A notoriously honest and outspoken seminary professor once served as the pastor of a small church. He was asked by a visitor to the church to tell the relevant things his church was doing. He replied, “We’re teaching boys and girls and men and women about the love of Jesus.”

“But what are you doing that is relevant to the world?” the critic asked sarcastically.

“We’re teaching boys and girls and men and women about the love of Jesus,” the pastor repeated.

“But what are you doing that is really relevant?”

“Listen,” said the pastor, “if you don’t think teaching boys and girls and men and women about the love of Jesus is the most relevant thing we can be doing, then you ought to get out of here right now!”

We all want to feel that what we do with our time, effort and money is relevant. What could be more relevant than teaching children and adults that there is a way to live this life with a sense of opportunity to love others, responsibility for our actions and attitudes, and accountability before our God.

Educating our congregation to be a community of people who seek to follow Jesus is our greatest mission and challenge. Toward that goal, I ask you to consider doing four things:

1. If you have not already done so, become involved in one of our Sunday School classes (both you and your children if you are a parent).

2. Pray for regularly and encourage personally our staff, elders, teachers and advisors working with our children’s, youth and adult education ministries especially:

a. our new Director of Children’s Ministry Jen Brown, who is off to a great start, and Elder Cathy Rogers; b. Rev. David Holden as he assumes leadership with the adult education ministry and Elder Joanne Olson-Biglieri; c. Rev Sara Benedetti in her leadership with our high school and middle school youth with Elders Mike Garrett and Rachael Gilbert (FYI Sara had 27 youth at a typical Sunday evening youth group meeting.) and

d. Sara’s work with the Youth Adults Ministry along with Elder Martha Renfroe (This group starts a new once-a- month class on Sunday mornings.) 3. Begin to do some personal reading and study to help you learn more about living the Christian life in today’s world. Use our church library as a resource. 4. 2016 CROP HUNGER WALK

JUSTICE MINISTRY NEWS

Below is an update from Boniface Juma, who Second Church supported by our Mission giving. He graduated after 2 years of study with a Master of Arts in Christian Leadership from the African Bible College, Lilongwe Campus. Below is a recent e-mail received from him:

I would like to let you know that am still working with William Murray Secondary school Nkhoma CCAP Educational Department. But I have a testimony to tell that I have been given two subjects to teach at Nkhoma University as a part time Lecturer. I am teaching Freshmen in History of World Religion but also Bioethics. My prayer is that they should take me full time not part time as it is now. I thank Second Church for helping me and praying for me.

I will never forget what Second Church has done for me and my family, may the good Lord bless the congregation until we meet again.

Proceeds for this event go to Buckhorn Children and Family Services. Buckhorn Children and Family Services provides a safe, healthy environment for some of Kentucky’s most severe cases of abuse and neglect. At Buckhorn, a faith-based agency that began more than 100 years ago, children find the much-needed guidance, care, security and structure that helps them begin healing and transforming their lives.

We are currently accepting donations for the silent auction. Please contact Carol Behr (268-6086 or [email protected]) if you have something you are interested in donating. Examples of donations from past years include: UK tickets, vacation condo, art work, wine, crafted furniture, jewelry, N..you get the idea and it is all for the children!

Special thanks to Second Church for your faithfulness and continued support for this mission. Be looking for sign-ups in the Gathering Place in mid-October.

ATTENTION LADIES! The Lord loves righteousness and justice;

the earth if full of his unfailing love. Psalm 33:5

Second’s Justice Ministry Team will share the community concerns voiced at our recent- and ongoing- Listening Process House Meetings at BUILD's (Building a United Interfaith Lex. through Direct Action) Team Assembly on October 3. At this time the two problems, and current issues, most frequently verbalized by 2nd members are: our Senate leadership continues to suppress ALL attempts to end payday lending abuse in KY and the increase in shootings, murders, open buying and selling of drugs that continue to make ALL our neighborhoods unsafe.

At the Community Problems Assembly on October 17 held at Shiloh Baptist, we will hear Ms. Shannon Sell, Bluegrass Hub Administrator for Fay. CO give her report on the current mental health care initiative. She will also share results of the recent mental health needs assessment survey. Police Chief Barnard is expected to attend and report on his Nehemiah Action commitment "for a research meeting with his officers in the police dept. to learn more about the chief's plan for 'My Brother's Keeper'. An update on the payday lending issue will also be presented.

All of Second’s Justice Ministry Network Members will caucus on these issues and any other 'new' problem before the roll call and vote. Your presence and participation is imperative as we continue our work toward a vision of what God intends our city to be; a city of God. Kingdom on earth never occurs by avoiding the problem.

A very warm, sunny afternoon welcomed the most diverse community ever represented at the CROP Hunger Walk Sunday. Approximately 280 Walkers from 22 churches and 3

organizations walked in solidarity to help end hunger. We were delighted to welcome participants from Temple Adath Israel and Masjid Bilal. It was a very good day!

Abundant gratitude to the many Second Church volunteers that assisted with registration, served as crossing guards, managed the T-shirt sales table, collected funds, drove the church van and assisted with setting-up and taking down tables and chairs. Many THANKS! to Second's church family for your generous donations which support the anti-hunger programs of our partners, Church World Service and God's Pantry Food Bank. As we continue our fund raising through Oct., one can still 'Spirit Walk' (crophungerwalk.org/lexingtonky or checks payable to CWS/CROP Hunger Walk and may be placed in Sunday's offering. . . more information next month.

Thank You! Judy Maxson

Get Your Flu Shot Sunday, October 16

Christian Care Communities will be at church from 9:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m., to offer flu shots. Stay for

lunch and get immunized! This is an easy way to stay healthier this winter! The immunization is available to anyone over the age of 18. If you have Medicare or Medicare replacement insurance, bring your card and they will file for you. If you don't have insurance coverage, the cost is $25.00, payable by cash or check.

For wisdom will enter your heart and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Proverbs 2:10

From the National Institute on Aging: Until recently, preventing disease received little attention. Things are changing! We now know that it's never too late to stop smoking, improve your diet, or start exercising. Even people with chronic diseases, like diabetes, can prevent further disability and perhaps control the progress of the disease. During your next medical appointment consider asking the following questions:

• Is there any way to prevent a condition the runs in my family?

• Are there ways to keep my condition from getting worse?

• How will changing my habits help me?

• Are there support groups or community services to help me?

Keep the conversation going with your provider. Discuss choices, risks and benefits until you come to agreement on a plan that works for you. You benefit the most from a treatment plan when you understand what is happening and are involved in making decisions. Jackie Graves, Parish Nurse

LIBRARY NEWS

Did you know....the Emergency Shelter at the Hope Center provides over 6,000 nights of shelter each month to men NOT in one of their many programs. That means that a shower with a clean towel and personal toiletries is also provided to each one of the men. If you find yourself changing out towels when freshening up your bathrooms at home or cleaning out a loved one's home, the Hope Center is always in need of towels (new or used but in good condition) and washcloths as well as personal toiletries. These can be placed in the box marked "Hope Center" in the Mission closet located in the Gathering Place.

As the temperatures turn colder, many of us will take the warmth of our homes for granted. The streets of Lexington are filled with those who don’t have that luxuryNthose who can’t get to a shelter or who won’t go to a shelter for one reason or another. With your assistance, Blankets of Hope can give hope and warmth to those who need it. Blankets, new and old, (but clean) are needed! If you have extra blankets, coats, gloves or hats, please consider donating them to Blankets of Hope. In the Mission Closet in the Gathering Room, there is a marked bin for any donations. Thank you!
