proof ofthat. The Redhawks achieved the streak with a 69-55 win against Portland on Sunday at ConnollyCenter.

"It's awesome," said SU senior Elle Kerfoot, who hasbeen with the program since 2008, when it was stillin Division II. "It's just so different. Like, mentally, it'sjust so different. Our whole team is confident andhappy and we're moving forward in the rightdirection."

It's a minor achievement in NCAA women's hoopscompared with Connecticut's 90-game win streak orStanford's current 65-game home win streak. Still,as SU completes its final year transitioning back toDivision I, the three consecutive wins, and four in itspast five, are proof the program will be competitiveon the top level.

"We're starting to become a dangerous, confidentteam," Bonvicini said. "Defensively, we're doing agood job. Obviously we need to do a little bit betterjob on the boards, but we're smart. We can scoreinside. We can score outside. ... We have moredepth and are just really coming together as a team. The biggest thing is we're having fun."

Sophomore wing Sylvia Shephard got the Redhawks going from the opening tip, making two early threes.Leading 24-22 with 5:18 remaining in the first half, SU went on a 12-3 run to enter the break with an 11-point advantage.

The Redhawks outscored the Pilots 9-0 to open the second half. Sophomore forward Ashley Ward led allSU players with 15 points.

"We have so many people and so many weapons when we're moving the ball and playing as a team," saidKerfoot, whose team had 15 assists on 27 field goals and shot 48.3 percent from the field in the secondhalf.

SOWELL STEPS INTO BIGGER ROLE AT SEATTLE

By Rhiannon PotkeyPublished Saturday, December 24, 2011

Courtesy of Seattle University Athletics

It became apparent to Kacie Sowell (Buena) during spring workouts she would have to take on a bigger role for theSeattle University women's basketball team.

As the 6-foot-2 sophomore forward went through drills with coaches, Sowell realized she was the only post player on thecourt.

Although Seattle would welcome a few transfers and freshmen in the fall, Sowell knew it would take time for them toadjust.

"I knew I had step up and kind of be the post player for the team," she said. "I was the only one returning this season, and the coaches have really encouraged me and pushed me to work hard and do everything I can to play well. It's beena change in my mentality."

It's been a change for the better.

Sowell is averaging a team-leading 13.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the Redhawks while shooting 62.1percent from the field.

Having a year of experience under her belt has provided Sowell with a measure of comfort on the court this season.

"Last year was definitely a year to adjust to a lot of things like being away from home and learning the college pace ofthe game, which is obviously a lot faster," she said. "There is a lot of adjusting that takes place with a new team and anew coaching staff and learning what they want and expect from me to play at this level. But I think I understand thisyear what it takes to be more successful."

Seattle is playing as an independent in Division I, but will join the Western Athletic Conference beginning in the 2012-2013 season.

"I think it's perfect timing for our team," Sowell said. "This year is kind of a big year for us. Last year we didn't have sucha great year, so this is the year for us to get better and build up this program a little more. Next year we want to be ableto go into the WAC and compete with those teams. I am excited. It's great way to spend my last two years."

Sowell was able to return to Ventura to celebrate Christmas with her family before heading back to Seattle for practice onTuesday morning.

"Being away and not being able to see my family is one thing that takes a lot of getting used to, so it's nice to be home,"Sowell said. "It's also nice to get a little rest and let my body recover and kind of regroup before going back to playingagain."

Seattle (6-6) will return to game action on Thursday against St. Francis (Pa.) in the Washington Dental Service HolidayHoops Tournamet at KeyArena.

Although the Redhawks are not eligible to participate in the NCAA Tournament this season, they have plenty of othergoals in mind.

"We want to go to the NIT and keep working hard to get better," Sowell said. "I feel like I am a part of a great team and agreat program and I want to just keep building it up and having fun along the way."
