Construction Update Photo

On Sunday, September 13th, the Second Avenue Subway Community Outreach Team, in conjunction with Judlau Contracting, and Schiavone Contracting, participated in the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Third Avenue Benefit Festival.

With the SAS project in its finishing stages, MTACC took a larger presence than normal (an entire city block) in order to generate excitement about completion of the project. To help generate this excitement, six-foot fence wrap panels were displayed depicting dynamic construction images, maps of the future Q service to the upper east side, time tables for stops on the new Q service, and photos of the tunnels that fair goers could take photos with, as well as insert their faces into, as if they were helping build the project.

A big draw was construction equipment that helped to build the subway which was provided by our construction contractor partners at Judlau and Schiavone. Also adding to the festive atmosphere was music provided by YAZ Band, one of MTA Arts and Design group’s Music Underground artists.

And of course, the Community Outreach team answered questions for, and entertained, more than 1,000 people, many of whom are now more knowledgeable about the Second Avenue Subway project and the benefits it will provide for residents of the Upper East Side, and beyond.

Residents enjoy the Third Avenue Community Benefits Festival

Street restoration complete on the north side of 63rd Street between Lexington and Park Avenue (in front of 123 and 125 E. 63rd Street).

*** The next SAS Public Workshop will be Wednesday, October 21st, at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at Temple Israel (112 East 75th Street). Please RSVP to (646) 448-8884 ext 100.

The new 63rd Street/Lexington Av Station is a renovation of the existing line station constructed in the 1970s. Work at this station will be to tie the Q line into the existing F line station. The remodled station will have four new entrances at the intersec-tion of 63rd Street and Third Avenue. Entrance 1 will provide two new street-level escalators, Entrances 3 and 4 will provide new staircases, and Entrance 2 will have a street-level ADA accessible elevator. The station will also have four new elevators from the

mezzanine to platform levels.

Work to reconstruct the existing 63rd Street/Lexing-ton Av Station involves excavation for the construction of new entrance and ancillary buildings, removal and upgrade of the structural elements within the existing subway tunnel, and a traction power connection to the 57th/7th Street Station on the Line. This work is expected to be completed by Spring of 2016.
