SECOND GRADE
Mrs. Kempf
February 18, 2020
Greetings from Mrs. Kempf,
Hope you had a wonderful three day weekend! It appears that we have finally chased away
the germs☺
I need to catch up a little with the February Dress down days. Last Friday, Valentine’s Day we
did a dress down for heart health awareness, this Friday, February 21st we will do a $1 dress
down for the Build a Bed Project, and then Friday, February 28th we will do the $1 dress down
for a special intention of Holy Family church, a family in need. As always you may send in
more than $1 or chose not to participate.
The Knights of Columbus yummy Fish Fry’s begin on Friday, February 28th. Dine in or take out
available.
We end the third quarter on Friday, March 6th. We dismiss at 1:00 as the teachers have
Professional Development with Father Andy that afternoon.
Our February raffle ticket winners are:
$25.00 Barb Ross $50.00 Keith Salisbury
$75.00 Richard Kouns $100.00 Kevin Dingess
*Our next drawing will be held on March 11th.
We are hard at work on our 5K run and Luck of the Irish party! Please get your tickets sold and
returned to the school office. More available in the office if you’d like to invite your friends!
This is by far our biggest fund raiser day of the year!! If you are unable to participate in the 5K
stop by that morning and see all the Wonderful Leprechauns, cheer on our racers, and
volunteers are always needed too.
Our Luck of the Irish evening has something for everyone! A Silent Auction with many items
made by our students, yummy hors d’oeuvres, the reverse raffle, socializing, and lastly to close
out the evening music and dancing with our own DJ Mings.
Save the Date: Our Beauty and the Beast production will be on Tuesday, March 31st.
Lastly our SCRIP incentive this month is fast food frenzy! The person who purchases the most
fast food SCRIP will receive a $25 gift card to their favorite restaurant.
Dear Parents,
I can’t believe that it is time for First Reconciliation already! March 2,
2020 at 6:30 p.m. is the date to remember. I am taking the children over
to the chapel during the next couple of weeks to practice. Please keep
practicing the Act of Contrition at home. Together we can make the
kids prepared and that will help to ease their nerves. Due to having a
short week, we will only have a spelling test on Friday. I will not give a
practice test on Thursday.
THE FOLLOWING IS OUR AGENDA FOR THE WEEK:
• Reading: “Dex: The Heart of a Hero” p. 167
• Spelling: There will be a test on Friday. A spelling list has been sent
home and is also available on the website.
• Math: Chapter 8 “Money and Time.”
• Social Studies: There will be a test over “Our Needs and Wants” on
Thursday. A study guide has been sent home and is also available
on the website.
• Science: We will begin a new unit, “Space and Weather.”
• Religion: Reconciliation and Ash Wednesday
Reverse raffle tickets are on sale now for the Saint Patrick’s Day event on
March 14. If you need more tickets, please contact the office during
school hours or there is always someone available in the narthex after all
of the Masses over the weekend. Tuesday, March 3 is a Spirit Day.
Students may wear a HFS spirit shirt with your choice of bottoms.
Wednesday, February 26 is Ash Wednesday. This is the beginning of the
season of Lent. Also, don’t forget about SCRIP! This is such an easy way
to earn money for our school. As always, if you have any questions or
concerns, please feel free to contact me. I hope you have a marvelous
week!
Thanks,
Ms. Collins

“Our Needs and Wants”
Study Guide
• You earn money at a job.
• A shelter is where you live. (apartment, house, condo, etc.)
• When computers were first invented, they were very large. One might take up an entire room.
• Sometimes we don’t have enough money to buy everything we want, so we have to choose what is most important to us.
• A want is something that you do not need to survive.
• Technology is the science of making things faster, easier, or better.
• A need is something people must have to survive.
• Scarce is not having enough of something.
• You can save money to use for later.
• Students need to be able to tell me about a time when they had to make a choice between two things that they wanted. They need to tell me how they made the decision.
